HENRY G. THOMPSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PRESSED-METAL HOOK AND METHOD OF MAKING- THE SAME.
Application filed May 31, 1922. Serial No. 565,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY G. Thompson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ghio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pressed-Metal i V Hooksand Methods of Waking the Same,
of which the following is a full, clear, and
exact description. r
The present invention relates to a pressed metal article which comprises a base or fastening part'and a hook or angularly extending partpand in the instance shown there are two hooks. The use of the article having one hook will fit the article for use in, certain instances, and with two hooks will enable it to be used for other purposes, as for instance, the holding of ropes by which awnings, flags, etc., are'raised and held in position. 7
- The object of theinvention is to produce an article of the character and kind from a blank of sheet metal, bending the same by certain operations performed in dies, and finally producing anarticle which is better 'than a cast article, and can be produced at a lower cost of manufacture.
Reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank made from sheet metal; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the blank in partly formed condition; Fig.3 is an end view of the partially formed blank shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a section on the line H of Fig. 2; 'Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the par-' 'tially formed blank shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is an elevation with portions in section of the'completed article; Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7 of Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the article shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the article shown in Fi 6; Fig. 10 is an elevation with portions in section of a modified form; and Fig. 11 is a bottom plan view of the device'shown in Fig. 10.
Iii-making the article a blank is formed which has what may be termed a central portion 1, an extending arm 2, and optional- -'ly, an oppositely extending arm 3. The
b'lankas formed the end as suggested at 2 and 3, and at points adjacent to the base the blank is made to extend into pointed portions 2 2,
has the arms 2 tapering at "of the points 2", 2 and 3, 3
lies all in the same plane, so that to provide openings, such as indicated at l, which serve to receive screws. T he blank in the condition which has been indicated is perfectly flat.
In the next operation in forming the article the same is bent upon a longitudinal axis so that the arms 2 and 3 are formed into a U-shape, such for instance as indicated in Fig. l. These arms at then end portion are brought closer together than they are further back, and this is illust'ated by reference to Fig. 3, which is an end elevation of the partially formed article shown in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the end of the arm 2 which is represented at 3 is narrower than that portion of the arm which is represented by 3 At the same time that these arms 2 and 3 are formed into the U shape suggested, they are bent up with respect to the central portion 1 of the blank, assuming a curved direction with respect to the central portion 1. This central portion 1 in the bending of the arms is provided with downwardly extending flanges such as indicated at 1 and 1 which flanges extend along the sides and merge with what may be termed the side members of the U shape which is given to the arms.
In this same operation the holes t are countersunk, which appears in Fig. 5, but more clearly appears in Figs. 6 and 7, which figures, however, show the article in linished form.
After the article has been formed up, as shown in Fig. 5, the sides or skirts of the U-shaped portion are still spread apart and the pointed portions 2 2, 3", 3, are spread apart.
In the next operation the flanges of the arms 2 and 3 are bent over and brought together, while the points 3", 3, and the points 2 2, are also rolled over and brought into contact. This produces the finished article which on the under side has the appearance which is shown in Fig. 8. By the method which has been described the arms 2 and 3 are given a substantial tubular shape, while the central portion 1 has a depending flange at the sides thereof, and by the bending in this flange is merged into the ends of the arms. There fore the reverse side of the article presents a perfectly flat marginal edge, which edge when the device is fastened to a wall or board there V scribed.
and 11 is used the V the blank said blank by moving the edges of the arm portion toward each other: to assume all is no tipping of the device, and additionally it will be noted that the flange on the reverse side of the central portion 1 forms a box-like structure which is without a cover and permits the passage of screws or other fastening implements through the central portion, and into the wood or other substance which is to support the articlein question. 7 I In order to strengthen the central portion 1' a bead may be formed inthe upper portion, or the part which is between the outwardly extending arms 2 and 3, which bead is represented at 1 in Fig. 8.
In Fig. 10 there is shown a slightly modi ified form, and this form is to provide for "the, use of a single hole,
such as indicatedat. it in Figs. l and 11, mstead ofthe two holes which are shown in the, other figures. When a single hole is used it is desirable to pro vide some means for preventing the article turning about the screw or nail, and fOf'UllS purpose the blank 18 formed to:have one or more extending points 5, these being formed when the blank is formed.
Otherwise, the blank and the formation of the article is precisely the sameas that which has been de- ,When the article as shown in Figs. points 5 will gouge into the materialto which the device is fastened, so that when the screw or nailor other fastening 'deviceis inserted through the opening 4 and tightened, the device will not only be held to its mounting, but will likewise be prevented from turning about the same.
Having described my invention, I claim 3 s l l 1. The method of forming a hooklike article which comprises blanking out of sheet metala blankihaving acentral portion and an extending arm, 7
