To all whom it may concern.- Be it known that I, GEORGE E. CRAW- roao, a citizen of the United States, resid- Francisco and State of California, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in 'Ash Receivers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention aims to provide a unique form of smokers ash receiver, which is rovided with novel means for extinguishing cigarette buts and discharging them into a receptacle.

scription being supplemented by the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings above briefly described,

the numeral .1 designates a hollow base or receptacle which may be of any desired shape and is preferably provided at one end with a safety match box holder 2. Resting removably upon the base 1, I have shown an ash tray 3 whose bottom is formed with a longitudinal slot 4 over the bottom of the base 1, said bottom of the ash tray preferably declining to the slot as shown. The edges of the tray may well be provided with appropriate rests 5 for cigars or cigarettes.

Disposed longitudinally in the slot 4, is a horizontally elongated cigarette butt support 6 whose ends are provided with trunnions or the like 7 supported'by the end walls of the tray 3, said supporting member 6 having a pluralit of circumferentiallly spaced longitudinal anges 8, two of whic are always directed upwardly to receive therebetween a cigarette butt B, as shown again restored to vertical position.

A normally vertical lever 9 is mounted at one end of the member 6 and is depression of the lever 9 from the position of Fig. 4, an inwardly directed finger 11 on the free end of the arm 10, snaps past one of the lowermost flanges 8 of the member 6, and when the lever 9 is righted, said finger moves this flange upwardly, thus rotating the entire support 6 to discharge the extinguished cigarette butt.

In the construction shown, the .arm 10 is integral with a horizontal transverse rock shaft 12 to which the lever 9 is secured, said shaft being rockably mounted in appropriate bearings 13 secured to one end of the tray 3. A suitable spring 14 is provided to normally swing the lever 9 to an upright position, and this spring may well surround the shaft 12.

Ashes discharged into the tray 3, may gravitate a-n'd descend through the slot 4 into the receptacle 1, and whenever a burning butt of a cigarette is to be placed into the device, it is first laid upon the support 6, whereupon the lever 9 is swung downwardly as shown in Fig. 5, thus crushing the butt and extinguishing the fire. Then,

when this lever is righted, the support 6 is turned to another position, so as to discharge the extinguished butt into the base or receptacle 1, at the same time presenting another surface of said support for future use.

Excellent results are obtainable from the general arrangement shown and described and it is therefore preferably followed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may be made.

-1. An ash receiver and butt extinguisher comprising a tray having an openingl in its bottom, a hollow base with which sai opening communicates, a cigarette butt support rotatably mounted in said opening, 2. normally raised butt-pressing member movably mounted adjacent said butt support and.

adapted to be moved downwardle to force a butt against said support tethereby ex- -tin uish the butt, and means for rotating sai support when the pressing member is again raised, thereby depositing the extinguished butt in the hollow base.

2. An ash receiver and butt extinguisher comprising a tray having an elongated slot in its bottom, a hollow base with which said slot communicates, a horizontally elongated cigarette butt support rotatably mounted in said slot ona longitudinal axis, said support havin longitudinally circumferentially space butt-retaining flanges, a butt-pressing lever normally standin substantially upright at one end of sai support and fulcrumed to the tray on an axis transverse to said support, said lever being adapted to be forced downwardly against a cigarette butt on said support to thereby extinguish the butt, and a spring-pressed arm secured to the aforesaid lever and cooperable with the flanges of said butt support to rotate the latter when the lever is raised, whereby the extin uished butt is discharged into the hollow ase.

A cigarette butt extinguisher and receiver comprising a receptacle, a cigarette butt support rotatably mounted over the bottom of said receptacle, a normally raised butt-pressing mem er movably' mounted adjacent said support and adapted to be moved downwardly to force a butt against said support to thereby extinguish the butt, and means for rotating the support when the pressing member is again raised, thereby depositing the extinguished butt in the receptacle.

4. A cigarette butt extinguisher and receiver comprising a receptacle, a butt support rotatably mounted on a horizontal axis over the bottom of said receptacle, said support havin circumferentially spaced buttretaining anges, a butt-pressing lever fulcrumed adjacent said support and normally standing substantially upright, said lever being adapted to be swung downwardly to force a butt against the support, thereby extinguishing the butt, and a spring-pressed arm secured to the aforesaid lever and co operable with the flanges of the support to rotate the latter each time'the lever is raised.
