IMPROVEMENT IN STRlPPlNG, PEELING, AND SPLlTTlN-G APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,073, dated November 24. 1874; a plication filed August 31, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOL KUH, of J efi'erson, iii the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Stripping, Peeling, and Splitting Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a front view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig.3 is a top view. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views.
This invention has relation to means for stripping leaves, bark, and other appendages from stalks, brush-wood, and other like material, for the purpose of preparing the same to be bound in the form of a flat web, to be used for covering floors, and for other purposes.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a grooved guide-apron and an anti-friction roller, in combination with the strippers, as will be hereinafter explained.
The following description of my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a rectangular frame of wood or metal, and of any suitable capacity, which frame is supported firmly in a vertical position. B B designate two metal plates, which are held in the same plane in frame A by the vertical ends thereof, and also by means of intermediate guidingstrips a. The adjacent edges of the plates B B are held together by means of helical springs b in slotted tubes 0, which tubes are located near the corners of the strippingplates. 0 O are holes, which are formed by making semicircular scores in the meeting edges of the plates B B, which holes are of different diameters, adapted for stalks of different sizes.
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that on one side of the plates burr edges e surround the holes 0, which will easily strip the leaves from the stalks or the twigs, and, if desired, the bark from branches. edges 0, one or more of the larger holes 0 may be provided with cutting or stripping tubes 6, formed of two half-tubes suitably secured to the plates B.
In addition to the stripping-plates I employ an inclined table, D, which is inclined, as shown, and sustained by means of hooks or their equivalents. The surface of the inclined table D is corrugated, and the grooves or channels thereof are in line with the holes 0, and form passages for guiding the stalks or other material to the several holes. At the upper end of the table D is an anti-friction roller, G, the object of which is to reduce friction on the material While drawing it through the holes G and stripping it.
It will be seen, from the above description, that the springs b will allow the plates B to yield and accommodate themselves to the stalks and other material while stripping the same.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a modification of the stripping-tubes e, and consists in combining therewith an internal tube, 6, and radial blades, f. By thus subdividing the tubes, stalks and other material drawn through them may be divided into any number of strips at the same time that the leaves, twigs, and bark are removed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The inclined and grooved or corrugated table D, provided with a roller, G, and combined with stripping-plates B B, substantially as described.
