N. W. ORDWAY TOOL MAKERS GAUGE Filed Nov. 28, 1924 Patented Mar. Z, i926.
UNITED STAT NEHEMIAH W. ORDWAY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
V'I'OOllllltf..AKEIBIS GAUGE.
Application filed November 28, 1924. Serial No. 752,616.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, NEHEMIAH YV. ORD- wAY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I'Iartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Toolmakers Gauge, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to theclass of instruments commonly employed by tool makers and other mechanics for measuring and gauging purposes, and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a tool of this class that may be used forv various purposes, that shall be simple in construction, and that shall be particularly effective in securing the results desired.
One form of device embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of my improved tool showing its use in determining the proper angles for the cutting end of a drill.
Figure 2 is an edge view of the same.
Figure 3 is an edge view of the stock.
Figure 4 is an end view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a view of a fragment of the stock showing its use with a scaled blade.
Figure 6 is an edge view of the structure shown in Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail View of one of the blades illustrated in Figure 4.
Figure 8 is a detail view of the other blade illustrated in the structure of Figure 4.
My invention comprises a stock that is formed to receive various instruments in connection with which gauges and measuring devices of various sorts may be employed for different purposes, thus enabling the tool to be put to a wide variety of uses.
In the accompanying drawings the Vnu meral 10 denotes the stock as a whole comprising a web llpbounded by a side face 12 and an end face 18, said faces being located at right angles `each to the other and being of considerable width to enable the stock alone to be used as a square or in connection with blades to be hereinafter described to provide a square of increased dimensions.
A slot 14 is formed in the end of the stock extending in the direction of width of such stock and this slot adapted to receive varieus instruments to be employed for different purposes. A narrow recess 15 opens out from the slot 14 and along and through the facev 12, as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, the back of this recess being tapered from the face 12 to the point where it meets the slot 14.
The construction of the stock thus far described is especially adapted for use with taper determining blades 16S-17, each of which comprises a shank 18 or 19 terminating in a pointed tapered head 20 or 21. The tapers of the edges 22 and 28 extend in different directions so that surfaces terminating in a point may be gauged. In the illustration shown herein the blades are arranged to gauge the cutting end of a drill, the two blades being so disposed that their meeting edges form a notch 24 by 'means of which it may be readily determined whether the two sides of the drill end are formed at the same angle and also whether the point is in the center. By moving the blade 17 into the stock and the blade 16 farther out of the stock, either or both, it will be noted that a tapered surface com prising a recess or notch may be gauged.
In this form of the structure the shanks 18 and 19 rest against each other in the slot 14, said slot being preferably of a width substantially twice that of the narrow recess 15.
In the form of the device illustrated in Figures 5 and 6 a blade 25 is employed that is preferably the' dimensions of the slot 14 and such blade may be provided with scales 26 by means of which different measurements may be obtained, the device thus assembled satisfactorily answering for one of its purposes as a depth gauge.
The shank 18 of the blade 16 may be provided with a lug 27 projecting outwardly l to engage the edge of the stock at the side of the slot 14, and thus hold the blade 16 against endwise movement if desired.
It will be noted that the beveled or ta pered edges 22-23 are so arranged that' drills of various sizes and of a considerable width may be readily and accurately gauged.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the device which I now consider vto represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have itunderstood that the device Shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and :applied to y uses,` other' than'those above set out.
I claimz- 1 l. A stock having afstraight edge with aslot extending thereinto with its lengthwise dimension at right angles to such edge, and two blades fitting said.slot. and extending lengthwise therein and having Cooperating tapered;v edges.
slotwith their flat faces restilflgffl against each other and the-edge of eaehf-ofsaid blades. being provided with a taperediportion coopi erating with the .tapered portiony vof Ithe other blade.
4. A vstoek-hzm/ingl a straight edgewith a slot .extendingvthereinto. at; right angles; kto
said eglge, zfsaidslot having a beveled portion, and a bladefitting said slot and having a beveled portion fitting the beveled portion ofsaidY-slotfto-loeatean'edge of said blade at right angles to said straight edge of the stock.
v5. Astookhaving a straight edge with a `slot extending thereinto at right angles to said edge, said slotv having-a beveled back portion forming a recess narrower than said slot, and a'bladefitting said slot and ha'if'ing -a beveled portionfitting the beveled portion of said .slot to loeatean `edge of .said blade .at right vangles to said straight edge of the stock.
6.` A stoekfhaving a straight edge with a slot yextending thereinto Withits lengthwise `dimension at right angles to said edge, and
two iatblades'tting saidslot and extending: lengthwise thereintowith theirflat faces resting against each other and the edges ot Y`said blades'being with cooperatingoppostelytapered porprovided near 'their ends tions.
,NEHEMIAH W. ORD'WAY.
