UNITED STATES JULIUS E. BARNES, OF
PATENT OFFICE.
WOODRUFF, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR F ONE-HALF TO LAWRENCE O. FLYNN, OF IMPERIAL, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED DOOR CHECK AND FASTENER.
Application filed September 26, 1924. Serial No. 740,037.
I Z '0 all whom it may concern: d
Be it known that I, JULrUs It. Burns, a
' citizen of the United States, residing at vTOOilIlllT, in the county of Phillips and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Door Check and Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in combined. door checks and fasteners and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device which is adapted to be associated with a swinging door or gate. 7 k One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a combined door check and fastener which will prevent the slamming of the door during the closing thereof, the device being further adapted to. hold the door in its closed position against accidental opening.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined door cheek and fastener of the above mentioned character, which 1s simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which it is designated.
v Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forminga part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the door check and fastener embodying my invention, showing the same in use.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 22 of Figure 1., and
I Figure is a similar section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a. sheet metal plate which is adapted to be secured to the door frame A adjacent the edge thereof by any suitable fastening means such as is shown at 2. In order to permit the vertical adjustment of the plate 1 on the door frame A, the plate is provided with the longitudinal slots 3 adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof for cooperation with the fa tening elements 2.
The plate 1 is bent intermediate its ends to provide the striker and keeper head 4, the same being substantially circular in cross section as is clearly illustrated in Figure 3. The purpose of the striker and keeper head will hereinafter be more fully described.
Secured to the adjacent edge of the swinging door B is a plate Fastening screws (3 are employed for securing the plate in position on the door.
The plate 5 is provided with the transversely extending stamped out portions 7 and 8 respectively, the same being provided for receiving the arms 9 and 10 respec tively of the resilient fastening member sociated with the plate. The free ends of the wire 11 are bent inwardly and are disposed in the retaining flange 12 formed on the plate 5 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figure l. The intermediate portion of the wire 11 is looped as illustrated at 13 and 14 whereby the spring arms 15 and 16 are formed, the same being adapted for engagement with the head a on the plate 1 in a manner to be presently described. The fastening member associated with the plate 5 will not become disengaged therefrom and the outer end thereof extends beyond the outer edge of the plate and the door so that the locking arms 15 and 16 may readily engage the head a.
It is obvious that when the door B is swung to a closed position, the spring arms 15 and 16 will engage the circular head l thereby preventing the door from slamming and by further moving the door inwardly, the spring arms 15 and 16 will ride over the opposite portions of the head and become disposed between the circular head. 41- and the plate 1 in the manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1. and of the drawing whereby the door is held in a closed posi- (ion with respect to the door frame against accidental disengagement therefrom. How-- ever, the door is permitted to be swung to an open position without much effort, the spring arms 15 and 16 being adapted to ride over the head 4;.
A combined door check and fastener of the above mentioned character, is especially useful upon screen doors or gates, al-
though I do not wish to limit myself to the particular use of my improved device. The
purpose of adjustably securing the plate 1 on the door frame is to allow for the sagging of the door.
The simplicity of my device enables the same to be readily and easily assembled and attached in position on the door and the door frame therefor andturther will at all tiinesbe positive and efficient in carrying out the purposes "for which the same is designatet YFhile E have shownthe preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim. p
Haring thus described the invention, what E claim is r-V A combined door check and fastener v comprisinga plate adapted to be adjiistably secured to a door frame adjacent the door contacting edgepthereof, the intermediate portion of said plate being bent upon itself to provide a cylindrical head and an a joining Web forming a keeper an additional plate adapted to be secured to a door for cooperation with the first mentioned plate, said additional plate having transverse channels formed therein and a retaining flange formed on one edge, and a wire fastener comprising a single strand ofwire bent intermediate its ends to provide a ti-shaped portion for (reaction with said keeper and a portion of said door plate,
the free end portions of therwire forming;
arms extending through said channels and having their extremities bent at angles for coirct-ing with said flange, I
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature. i
' JULIUS E. BARNES.
