UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MEYER AND CONRAD MEYER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
' IMPROVEMENT IN CHlMNEY-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I57,45S, dated December 8, 1874; application filed November 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK MEYER and CONRAD MEYER, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State ot' Ohio, have invented an Improved Chimney-Top, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements iu chimney-tops; and consists of a spiral fan placed in the top of the pipe, having wings extending over the sides and un der a hood which surrounds the top of said pipe, so constructed and arranged that the action of the wind on the said wings and spiral which extends above the pipe causes the said spiral fan to revolve, whereby the draft in said pipe top is greatly increased, thereby improving the draft of the chimney, and insuring a draft in otherwise faulty chimneys.
To enable others to fully understand our invention, we will proceed to describe the same in detail with the 'aid of the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is an exterior elevation. a vertical section.
A, Figs. l and 2, is a cylinder or pipe, which is to be attached to the top of a chimney. B is a aring hood, open at the top and surrounding the said pipe, being attached to the outside of the pipe by arms b b. C is a spiral fan,
Eig. 21s
placed on a central rod, D, supported in crossbars d d placed in the pipe, the lower one forming the step for the rod to turn in. The said fan is located in the top of the pipe, and extends upward and through the top of the hood B. On the sides of the fan are placed curved wings E E, which reach out over the top edge of the pipe A, and within the hood B.
The operation of this is as follows z The wind or currents of air which pass up inside the hood causes the fan to revolve, the action ofvwhich creates a draft in the pipe, and thus enhances the draft of the chimney. The wind from above the hood also, instead of blowing down, or causing the fan to revolve backward, will help to revolve the fau in the right direction.
Having described our invention, we claim- The pipe A, the hood B, the spiral fan C, having the projecting wings E E, and the central rod D, each and all being constructed, combined, and operated substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
