Application filed November 7, 1925. Serial No. 67,623.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. Moore MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guthrie, in the county of Logan and State of Oklahoma, have invented a-certain new and useful Invention in Shooting Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings.
%his invention relates to a safety device for use in banks, for the purpose of preventing hold-up performances by bank-robbers, and is intended as a bankers friend.
The object of the invention is to provide means of instantly shooting an offender,
electrically, in any suitable manner, for instance, by a suitable switching mechanism, which may be controlled, either at'the cashiers desk, or in the bank vault 'by a special operator.
Various objects of the invention will ap pear from reading the following specification, in connection with the drawing, appended, and forming a part of the specification, the claims especially defining the invention per se.
On the sheet of drawings, accompanying and forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the structure, with missile 0r shell in place, and showing the contacts, together with the wire leads, interposed with a switch, leading off to the source of power, which, if desired,
may be a battery, or a storage battery, or'
36 other electric energy.
Figure 2 is a front view of the device closed, and shown to be ornamental and designful. Y I I Flgllle 3 is'a side view.
In the several views similar characters of reference will indicate similar parts.
In describing the invention, a shelf will be indicated by 1, and is provided with a V supporting bracket 2, and a..wall-ba'ck 3, and this shelf 1 is provided with two shell holders 4 and 5 to receive -a shell 6, with its .nose'7 pointing away from the rear of the ;shell, and through an opening 8 in the front ornamental part 9 of ahousing 10 that covers the shell, shell-rack or holder and the ignition parts for igniting the shell and which will now be explained. The shell holding part 5 is braced .as at 11 and I2, to absorb the kick or back 'impact when the shell is set ofi.
Just to the rear of the holder 5 are a pair of binding posts 13 and 14, to receive the bare ends 15 of insulated wires 16 and 17, leading off in any suitable way and place for instance in a vault, Where the proper electric energy may be supplied from battery or otherwise. The line 17 is interposed by a switch 18 for throwing the current on for making a spark at the gap between the two points 15. A
The shell is of the ignitable type and is provided with a fuse that melts with the spark, and discharges the shell-head 7 from theshell proper: and through the opening 8.
The device is to be set in any suitable place with reference to the window of the paying teller, and so as properly and safely,
to. project the shell to the mark-which, of course, would be the hold up intruder, probably standing in front of the wicket.
While the device is primarily intended for a wall position and also therefore, for ornamentation it is also possible, and it may be desirable to place the device underneath the teller counter with ornamental opening through the same, to permit shell projection from under the said counter, after shell discharge.
Of course there will be obvious ways of operating this device in defence of the teller in front of the hold-up dastard, and.
this in no wise has any particular bearing on the invention, sufiice it to be the invention in the arrangement of the device as expressed.
It will now be clearly seen that there is provided an efficient device for preventing effective hold-ups in banks and other places, for catching the dastard, and for doing so quickly and efficiently.
With reference to the contents of the shell, this shell may, 'of course be of-any character, and for the-purpose of this invention is designed to include one composed of sulphur, mustard and lead, with, of course,
-the proper efiicient in addition for explo- SlOIl.
Having thus set forth the invention, I claim:
1. A device having a sup ort, a pair of shell supports carried there a shell carried in the supports, a fusible'cap' for the shell, a pair of binding posts, naked 'Wires passing through the binding posts and in Proximity to each to form a gap, electric ines leading from the binding posts, and a switch in one of the lines, the shell dischar 'ng at the instance of flashing of the spur atthe said gap.
2. Same as claim 1, addingzsaid shell containing sulphur, mustard and lead.
Signed at Guthrie, in the county of L0- gan, and State of Oklahoma, this 3rd day of November, in the year of our Lord, nine teen hundred and twenty-five.
FRANCIS E. MOORMAN
