Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH W. GESAMAN, 0F MASSILLON, OHIO IMPROVEMENT IN SPRINKLlNG-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,170, dated November 24, 1874; application iled September 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. GEsAMAN, of Massillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sprinkling-Gans; and
Y thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact specification thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the said invention.
My `invention relates to certain improvements in sprinkling-cans for garden or indoor use, the special object of said invention being to adapt the can to use in applying solutions to plants for destroying insects thereon, where it becomes desirable to have the ilow of the solution under easy control, to prevent its waste, and to sprinkle in upward and horizontal as well as in downward directions, in order to reach all parts of the infested plant. To this end said invention consists in placing the discharge-spout of the can under the bottom of the can, and extending it out from this point in a horizontal position, and constructing the sprinkling-spout with a iattened head, having the discharge-holes in the flat face thereof, so that by turning the spout the sprinkling-duid may be directed in any desired direction; also, in the combination of a weighted valve and thumb-latch with the can and handle, by means of which the operator can control the flow of the fluid by the thumb of the hand grasping the can-handle, all of which is hereinafter more fully shown.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of can embodying my improvements, with the lower part shown in section to display its construction. Fi'g. 2 is a sec-.
tional view of the lower part of same with valve and sprinkler removed. Figs. 3 and 4 are plan views of the sprinkling-spout and thumb-latch.
A is the body of the can, supported on a base, A. B is the handle, and G the dischargespout. This spout Gis attached to the bottom of the can A, and extends out in a horizontal direction through the basevA, as shown, and a hole, a, connects the spout with the interior of the can. The sprinkling-spout D d consists of the neck d, which lits on the spout C, and on the end of which is the iiattened head D,
having discharge-holes in its fiat face, as shown in Fig. 4, from which it will be seen that, by turning the sprinkling-spout D d around on the spout() as an axis, the sprinkling-fluid can be oted on a cross-wire, g, in the handle B, so that the operator, by pressing the thumb of the hand by which he grasps the handle B on the latch G, can raise the valve E to a position, Ef, indicated by dotted lines, to allow of the discharge of the fluid as desired.
The slide-hook H h, shown in Fig. 1, and in detached end view at the side of same, can be slid up to hold the latch G in position (shown by dotted lines) when the sprinkling is to be unintermitted; or, by sliding said hook up under the latch G, the amount which the valve E can be raised, and the consequent discharge of the sprinkling-fluid, can be regulated at pleasure.
The thumb-latch G is formed from a single piece of wire by bending it into the U-shape m, turning the eyes a n on the arms of said U, and bending each arm into a second U-shape, r, the adjoining arms t t of which lay side by side over the hookf of the valve-rod F, which attaches to the part m. These arms t t keep the valveE from being thrown up too high by a sudden pressing down of the latch G, and also allow of the easy removal ofthe valve and rod by spreading said arms apart to allow the hook f to be taken off from the part m of the latch G.
What I claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sprinkling-spout D d, made with a flattened head, D, with discharge-holes in the flattened face thereof, and arranged so as to be turned on the spout C to sprinkle in a downward, lateral, or upward direction, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the weighted valve E e, pvoted thumb-latch G, and handle B, the the handle B and thumb-latch G, substantial] y several parts being arranged and unit-ed subas und for the purpose herein specified. stautiully as and for the purpose specified. As evidence of the foregoing, Witness my 3. The thumb-latch Gr, formed of a single hand this Sth day of J uly, 1874. piece of wire bent into the form m n n r r t t shown, substantially as and for the purpose Witnesses: speoied. Q. W. REEVES,
4. The side-hook H h, in combination with JOSEPH W. GESAMAN.
ISAAC ULMAN.
