To all whom it may concern:
Be it known ,that I, CHARLES Srrnvoon,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, in the county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Safety Device for Railroad Switches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means for locking the switch points of a railroad track against movement.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
lVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a fragmental top plan wherein the lid has been opened, parts being broken away; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-8 of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a. section on the line 4--4 of Figure 1: Figure 5 is a'section 0n the line 55 of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a section on the line 66 of Figure 2; Figure 7 is a fragmental bottom plan of the block wherein certain movable parts of the device operate.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate the movable switch points of a railroadtrack, the
switch points being connected by a bridle 3 adapted, as indicated at 4, to be connected by any suitable means for drawing the switch, the same constituting no part of the present invention.
A link 5 extends along one side of a tie 6 and is connected at 7 to the switch point 1, the connection at 7 being of such a nature as to afford a. slight pivotal movement between the link 5 and the switch point 1. The link 5 is upwardly offset, as shown'in Figure 4. so that the lower surface of the outer end 9 of the link is about flush with the upper surface of the tie 6. The outer end 9 of the link 5 is supplied with an in wardly extend-ed arm 10 disposed about at right angles to the end 9, the arm 10 being equipped at its'inner end with an upstanding vertical finger 11.
The numeral 12 designates a member in the form of a block, secured to the tie 6, or mounted otherwise in a stable way. In the lower surface of the block 12 there is a horizontal recess 14 shown in Figures 7 and 6. Thearm 10 of the link 5 slides in the recess 14. The block 12 has a vertical guideway or slot 15 which communicates at its lower end with the recess 14. The finger 11 of the link 5 slides in the guideway 15. In the upper surface of the block 12 there is a transverse seat or slot 16. The seat 16 intersects the vertical guideway 15.
The numeral 17 denotes a lid having hinge eyes 18 shown in Figure 2. The hinge eyes 18 on the lid 17 cooperate with hinge eyes 19 on one side of the block 12. A hinge pintle or shaft 20 extends through the eyes 18 and 19. At its outer end, the shaft 20 has a handle 21. At its inner end, the shaft 20 is supplied with a keeper 22 in the form of an arm. One edge of the lid 17 which is remote from the hinge eyes 18 and 19 is supplied with a depending flange 23 shown in Figure 4. The keeper 22 on the shaft 20 extends throughthe flange 23. The keeper 22 is adapted to be received in the seat or slot 16 of the block 12 (Figure 8) and cooperates with the linger 11 on the link 5 (Figure 6). Any suitable means may be provided for holding the lid 17 closed. The free edge of the lid 17 may be equipped with a horizontal lip 24 through which passes a projection 25 on the block 12, the projection 25 having an opening 26, adapted to receive a lock or seal, (not shown).
Then the lid 17 is closed on the block 12, the keeper 22 is located in the seat 16, and, coasting with the finger 11 of the link 5, prevents the link 5 from moving endwise. Because the link 5 cannot move endwise, the switch points 1 and 2 are held secured either for the main line or for the siding, as may be. By means of the handle 21, the shaft 20 may be rocked, the keeper 22 swinging the lid 17 to open position, because the keeper is received in theflange 23 on the lid 17. When the lid 17 and the keeper 22 move to open position, the keeper passes out of the transverse seat 16 in the block 12, and out of engagement with the finger 11 on the link 5, thus setting the link 5 free for longitudinal movement, to permit a throwing of the switch points 1 and 2. Any suitable locking device (not shown) is engaged in the opening 26 of the projection 25 on the block 12, the lid 17 cannot be opened, and, consequently, the keeper 22 is held in the path of movement of the finger 11 on the link 5, a longitudinal shifting of the link, and a movement of the switch points 1 and 2 being impossible.
