TERMINAL POST.
Application iled August 3, 1925. Serial No. 47,995.
T o all 1li/0m t may concern.'
Be it knownthat I, EDWARD L. AIKEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex, State y of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Terminal Post, of which the following is a descrip.
tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the iguresof reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a terminal post for use in connection with electrical apparatus and vit is the principal object of my invention to provide a terminal postto which electrical connections may be quickly made.
Another object of my invention isto provide a terminal post which will take either a stra-ight wire, terminal, or the ordinary spade clip commonly used in electrical circuits such as are found in telephone andradio work.
Another object of my invention is to provide a terminal which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, yet one that will provide a good electrical contact and hence be elicient in'operation.
My invention will be best understood b yreference to the drawing in which- Figure 1 is an assembled view v01:1 an enf. larged scale of the terminal post attached to a mounting plate and showing a spade clip` held by the terminal.
. Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of lFig. l'with the plunger depressed.
Figure 3 is a view of the of the terminal post.
In the drawing l is a thimble having slots 2 and 3 substantially diametrically op osite. Mounted within the thimble 1 is a pus button or plunger 4 having an end-protruding through the other part of the vthimble. The plunger-4 has a pair of annular flanges 5 and 6 spaced apart so as to provide an annular groove 7. The plunger 4 is normally held by the spring 8 so the flange 5 is against the spun over portion 9, atthe upper end of the thimble 1. When in this position the flange 6 closes the slots or grooves 2 and 3 thereby keeping dust and dirt out of the thimble. Y
As shown in Fig. 1 the plunger 4 has been depressed a certain amount so that a spade clip 10 can be inserted through the slots 2 and 3, straddling the portions 11 of the thimble and the spade clip 10 is gripped bepush button part tween the flange 6 and the wall of the thimble 1. It will be observed that spade clips of varying thickness may be yinserted across the slots 2 and 3. It will also be observed that a straight terminal or a conducting wire itself maybe passed straight through the slots 2 and 3 and the annular groove 7, on, either or both sides of the stem portion 12, or, the wire may be attached to the terminal post by laying it edgewise in either one of the slots 2 or 3, the same `as one side of thespade clip. It will also be` seen that both the spade clip and a straight terminal or wire may be simultaneously used. The thimble 1 is preferably provided `with an integral stem 13 which is threaded for the purpose of attaching same to the mounting plate as by means'of nuts 15.
Having thus described my' invention what I claim is:
1. A terminal post comprising; a thimble having means for mounting, said thimble vhaving a pairk of substantially opposite horizontal slots -cutting through the wall Yof the thimble, a plunger held within the thimble but having anl end protruding therefrom, said plunger having a pair of flanges disposed to form an annular .groove therebetween ofgsubstantially the width of the thimble slot and a spring within the thimble cooperatingwith the thimbletoV normally hold the plunger so the lower flange 'thereon closes the slots in the thimble.
2. A terminal Apost comprising; a thimble' having means for mounting, said thimble having a pair of substantially op osito horizontal slots-cutting through the wall of the t imble, a plunger held within the thimble ut having an end protruding therefrom, said plunger having a pair of parallel flanges spaced from each other a distance sufficient to take the ordinary spade clip y,or wires of varyin diameters within a given range .and which may be passed through the slots in the thimble and a s ring within the thimble acting against tlle inner end of the plunger.
3. A terminal post comprising; a thimble havingv means for mounting, said thimble usf having a pair of substantially opposite horizontal slots cutting through the wall ofthe thimble to a distance such that the space between the slots is such as to allow a standard spade clip to bridge the thimble, a plunger held within the thimble but having an end protruding therefrom,V said plunger having at least one flange adapted to normally close the slots but to grip the spade clip after the plunger has been moved so the s ade cli can e inserted in the slots an a spri g within the thimble acting on the plunger for the purpose described.
4. A terminal post comprising; 'a thimble having means for mounting, said thimble v having a pair ofsubstantially opposite horizontal slots cutting through the wall of the thimble, a plunger held within the thimble but having an end protruding therefrom, vsaid plunger having a pair of s aced flanges arranged so that when the p unger is depressed the space between the flanges may be brought into alignment with said slots whereby a straight conductor may be passed all the way through the thimble between the flanges or a spade clip may be passed across the slots between the flanges and a spring within'the'thimble to react on the lunger to cause either the conductorl or c 1p to be gripped between one of said flanges and the thimble.
5. A terminal post comprising; a thimble having means for mounting, said thimble having a I air of substantially opposite horizontal s ots cutting through the wall of the thimble, a plunger held within the thimble but having an end protruding:
therefrom, said plunger having' a pair of parallel horizontal anges, the lower of, which normally closes said slots in the thimble, the distance betweerl the flanges being substantially the width of' the slots so that when the plunger is depressed a spade 6. A terminal post comprising; a thimble having means for .mount1ng, said thimble having a pair of oppositely disposed parallel arcuate slots in the wall thereof, a plunger held within the thimble but having an end protruding therefrom, said plunger having Aa pair of flanges disposed to form an annular groove substantially parallel to said slots and preferably at least as wide as the slots and a s ring within the thimble and cooperating therewith to normally react on the plun er.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
