IMPROVEMENT lN' EXPANDING PULLEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,150, dated November 24, 1874; application filed April 23, 1874.
.To all whom it may concern:
ily increased or diminished; and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, which represents a side view of the pulley, with part removed in order to illustrate my invention, Figure 2 being a sectional view, and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 detached views of parts of the device.
To a tube,B, is secured a hub,D, from which radiate any number of suitable arms, (1, (six in the present instance,) each arm being of the sectional form shown in Fig. 3, so that between it and arms 6 on a plate, E, there may be a space for the snug reception and guidance of a sliding bar, G, each bar carrying at its end a section, H, one-sixth (or nearly so in the present instancelof the periphery of the pulley. The plate E is secured to the arms (I by the bolts f, which pass through slots f in the bars G, so that the latter can slide to and fro radially. Spiral springst' extend from the bolts to the ends of the slots in the bars, as shown in Fig. 4, and the tendency of these springs is to move the bars G inward, and thus to contract the diameter of the pulley. The hub h of a wheel, I, fits snugly, but so as to turn and slide freely in a central opening in the plate E, and this hub of the wheel is threaded internally to accord with a screw formed on the tube 13. To the hub of the wheel I is connected a hollow cone, M, in the manner best observed in the detached view, Fig. 5, so that, while the wheel can be turned independently of the cone,
any longitudinal movement of the former must be simultaneously followed by a like movement of the latter. The tube Bis secured to the shaft A in any convenient manner.
011 so turning the Wheel I that its hub it will be moved in the direction of the arrow, the cone M, simultaneously acting on the inner ends of all six sliding bars G, must push the latter outward, and consequently expand the diameter of the pulley; but on so turning the wheel that the cone will move in a contrary direction, the bars will be relieved, and the springs 'i will retract them, and consequently contract the diameter of the pulley.
I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to claim, broadly, a pulley made in sections which can be expanded by a central cone operated by a screw; but
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the sections H of the pulley, and their arms guided on the hub D, with the threaded tube B, the screw-wheel or nut I adapted to the said tube, and the cone M, all operating in the manner and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the hub D, and its guiding arms (I, with the plate E, bolts f, slotted bars G, and springs t'.
3. The threaded tube B, the wheel I adapted to the same, and carrying the cone M, in combination with the hub D, plate E, and guided bars G.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. CHARLES A. BRAND. NVitnesses EDMUND B. FRAZER, DAVID ROBINETT.
