ALFRED E. BARTLETT, .OF OGDENSBURG, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO RICHARD SPRY AND ONE-THIRD TO ALDERIC M. CORMIER, BOTH OF OGDENS- BURG, NEW YORK.
GUARD FOR IAPIBR'TIITDINGv MACHINES.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED E. BAR'rLn'r'r, a citizen of Great Britain, residing at Ogdensburg, in the county of St. Lawrence and State lof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guards for Paper-Winding Machines, .of which thev following is a specification.
This invention relates to an .improvement in guards lfor paper winding machines and more particularly to paper winding ma* chines of the type known as, double drum Winder, wherein a reel of paper is mountedY on a shaft carried byjournal boxes which are capable of vertical movement as the reel 'increases in size.
The object of the invention is to provide an automatic guard for the reelr of paper being wound which, as the size of the reel increases, will maintain a given clearance between it and the reel of paper, thereby insuring ample protection to the operator.
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. l is a side elevation of the paper machine with the attachmentl applied;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse sectional view through the uard; c
Figf is a detailed front view of one of the feed rollers showing the stationary guard andthe movable guard .partly broken away;
Fig. 4is a longitudinal section taken on the line, 44,of ig. 1.
The numeral., 1, indicates the face of theY machine and projecting upwardly' therefrom, are the standards, 2, constituting the frame work ofthe machine andsupporting the journal bearings of the several machine shafts. The numerals, 3 and 4, indicate the winding drums.
The numeral, 5, designates suitable guideways secured to the vertical faces of the standards, 2, and slidably received upon these ways are the journal boxes, 6, adapted to support a shaft, 7 ,upon which the reel of paper, 8, is to be wound. The numeral,
9, indicates a stationary guard plate which surrounds the feed roll, 4. Secured tothe ends of the guard plate, 9, are the semicircular guide plates, 10-10, each having an inwardly pro'ecting ange, 11. At the endsv andinterme iate of the stationary guard plates, 9, are arranged setsof `ro11ers,f12,
l upon the shaft, T.
rotatably journaled in suitable angle plates, 13-13. VReceivedupon these rollers, 12, is a movable semiecircular guard plate, 14.
As a. means for actuating this movable guard plate, lll, as the reel of paper increases in diameter, I preferably provide the following mechanism.
The numeral, l5, indicates a vertically arranged arm secured to the journal box, 6, the lower end of said arm passing through suitable openings in the face to insure a true vertical movement.
Secured to this arm, i5, is a cam, 1G. Pivoted as at 17, is a lever, 1S, and rotatably secured to one end of this lever is a roller, lf), adapted to engage the cam, le. rlhe opposite end of said lever is connected by a link, 20, to the movable guard, i4, which owing to the contour of the cam is caused to recede as the cam, 16, moves 'upwardly due to the increasing diameter of the reel of paper being wound A counter' weight, 2l, adjustably secured to the lever acts to return the movable guard as the cam, 16, moves in a downward direction.
In constructing1 a guard as hereinbefore described and illustrated, I have produced a device which is simple in construction and effective in functioning to safeguard against accident to the operator.
It is obvious. that more or less slight changes `might be made without departing from the general scope of my invention, therefore I do not wish to be limited to the exact structure disclosed.
I claim:
