UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD FBEDERIC sncnnrnn, or YPELAW-ONY-TYNE, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR To a. ammonia & COMPANY LIMITED, or HEBBUBN-ON-TYNE, DURHAM, nnenanna BRITISH COMPANY L merald; WALL rum,
Application filed September 19, 1923 Serial Nb. 663,664.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HAROLD FREDERIO SECRETAN, a subject of the King of England, andresiding at Pelaw-on-Tyne, Dur- 6 ham, in England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric-Wall Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electric wall 1 plugs and has particular reference to plugs of the type in which the pins are surroundedby a casing preferably of metal and earthed. In order that access to the" pins and their connections may be readily obtained, according to this. invention the casing or cover is. divided say into two parts which are held together by a screwed collar or other, easily removable fastening, thismember preferably also forming a cord P- a In one. convenient construction the case ing is cylindrical and is provided at one end with a cap on the inside of which. the
' insulating block holding the pins is mount ed. A tubular extension projects sideways from the casing, part of this tube be'ng integral with or attached to the cap and the other partintegral with the cylindrical por- I tion. This tubular extension is screw-- 80 threaded and when'the cap is in place the two parts of the tube are engaged by a screwed collar which holds the two portions of the casing firmly together. Conveniently the screwed collar has an internal $5 flange at its outer end serving directly or indirectly to compress a rubber gland which surrounds the conductors which through the tubular extension, thus causing the gland to act as-acord grip. That 40 part of the insulated conductor adjacent to the tubular extension may be surrounded in a well known way with a short length of flexible metallic tubing acting as a guard. and the screwed collar may be arranged to press the end of this metallic tubing firmly against the rubber gland.
The cap may be provided with a recess.
containing a screw and washer or similar connection for an earthing wire which may W thus be sunk below the surface of the cap,
thereby protecting the hand of the operator from amage.
If desired the cap may be provided with :tion of plug according to this pass a pivoted handle so that the wall plug may be readily removed from its socket;
In'the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevation of one construcwith a portion broken'away, and
Figure 2 is a plan. Like letters indicate like out the drawin s. Y
A; (Fi' re 1 is a. block of insulating material in which contact pins B are mountparts through? ed and connected to the ends of the conductors in a flexible cable Cf Details of this block, the pins and connections are not shown as they may be of usual constr uction invention I and do not'inthemselves form part of the to present invention.
The metal cover or casing is in two parts, a cylindrical portion D and a cap D. Thecyllndrical portion-D is provided-with an extension D in the form of a half tube and the cap D with a similar extension D.
When the two parts of the casin are as,
sembled the two half tubes, w ich are I screwthreaded, form a screwed tube which isengaged by a screwed collar E.' This collar holds the two parts of the casing securely in position but when it is withdrawn allows the cap D and its extension D to be lifted off, giving ready. accessto the block A and the connections to the fins In the example illustrated the screwed collar E also serves as a cord grip as, when it is screwed on, it compresses a rubber washer or collar F between the end of the tube formed by the extensions D and D and the end of a short flexible sleeve or guard G through which the cable 0 asses, the (land fit this guard being engaged the col- In the top of the cap D is'a recess D containing a washer and screw H which afto secureby Letters L end thereof, an insulatin construction may be varied, for instance the two parts of the casing need not necessarily be secured together by means of they screwed collar E, some other device, such for instance as a sliding collarfl with a'bayo-- net joint, being used for the purpose.
What I claim as m invention and desire 'atent is 2-- 1. In an electricalattachment plug, incombination, a sleeve portion, a cap closing one block carried by said cap, contacts mounte in said block and said cap and sleeve in end thereof, an insulatin saidcap, contacts mounte in said block and protected by said sleeve portiion, a half tubular extension projecting radially from each said sleeve portion and said cap and de tachable means to engage said half tubular ,extensions to secure the same together for the purposedescribed.
3. In an electrical attachment plug, in combination, a sleeve portion, a cap for one end thereof, an insulating block carried by said cap, contacts mounted in said block and rotected by saidsleeve portion, a'half tubu ar extension projecting radially from each said sleeve portion and said cap, a conductor connected to said contacts, a protecting sleeve thereon, and detachable means to engage and secure said half tubular extensions together and to secure said sleeve thereto. p
In testimony whereof I have signed my name-to this specification. a
HAROLD FREDERIC SECRETAN.
