G. S. WOLF COMBINED CRANK CASE DRAIN VALVE AND OIL GAUGE Filed Nov. 1'7. 1924 9 0 w a C A TTOR NE Y.
Patented Feb. 16, 1926.
UNITED STATES GEORGE S. WOLF, OF WEST DOVER, OHIO.
COMBINED CRANK-CASE DRAIN VALVE AND OIL GAUGE.
Application filed November 17, 1924.
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, GEORGE S. ou a citizen of the United States, residing at lVest Dover, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Crank-Case Drain Valves and Oil Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined crank-case drain valve and oil gauge having for an object the provision of a compactly constructed device which may be employed as a means to determine the oil level in a crank-case as Well as a means for draining the oil therefrom.
It is likewise an object to provide a device of this character which may be easily operated and in which the position of the valve openings may be readily determined.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter. I
In order that the invention and its mode of operation may be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, I have in the accompanying illustrative drawings, and in the following detailed description based thereon set out one possible embodiment of the same.
Figure 1 is an elevation of the device in use;
Figure 2 is a view illustrating the use of the valve body indicator;
Figure 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view of the portions shown in Figure 2; and V Figure 1 is a detail end view of the valve body and operating finger-piece.
In these drawings throughout which similar characters of reference designate similar parts this device is shown as comprising a valve housing or shell 5 having three radiating passage ways 6 arranged as shown in Figure 3. These openings communicate with a central bore in which I arrange a 1'0- tatable valve body 7 which is also provided with a set of passage-ways designed for alinement with the aforementioned passageways 6 in the valve casing. At one side of the valve casing is integrally formed a nut 8 which is engageable by a wrench or the like tool to effect connection between the device and a crank-case C, an external threaded nipple 9 being provided for this purpose.
Serial No. 750,338.
At one end of the valve body 7 I integrally cast a finger piece 10 by means of which said body may be rotated as is quite obvious. As a means for determining whether the valve is open or closed I arrange upon one side of the finger-piece an indicator in the form of a rib 11, and as is clear from a study of the drawings, when this rib is visible from the top it is an indication that the valve is open as shown in Figures 2 and 3.
It is quite obvious that with a three-way valve as described, oil may be readily drained from a crank-case and simultaneously with such. draining the gauge may he observed should it be desired to leave any of the oil in the crank-case. It is also clear that turning of the fingeupiece 10 to the position shown in Figure 1, will effect closing of the valve and permit functioning of the gauge.
This gauge as illustrated comprises a glass sight tube 12 which supported within a tube frame or pocket 3 whose lower end is screw threadedly engaged in a socket 5 integrally formed with the valve shell. The upper end of this tube trame or pocket 1.?) is closed by means oi a nut 1t having a central opening in which is disposed a closure carrying neck 15. The closure or cap 16 is hinged to this neck and is normally retained in closed position by means of a coil spring 17. This structiu'e as is quite clear provides means whereby the interior of the sight tube 12 may be readily cleaned.
A packing gasket 18 is interposed between the lower end of the sight tube and the adjacent portion of the socket 5 whereby leakage of oil will be prevented.
Certain minor changes in the details of" construction may be resorted to, and such of these changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims, I consider within the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
In combination, a crank-case having a threaded opening in one side wall, a valve casing having a transverse bore, three radial passage-ways extending from the bore through said valve casing, a rotatable valve body arranged in the bore and having passage-ways alinable at times with the More mentioned passage-ways, a threaded nipple Hill carried by the valve casing and threaded into the opening 111 said crank-case, a cuplike internally threaded socket integrally formed at one side of the CEtSID and havb mg one of said passage-Ways opening centrally thereint-o, a sight tube having one end set into the socket, a tubular frame about said sight tube and having one end threaded into the socket, and a hinged spring actuatnature.
GEORGE S. lVOLF.
