REEL FOR DOUBLE-HOSE LINES "App licati'qn filed June 17,: 1925; Serial No. 31314.
T 0 at? am it may concern I Be it that I, HOWARD EDWIN Bin)- 'nently-conne'cted toitwo separate liquid supphes: "Th reis often a need for 'ai-ee'l which noun, a British subject, and resident of 9 Grosvenor Gardens, London, SW. it, ngland; have invented certain new and" useful Improvements" in Reelsfor Double Hose Iii-lies (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain No. 18412/24, dated 1st "August, 19%), 0t which the" following is a specification. I
Thisiinvention relates to hose reels and its objecfiist'o provide a convenient construction' of reel' adaptedto carry two separate hose linesf lfi t0 provide inlet connections enabling the" twohose lines to be perinawill allow two different solutions to supas to enable them may be mentioned that fire extinguishing apparatu'sare in general use wherein it is necessary to conduct an acidsolution and an alkaline solution separately through hose lines and" to-allo'w them to min only when they arrive near the pOlI'Tt of ejection through a nozzle: to form a fire extinguishingrfoam; Although the inventionris particula rly applicable to'su'ch apparatus it is not,
or courselimited to such. k
According to the present invention, the
hearing fen ahosereel at one side is constructed so. that the' one liquid passes throughthe healing and the journal is constrructed'with'two independent passages into with which" the two liquids flow and within the sidepPate ofthe reel the two passages are permanently con-I 'eeted to the two: hose lines. The journal with its passages is preferably made a single casting secured to theside pl ateotthereel one: of the passages being co-axial with the ournal and having a connection with the suppiy" pipe for the one liquidalsorunning co-axially withthe journayl'. The otl'iie-r supply pipe comes in substantially radially throng the hearing n whiehthe journal turns; The liquid it enters byway of ports into an'outer passage in the'journal concentric with the passage and the journal casting is Figure 2 is a side elevation from'the right of' Figure I, the centralportion being shown in sectionon the line II-II in Figure I;
Figure 3' is a central vertical section to an enlarged scale through the'journal' formed with the inlet passages showing the connections tor the two liquid supplies;
Figure 4 is a vertical section on the line IV -IV in Figure 3; while Figure am apl-an with one half in horizontal section on the line V--V in Fimire 3.
The two" solutions" for producing the fire extinguishing foam are supplied through two fined" pipes a and b. The two solutions pass from these pipes through the journal at the rigl'rt-hanjd side of the reel, as viewed in Figure 1. The journal comprises a casting a, wl'ii cl'r issolnewli at annular in shape and iscansed'to protrude outwardly through a central holein the side; plate (Z of the reeL being-placed in position from the inside and then secured by means of four set screws 6 passing through the side plate (2 into the casting c. The right-handend of the'casting c, as seen most clearly in Figure 3, forms the journal proper of the reel and is cast with two concentric passages both co-axial with the journal itself. The central passage f is intended to convey one solution and an outer passage 9 is intended to accommodate the second solution. A pipe h is screwed concentrically into the end of the journal and is connected to the supply pipe 6 by an elbow 7c and a union Z which embodies some form or" water-tight joint, allowing the pipe ing member m within which the journal is free to turn. In order to prevent leakage of the solution between the bearing an and the the ejection nozzle.
I claim as new and desire journal 0, a pair of flanged plates a and o fit upon the journal 0 on either side of the bearing m, and between them and the hearing m there are respectively packing rings 39, g which may be impregnated with graph-,
its and grease. The plates at, 0 are flanged and can be drawn together by diametrically opposite bolts 7, s so that the whole. arrange- -ment practically constitutes a double stutiing box preventing leakage. The connection between the pipe c and the outer concentric passage 9 is by way of ports t in the outer wall of the journal 0.
As can be seen clearly in Figure 3, the two passages f and 9 within the side plate d turn radially outwards in opposite directions and within the open mouths of the passages f and 9 there are screwed respectively a pair of elbow pipes u and the two-hose lines o, w are jointed to the elbow pipes u by means of unions as, y of ordinary construction.
The journal or spindle 2 at the opposite end of the hose reel is merely a'plain spindle. The remote ends of the hose lines o, w are brought together in a junction near the discharge nozzle for the foam. Thus if one solution is a solution of sodium bicarbonate containing a foam producing agent, such as licorice or logwood extract, and the other solution is aluminium sulphate, the solutions flow continually to the hose lines quite separately, irrespective of the length of hose line which is being uncoiled and. it is possible in this way to keep them apart and to prevent the formation of foam resulting from their interaction until they arrive near Thus the necessity of driving the foam through a long pipe line, which not only affects detrimentally the quality of the foam, but requires considerably more power, is entirely avoided.
The construction described is merely by way of example and the invention is not limited to the precise construction shown. 1t may, for example, be arranged that the bearing member m is divided by a cross partition into two distinct elements to which the two liquid supplies may flow, in which case the passages f and 9 instead of being concentric might be segmental in cross section and arranged on opposite sides of the casting 0.
Having thus described my invention, what to secure by Letters Patent is 1 i 1.
