UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER H. MILLER, OF RICHMONI),'VIRGINIA;
BAFFLE sno'rron son nor-WATER HEATERS.
Application filed April 22, 1924. Serial No. 708,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I-I. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, leSldlIlg at the combustion chamber into the flue, preventing the waste of heat, by providing a bafile, adapted to cut oil the direct passage 01 combustion gases to the flue, and cause them to take a more circuitous path, in order that a maximum amount of heat may be transmitted to the water or other medium to be heated in the heater structure.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a battle attachment for Arcola hot water heaters of special construction, adapted to be supported by the cross members of the section of the heater, for restricting the passage to the flue, in order that the combustion gases will pass to the forward portion of the heater, and through the spaces between the cross members at the forward portions, to the flue passage in the top portion of the heater section, and finally to the flue, in order that a maximum amount of heat will eflect and heat the sections of the heater, for heating the water.
In the drawing, forming-a part of this application Figure 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view, through an Arcola type of hot water heater, showing the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3, is a horizontal sectional view, taken on the line 3--3 or" Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view, of one of the battle forming elements.
The well known type of Arcola heater now used in the art, includes a plurality of heater forming sections, indicated at 1, which form intermediate sections, there being a specially constructed front section, and rear section, the rear section being indicated at. 2, and provided with a flue at the upper end thereof, as at 3, for the reception of the usual flue pipe, connected with a chimney. The central or intermediate sections 1 of the heater are substantially rectangular in form, and cast in hollow inter-fitting sections, as
' illustrated. Each section is provided slightly below the top portion, with a cross member 4:, which is cast hollow and integral with the main portion of the section, in order to provide for a water receiving space. In assemble-d relation, the cross members a, combine to form a flue passage, which may be indicated, at 5, in the upper portion of the heater, which communicates with the flue opening 3, in the rear section 2. It will be further noted that each of the sections 1 are provided with integral inwardly extending flanges, such as indicated at 6, which, in assembled relation, are spaced from each other, in order to provide a large heating surface,
within the combustion chamber of the heater.
The present invention is adapted to provide a battle for limiting the passages between the cross arms 4 to the flue passage 5, by providing a baflie, indicated generally at 7 which includes the provision of a plurality of segmental bafile plates 8. Each batfie plate includes a plate section 9, provided on the bottom with a depending projection 10, and at one end with a lateral projection 11, of a width equal to the width of the projection 10, which is equal to the space between the cross arms 4 of the heater sections. One end and a side of the plate portion 9, are slightly inclined inwardly and downwardly, as indicated at 12, for a purpose which will presently appear.
A pair of these plates 8 are mounted in aligned abutting relation between sections 1, of the heater, in a manner clearly illustrated in Figures 1 to. 3, the projections 11 from one end of each plate projecting:
into the space between the flanges 6 of each of the intermediate heater sections. The ends of the plate sections 9 of each bafile plate abut in the central portion of the heater, while the side edges of said plate 'sections, abut the side edges of the adjacent plate sections, mounted in the next adjoining space between the heater sections, in order to cooperate and form a'baffie 1n the rear section of the heater, to prevent the combustion gases from passing upwardly and directly into the flue, without heating. the upper portion of the heater section, at the forward end thereof. The provision of this baffle section, Will cause the combustion gases to first pass upwardly, in the heater, and then forwardly to the spaces between the cross members 4 at the forward portion of the heater, and then Subsequently through the flue passage 5, in the top portion of the heater, to the flue pipe. This will cause the heat to circulate for a longer time within the heater, in order that a greater heating of the Water in the sections thereof, will result for obtaining the maximum benefit of the heat of the fire in the heater.
It will therefore be apparent that a novel form of baffle has been provided for hot Water heaters of the Well known type, adapted to prevent the direct passage of the gases to the flue, in order that full benefits from the heat will be obtained.
thickness equal to the combined thickness 01 said plate and rib, the free end of said extension being bevelled and notched upon its under side.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
WALTER H. MILLER.
