Description
Patent ed Feb. 16,
UNITED STATES,
WILLIAM HENRY GOWDIIRIDGE, or 'ROSSITER, PENNSYLVANIA. I
- PATENT OFFIC AU'GER BI'I'.
Application filed December and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Auger Bits, of which the following is a specifica tion. 7
This invention relates to auger bits, and
more particularly to an anger bit specially adapted for use in coal mining and similar operations. I 5
'One ofthe main objects of the invention is to provide an auger bitof simple construction and operation which can be quickly and easily resharpened thuseffect ing a material saving in time. A further object is to provide abit having means serving as guide means for resharpening the bit so as to obtain accuracy in sharpening thereof. Further objects will appear from the detail description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the auger. as used;
Figure 2 is an enlarged side View, partly broken away; I I
Figure 3 is a plan of the tip before twisting of the same;"
Figure 4 1s a section taken substantially 'auger as being used for boring coal it can also beused for boring rock and 'other materials. As the tip can be readily applied on line ll of Fig. 3.
The auger A is of well known construction and includes a bit or pod a from which extends a shank Z) provided with a crank 0 and a pressureapplyingmember d.-
In the present type of auger commonly used, when the points or prongs of the bit or podl (4 become dull, or ifthe prongs break, it is necessary to carry the auger to the blacksmith shop to have it resharpened or repaired- Thiscmeans a considerable loss of time to the miner with a consequent loss in production. To avoidthis objection I provide a terminal or tip member 1 to the outer end'of which is secured a screw-stud 2 which threads into a corresponding socket '3 provided in the end of pod a remote from shank Z). Memberl is initially formed as a 'flat blank provided withslots 19,1 and 1, thelatter slot extending from the prong or 3, 1923. Serial No. 678,306.
working end of the blank. This provides, 7
in effect, two parallel plates or strips 4 corn nected by webs 5, the outer ends of these strips being integrally connected together. This member is'then twisted into substantially spiral form so as to produce a tip member which can bereadily attached to the pod a. When member 1 is twisted the slots 1, 1 and 1 provide openings through which slivers of coal removed the prongs 4 can readily pass so' aslto prevent clogging or. jamming of the tip member, the slack being fed out of the hole bored by the pod.
In the event that the prongs 4* become dull or are broken the tip may be readily removed or'detachedfrom pod a and replaced by anew tip. F or this purpose the miner may carry several tips in his pocket.
memberl and providing means forescapement therethrough of slivers-of coal, the
In addition to facilitating twistingfof the slots ,1, 1 and 1 serve. as guides in filing or sharpening the prongs 4 Preferably, though not necessarily, I provideaset screw 6 which is threaded into the thickened por-l tion' of pod-a in which the socket 3 is provided, this set screw being adapted for enas to lock the gagement with shank 2 so pod and the tip together.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described my and replaced it'will be apparent that my invent on effects a material saving in time which is an important consideration in minanger tipmember adapted for securement to ,the'bit portion of an auger and provided "with central openings "disposed coaxially withsaid member. i v
