CRANK LOCK FORLBOX CARS.

To all whom it may 00mm.-
Be it known that we, AnoLrH E. ASHLE- MAN and THOMAS E. HANEY, citizens of the United States, residing at \Vaco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Crank Lock for Box Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to a combined closure operator and lock, the primary object of the invention being to provide a device of this character especially designed for use in connection with sliding closures, of rolling stock the operating device being such as to lock the closure in its open or closed position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for moving the closure-to its open or closed position, with the minimum amount of exertion on the part of the operator.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a sliding closure supplied with an operating device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates the body portion of a box car which is of the usual construction and provided with the usual door openings.
Secured along the upper edge of each door opening is a flanged member 6 pro vided with a depending flange 7 forming a guide for the rollers 8 carried at the upper edge of the closure 9.
Extending along the lower edge of each door opening, is a track 10 on which the rollers 1.1 operate, the rollers 11 being supported between the plate 12 and closure 9 as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the draw- Fositioned under the trackway 10 is a rack bar 13 that is engaged by the pinion Serial No. 46,057.

An operating handle indicated at 16 is provided with a shaft 17 that extends through the pinion 141 and has connection therewith in such a way that movement of the operating handle will produce a relative movement of the pinion to move the closure along the track 10.
The bracket 15 extends upwardly terminating at an appreciable distance above the lower edge of the closure 9 where the same is bolted to the closure as at 18. EX- tending laterally from the upper portion of the bracket 15 is a keeper 19 provided with an opening 20 through which a suitable seal or lock may be passed, for locking the closure after it has been moved to the desired position.
Pivotally connected with the operating handle 16 is a locking member 21 provided with an opening to accommodate the keeper 19 to the end that when the locking member 21 is positioned as shown by Figure 2, and a suitable lock is placed through the opening in the keeper, movement of the operating handle as well as the pinion connected therewith, will be prevented, there by locking the closure against movement.
In the operation of the device, the locking member 21 is moved from a position as shown in Figure 2, to a position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2 and the handle 16 operated to rotate the pinion 141. It will thus be seenthat the rotation of the pinion will cause the sliding closure 9 to move longitudinally of the track 10, to the desired position, whereupon the locking member 21 is moved to its active position, thereby eliminating any possibility of moving the door. 7
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to this construction, the closure may be locked either in its closed or semiclosed positions, and thereby adapt the closure and car equipped with the device, for various usages.

A sliding door for cars including a body portion, a plate secured to the lower end of the door and having a downwardly extended portion, the main portion of the plate being disposed in spaced relation with the lower end of the body portion, rollers positioned between-the door and plate, a track secured to the car and having a depending flange formed along one edge thereof, a rack bar secured on the inner surface of the track, a bracket member secured to the door and overlying the plate, said bracket member having an inwardly and upwardly extended portion, a pinion supported by the bracket member and adapted to mesh with the rack bar to operate the door a shaft on which the pinion is mounted, an operating handle secured to 10 the shaft for rotating the pinion, and means for locking the operating handle against movement,
