Be it known that I, HERMAN C. lVALD- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, ll iissouri, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Fire Stops for Elevator Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to counterbalanced lire doors for elevator shafts, and particularly horiZontallydivided fire doors of the type in which the top and bottom sections of the door are arranged in paral el relation to each other, but in different vertical planes, so as to provide a space between the top section of the door and the lintel of the door opening that willreceive the bottom section of a vertically-aligned door of the Same type located on the floor above, when said upper door is moved into its open position, such doors being used principally in buildings in which the distance between the lintcl ot a door opening and'the floor above is not deep enough to receive two door sections that lie in the same vertical plane, one above the other,
Owing to the fact that the top section of such a door is spaced away from the lintcl off the door opening when the door is in its closed position, there is danger of fire escaping from the elevator shaft into the room I or from the room into the elevator shaft through the space between said llntel and top door section.
The main object of mypr'esent invention is to provide an efficient means of novel construction for closing the space between the lintcl of the door opening and the top section of the door that will not interfere with the downward movement of the bottom section of the vertically-aligned door located at the floor above.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View, illustrating a fire door structure embodying my invention, in which the means for closing the space between the top section of the door and the lintcl of the door opening con sists of a hinged or pivotally mounted fire stop carried by said lintel; and
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the parts shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of my invention. A designates the top section of a counterbalanced lire door and B designatesthe lintel of the opening which said door closes, the top section A of the door being spaced away from the lintel B, so as to provide a space for receiving the bottom section of the vertically-aligned door located at the floor above when said bottom section is moved downwardly intov its open position.
In order to prevent fire from escaping through the space between the top section it of the door and the lintcl B afire stop C is provided for normally closing said space,

While said fire stop elfectively closes the space between the top sec tion of the door and the lintel of the door opening; it does not interfere with the up"- ward movement of the top section of the door or the downward movementof the bottom section of the vertically-aligned door located at the fioor above, owing to the fact that said stop is mounted in such a way that it will swing downwardly into an in operative position, as shown'in broken lines in Figurel, when it is engaged by the bottom section of the door above during the operation of opening the latter.
