Description

Feb. 2 1926. V 1,571,324
F. DIEHL GLUE MACHINE Filed June 6,
Patented Feb. 2, 1926.
UNITED STATES FRANK DIEHL, 0F WABASH, INDIANA.
GLUE MACHINE.
Application filed June 6,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK DIEHL, a c1tizen of the United States, residing at Wabash, in the county of Wabash and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Glue Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an apparatus especially designed for handling cold glue, the primary object of the invention being to provide novel means whereby a continuous flow of glue may pass to a glue spreader used in securing veneer to its foundation.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus wherein the glue remaining in the pipes that establish communication between a supply tank and a glue spreader may be returned to the mixing tank through the pipes of the apparatus.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing The figure illustrates a diagrammatical view disclosing a plurality of tanks and pipes providing communication between the tanks.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a mixing tank which is supplied with a suitable agitator not shown, for mixing the glue in the tank.
The tank 5 is supported on the legs 6 that are mounted on a suitable platform indicated at 7, it being understood that the tank 5 may be positioned on the floor above the tank 8 in order that the glue may gravitate into tank 8 from the mixing tank 5.
Pipe 9 establishes communication between the mixing tank 5 and reserve tank 8, valve 10 being provided at the upper end of the pipe 9 to control the passage of glue through the pipe 9 and into the reserve tank 8.
The spreader is indicated at 11 and communicates With the reserve tank 8 through pipes 12, 13 and 14, valves 15 being provided in the pipes 12 and 13 for controlling the passage of fluid to the spreader. The
1923. Serial No. 643,790.
spreader 11 may be of the conventional con-- struction and since the construction of the spreader forms no part of the invention, a detail disclosure thereof is omitted.
The pipes 12 and 13 communicate with the pipe let which in turn connects with,
the pipe 16 that has one end thereof extended into the reserve tank 8 at the bottom thereof, the bottom being indicated at 17 and shown as having inclined walls to cause material contained in the tank 8 to feed into the pipe 16.
Communicating with the pipe 16 is a return pipe 18 that has its upper extremity disposed in a position to discharge material into the tank 5 as clearly shown by the drawing, there being provided a valve 19 adjacent to the lower end of the pipe 18 to control the passage of fluid to the pipe 18.
Compressed air pipes 20 and 21 extend into the reserve tank 8, which pipes have connection with a suitable source of air supply so that by operating the valves 22, the air may enter tank 8 to force the material contained therein, from the tank 8.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that by opening valves 10 and 15 and by closin valve 19, communication is established between the mixer tank 5 and spreader, through pipes 9, tank 8 and pipes 12, 13,
- 14C and 16. The tank 8 is filled with glue by opening the valve 10 whereupon the glue passes into tank 8' and after tank 8 becomes filled, the valve 10 is closed, and the valves 22 opened, admitting air under pressure to the reserve tank 8. The air pressure in the reserve tank 8 forces the glue through the pipes 12, 13, 14 and 16, and into the spreader, it being understood that the valves 15 have been opened to admit the glue to the spreader. When it is desired to shut off the passage of the glue to the spreader the valves 15 are closed and the valve 19 is opened, allowing the air pressure in the reserve tank 8 to force the glue contained therein, through the pipe 18 to the mixer tank 5 where the same may be again mixed and prepared for use.
What is claimed as new is 1 1. A device for supplying glue to a spreading machine comprising a mixing tank, a reserve tank disposed below the mixing tank, a pipe for establishing communication between the tank to allow material to pass into the reserve tank, a pipe leading from the bottom of the reserve tank and Ill) communicating With the spreading machine, valves for cont-rolling the passage of material to the spreading machine, a pipe establishing communication between the last mentioned pipe and the mixing tank, avalve for controlling the passage of material through the latter pipe, pipes for supplying air under pressure to the reserve tank to force material therefrom, and the valves for controlling the passage of fluid to the spreading machine adapted to be closed to permit the material from the reserve tank to be returned to the mixing tank.
2. A machine for handling glue comprising an elevated mixing tank, a closed feed tank positioned under the mixing tank, a pipe providing communication between the tanks, a valve for controlling the passage of glue through the pipe, a compressed air supply pipe in communication with the feed tank, a pipe leading from the bottom of the feed tank to deliver glue from the feed tank, a pipe establishing communication between the last mentioned pipe and mixing tank, and valve members for controlling the passage of fluid through the latter pipes.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature.
FRANK DIEHL.
