To all whom may concern:
Be it lrnov-in that 1, Roy K. Dennison, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Machias, in the county of ffashington and State of lviaine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object the provision of a simple, durable and easily actuated fluid motor driven toy, which, while broadly relating to those classes which comprise devices lr'nown to the art as mechanically actuated toys and which have for their object, t is exhibition of movable miniature figures of animate or inanin'iate objects, has yet more particular relation to that branch of said classes which contemplates not only the provision of said movable miniature figures of animate or inanimate objects, but also the case or casing, within which such miniature figures are mounted to be actuated and the peculiar means and manner by and in which they are so mounted and actuated.
In accordance with the foregoing and for the purpose of producing a simple, cheap and durable device of the type set forth my inv ntion, in its present adaptation, consists primarily, in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the case, or casing wherein the operative devices comprised in said invention, are to be located and to operate.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement and combination of the operative devices comprised in my invention, with each other and, with the enclosing case wherein they are mounted to operate, substantially as is hereinafter described and iullustrated in the accompanying; drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 illustrates, in side elevation, the case or casing wherein the operative portions of my improved motor driven toy are located and which, for the purposes of the present invention, is made to represent a building.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the case, or casing shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line mm, through Figure 2, to more clearly illustrate the construction of the enclosing case or casing wherein the several operative parts of my invention are to be located, said operative parts and the position said parts occupy in the case or casg- Figures l, 5 and 6, respectively illustrate the upper, the lower and the central parts or sections, comprised in the case or casing and also the several operative devices in the position they occupy within the sections named, when said sections are assembled to be rigidly secured together by a water tight connection to positively ensure watertight oints therebetween.
Figure 7, is a top plan view of the lower section comprised in the case or casing of my invention and clearly sets forth the arrangement, upon the upper surface thereof, of the major portion of the operative devices of the toy.
Figure 8, is a detail sectional view taken on the line n-n, of Fig. 5 when looking upwardly in the direction of the arrow a, to
show both the construction and the position of the fluid inlet valve which hinged to the lower surface of the top of "said se'c'tion closes the opening or fluid port therethrough.

Figure 11, illustrates in a diagrammatic view, the manner in which my improved motor toy is packed for shipment.
Similar numerals and letters of reference in the several figures of the drawings, denote similar parts.
In the present embodiment of my invention, I employ for the reception of the movable devices, which form a part of my invention, as well as for the reception of the medium by which such devices are operated, a case or casing 1, which I preferably construct, for the purpose of facilitating the manufacture of the device, in three parts or sections, to wit, an upper section A, into which the motor actuating medium of the toy is introduced and from which it is con ducted to fulfil its ultimate purpose, a lower section B, into which said actuating medium is e )nducted after it has accomplished its 1? urpose and from which it is returned to the upper section A, and an intermediate section C, within which the devices to be actuated by said actuating medium are located to such end.
It is to be distinctly understood that the sections A, B and G, areat their junctions with each otherto be rigidly secured together by a water tight connection to the end that leakage from such joints shall be wholly prevented, such construction based upon the fact that the several movable parts comprised in my invention, are to be actuated by a medium whichin the present consists of water and that because of such fact leakage. or the discharge of said fluid from one to the other of said sections shall not occur, save alone along predetermined routes or through conduits formed for such purpose and since the section C, which is interposed between said upper and lower sections A and B, is designed to contain a motor that is to be actuated and to actuate mechanical devices of any desired form by and through the actuating medium named, and also to the end that the mechanical devices within the section C, other than the fluid driven motor therewithin, may be kept as free as possible from the fluid by which the mechanical devices are operated, the routes and conduits above referred to, are preferably of two types, one of which, when the casing is standing upon its base, is located above and conducts the actuating fluid to and upon the motor and thence to the lower section B, while the other type of said conduit-which I preferably form of large diametero1- erates when the device is being turned in the direction indicated by the arrows D,-see Figure 1,to conduct the fluid from the lower section B, to and into the upper section A, to again repeat the operation above set forth, when the device has been turned one full revolution and again placed upon its base.
It is to be distinctly understood that the section C, of the casing 1, within which the several operative devices, comprised in my invention, are housed or located-when the sections A, B and C, are rigidly secured together by watertight connections to form said single casing 1-consists essentially in a single piece of suitable material having parallel side edges and bent at predetermined points to form the quadrangular shaped section C. see Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 6, which clearly set forth said section both as it appears when unpliantly made fast to the sections A and B, by methods commonly employed to accomplish such end, as shown in said Figs. 1, 2, and which illustrate in a side, an end and a ectional view respectively, the device as it appears when ready for use, or in Fig. 6, wherein said quadrangular shaped section C,
is shown as placed intermediate of the upper end and the lower sections A, B, and in position to be brought into contact with and made fast to said sections in manner hereinbefore set forth.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing recited ends, as also of ends other than those named, I provide that the bottom 2, of the lower section B, of the case or casing of my improved toy, shall, at both the front and rear faces of said casing, project outwardly, as shown at 3, to form a stable base for said toy when it is in use: I also provide each of said outwardly projecting flanges 3, of the base at or near the middle part thereof, with semi-circular indents 4-, for a purpose presently to be explained.
I further provide that the side walls and ends of said section B, shall at their junction with the top of such section, be crimped inwardly as shown at 5, to extend within and closely engage the inner surface of the section C, at the bottom edge 6, thereof to facilitate the permanent water tight connection of the sections B and C, together.
I provide the top 7, of the section B, at like distances from its side edges, with a de pressed portion 8, which extending at an incline from a point 9, near the middle of said top 7, terminates at a port or opening 10, formed through said top 7, at a short distance from the side wall 11, of the section B, see Figures 3 and 7.
I also provide the top 7, of said section B, upon its lower surface within the fluid receiving chamber 12, formed therein,with a valve 13, which hinged at 14, to the lower surface of the top 7, is provided with a weight 15, to swing said valve 13, into contactwith the port or opening 10, to pre vent the passage of water from the chamber 12, to and into section C, of the case or casing 1, should the toy be turned in the wrong direction during the return of the fluid from chamber 12, to normal starting position here inafter to be noted: I further provide the lower section B, at its end opposite that having the port or opening 10, with a tube 16, which secured to and opening through the top of said section B, extends thence e11- tirely through the central section C, (when the sections A, B and C, are connected together) to enter and be tightly pressed into the lower end of a similar tube 17, which secured to and opening through the bottom of the section A, extends thence upwardly, within said section nearly to the top thereof as shown: To ensure close engagement between the contaoting ends of the tubes 16 and 17, I make each thereof in slightly tapering form from top to bottom as shown in It is to be understood that the tubes 16 and 17, acting in conjunction form the con duit hereinbefore referred to, for the return of the motor actuating fluid from the lower to the upper sections of my device, and that, because of such fact, I purposely form such tubes of large diameter to more quickly attain the desired end.
I provide that the sides of the upper section A, near their junction with the bottom 18, thereof shall be crimp'ed, as shown at 19, to extend within and closely fit and engage with the upper edge of the central section C, to facilitate the permanent water tight connection of the sections A and C, together.
Within said section C, upon. a shaft 20, journaled in supports 21 and 22, which are secured to and extend upwardly from the top 7, of the lower section B, I mount a miniature overshot wheel 23, placed to receive and be rotated by the flow of water from the discharge pipe 24, which, secured to and opening through the bottom 18, of the upper section A, is arranged to accomplish such end. Upon the shaft 20, at one side of the water wheel 23, I mount, for the purposes of the present arrangement of my invention, a miniature circular saw 25, and upon the opposite side of said. wheel 1 form, in the shaft, a crank arm 26, and arrange that said arm operates in a vertical slot 27, formed through the enlarged flattened middle portion of a bar 28, which is mounted to be moved back and forth in supports 29, which extend from the top 7, of section B of the casing 1.
It is to be understood that any desired device may be employed to be moved instead of the miniature saw'and the reciprocating bar named above.
It will also be understood that the fluid which actuates the wheel 23, will pass therefrom to and into the depressed portion 8,
of the top of section B, and thence to and through the port 10, to chamber 12 of section B. e
I provide the opposite sides and ends of the section C,with a transparent medium 30, preferably glass, through which the movements of the several devices within said casing C, is plainly visible and which is securely connected to the walls of said section.
1 preferably provide the top of the section A, of the case or casing 1,.with a cap or cover 31, roof shaped, that is to say, having a ridge 32, and inclined portions 83 and 34, extending thence to the side edges of said section, such construction to ensure the complete and full rotation of the device in the direction indicated by the arrows D.
To the roof shaped top 31, preferably at the middle thereof, I secure a short tube 35, having a screw threaded inner surface to receive a flanged screw threaded plug 36, the tube to conduct the water into the chamber within the section A, and the plug to close said tube against leakage of water therefrom.
In Fig. 10, I have illustrated a modified form of the port or opening 10, through which the actuating fluid passes from the inclined portion on the to of section B, to and into the chamber 12,1;1erebelow, and such modification consists essentially in forming the port noted, of far less width, and of a greater length than the ports shown in Figs. 3 and. 7.
In Figure 11, of the drawings, I have illus trated the manner in which my improved mechanical toy is packed for shipment, in said Fig. 11, it will be noted that, despite the projecting base of each of said toys, the sides of adjoining toys are in contact with each other, such result being consequent upon the reversal of adjoining toys by which, when the toys are placed together, the tube 35, upon one thereof will extend into the semi-circular recess in the base of the other, thus bringing the sides of the toys into contact.
In practice the sections A, B and G, are separately constructed and the joints thereof made watertight to prevent all leakage therefrom, and during such construction, the several operative parts of the device, as well as the fluid conduits thereof, are placed in operative position, as shown in the several figures of the drawings, after which the said sections are by a water tight connection rigidly secured together to form the case or casing 1 as has been hereinbefore set forth.
Having thus described the present embodiment of my invention I claim the right to such modifications thereof as fall within the scope and limit of the claims appended hereto.
I claim as my invention and desire to cure by Letters Patent- 1. In a fluid actuated mechanical toy an enclosing case comprising an independent ly constructed upper section (A) having a top, bottom, sides and ends, said sides and ends at their junction with the bottom criinped to closely engage an intermediate section, an independently constructed lower section (13) having a bottom, top, sides and ends, said sides and ends at their junction with said top crimped to engage said intermediate section, an independently construct ed intermediate section ((7) having sides and ends only to engage with and be rigidly secured by a water tight connection at its top and bottom edges respectively to the crimpe d portions of the upper and lower sections (A and B) to form a single water tight case or casing to receive and support movable devices of various types, said movable devices, and means to actuate said de. vices. substantially as described.

In a fluid actuated mechanical toy an enclosing case (1) consisting of an inclependently constructed upper section (A) comprising a top,bottom, sides and ends and having fluid inlet and outlet ports formed in said top and bottom respectively, an independently constructed lower section (B) comprising a bottom, sides, ends and top and having fluid inlet and outlet ports formed in said top, an independently constructed intermediate section (0) comprising sides and ends only and having transparent por tions forming a part thereof said section (C) connected to be rigidly secured by a water tight connection at its top and bottom to the upper end lower sections (A and B) respectively to protect and exhibit movable devices and mechanism mounted within said section (C), said movable devices and mechanism, and means connected to actuate said movable devices and mechanism, substantially as described.

In a fluid actuated mechanical toy an enclosing case (11-) comprising three inclepende-ntly constructed sections (A B and C) having water tight connections therebe tween, an angular roof shaped cap to close the top of the uppermost (A) of said sections, a fluid inlet port opening through said roof shaped cap to permit the passage of water into said section (A), a screw threaded plug to close said inlet port, an outlet port opening through the bottom of said section (A) to conduct water to a water wheel mounted within the section (C) therebelow to turn said water wheel to actuate devices connected to be moved thereby, said water wheel and the devices it actuates, an exit port (10) opening through the top of the lower section (B) to permit flow of water from the water wheel to the chamber (12) within said lower section (B), means to close the port (10) from the backflow of water therethrough, and means to return water from the lower section (B) to and into the upper section (A), substantially as described.
I. In a fluid actuated mechanical toy an enclosing case (1) comprising three independently constructed sections (A B and C) having water tight connections therebetween, a roof shaped cap to close the top of section (A), a fluid inlet port formed through said roof shaped cap, a plug to close said inlet port, an outlet port opening through the bottom of said section (A) to conduct water to a water wheel mounted to turn within the section (C) therebelow, said Water wheel, devices to be actuated by said water wheel, transparent portions inserted in the sides and ends of said section (C) to disclose the movement of said water wheel and its actuated devices within the section (C), a port to discharge water from the section (0) to the section (B) therebelow, a valve hinged within the section (B) and connected to close the water discharge port (10) when the case (1) is turned in other than a predetermined direction, and a conduit to return water from the lower section (B) to the upper section (A), substantially as described.
In a fluid actuated mechanical toy an enclosing case comprising three independently constructed sections (A B and l) having water tight connections thcrcbetween, an angular root shaped cap to close the top of the uppermost (A) of said sections, transparent portions inserted in the sides and ends of the intermediate (C) oi said sections to disclose a water wheel and actuated devices therewithin, said water wheel and the devices actuated thereby, means comprising conduits to conduct water to and from said water wheel to energize the same, and a base con'iprising flanges projecting from the section (B) to ensure a stable base for the toy, substantially as de scribed.
6. In a fluid actuated mechanical toy and enclosing case (1) comprising three independently constructed sections (A B and C) having water tight connections therebetween, :1 cap to close the top of the upper most (A) of said sections, a fluid inlet port opening through said cap, a plug to close said inlet port, a fluid exit port formed through the bottom of the section (A) to conduct water to and upon a water wheel mounted within the section (C) thcrebelow to actuate said wheel and the devices it actuates, said water wheel and the devices actuated thereby, a fluid exit port opening through the top of the lower section (B) to conduct water from the water wheel to and within said lower section, and a conduit comprising a slightly tapering tube (16) secured by a water tight connection to the top of said lower section (B) and extending thence to and tightly fitting into the lower end of a slightly tapering tube (17) which opens through and is secured by a water tight connection to the bottom of the upper section (A) and extends thence nearly to the top of said section, substantially as described.
