INVENTOR WILL/(7M l1 )tu/re ATTORNEY Patented Feb. Q,
uNirsn s'rar ss WILLIAM M. YOUNG, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
TREE-LIGHT noLnnia.
Application filed August 18, 1924.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oakland, county of Alameda, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Tree-Light Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to light holders, and particularly to holders having jaws arranged to grip the branch of a tree, or the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a tree-light holder which is arranged to hold either a candle, an electric lamp socket, or both, as may be desired.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is so arranged that the major portion thereof will be positioned on or above a supporting object when it is in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tree-light holder of the character described which may be simply formed with a minimum of parts and operations.
The invention possesses other objects and features of advantage, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showing made by the said drawings and description, as I may adopt variations of the preferred form within. the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to said drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of the holder of my invention mounted on a limb and showing a lamp socket supported thereby.
Figure 2 is a side view of the device showing a candle supported thereby part of the forward portion being broken away to show details of construction.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the device taken on the line 33 in Figure 1.
Figures 41. and 5 are plan views of blanks from which portions of the device are arranged to be formed.
In thepresent embodiment of the invention, the tree-light holder comprises members 6 and 7 pivotally connected in opposed relation and having jaws 8 and 9 formed on a pair of cooperating ends 11 and 12. As here shown, pivotal connection of the members 6 and 7 is efiected by means of Serial No. 732,612.
cooperating extensions 13 bent laterally inwardly and having perforations 14: therein through which a pivot 16 is arranged to be placed to pivotally hold the members together, it being noted that the pivotal axis thus extends transversely of the members. The jaw portions of the members. 6 and 7 are preferably formed to extend laterally of the lower side of the members, for a reason to be hereinafter explained, and are provided with teeth 17 inwardly inclined and arranged to resiliently engage opposite sides of a supporting member, such as the limb 18 here shown. Resilient engagement of the jaws with the limb 18 is provided for in any suitable manner, a helical spring 19 being hereshown provided encircling the pivot 16 and having the opposite ends 21 and 22 thereof resiliently engaging the inside surfaces of the members 6 and 7.
The members 6 and 7 are each formed with a receptacle arranged to receive and hold a source of light such as a candle or small electric light. As here shown, the end 23 of the member 6 is arranged to be bent to form a hollow cylindrical holder 24 and is also provided with a pair of lateral extensions 25 formed on the lower side thereof adjacent the extension 18 and arranged to be bent laterally of the body of the member to partly close the holder 24 at the bottom to define a receptacle for the base of a candle 27. On the other hand, a similarly formed holder 28 is provided at the end 29 of the member 7 but this holder is preferably without any closure means for the bottom, so that the wires 31 of an electric lamp socket 352 may conveniently extend therethrough. While the lamp socket 32 here shown is provided with a shoulder which holds it from slipping through the holder, it will be obvious that the holder may be readily bent or otherwise adapted to hold a socket of other forms. To insure the retention of the wires 81 in the holder and at the same time permit the ready placing of the wires therein, the holder forming portion 29 of the member 7 is made of such length that the free end 33 extends into the holder receptacle to overlap a portion of the wall thereof, the end being preferably arranged to be in spaced relation from the adjacent receptacle wall when the socket is not positioned therein.
It will-nowbe: noted thatithe device, as hereformed, is particularly adaptedto be arranged longitudinally of and V chiefly above the supporting ,object. Since limbs or other objects on which the device is to be mounted may be frequently horizontally disposed, the downward extension of portions of the jaws 8 and, 9 is necessary to insure clamping of the device with the axes of the holders vertically disposed, as will be most usually *desired. Furthermore, it Will-he understood that the -device-=may be readilypositioned with the "bottom cross extensions 13 restingon top of the supporting--1nember \vherr the --jaws are clamped on'the latter,= so that-pivotalstrain on'the jaws will be entirely avoided-and steadiness of positioningqvilltherefore be assured.
I claim 1.'-A- tree-light-holder comprising a pair of pivotally-conneeted spring-pressed jaw members, a receptacle for: a :source of light on one of said members, and sets of teeth provided oneaoh of-said members and extending transversely therefrom in cooperating relation.
2. A tree-light holder comprising a pair ofspring-pressedjaw members pivoted together intermediate their ends, a receptacle provided on one of said'members adjacent one end thereof and having its axis eXtending parallel to" the pivotalaxis ofsaid members, and teeth-provided onsaid members adjaeent thc other'end'thereof and extend ing transversely therefrom in cooperating relation.
In testimony whereof, I "have hereunto set my hand at- Oakland, California, this 3rd day of'July, 1924.
