UNITED STATES 1,570,690 PATENT" OFFICE- STANLEY McOIiATCHIE, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, 'ASSIGNOR TO BENJAMIN ELECTRIC MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.-
ATTACHMENT PLUG.
. Application filed July 3, 1920. Serial No. 393,973.
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY MOCLATCHIE, a citizen of the United States, residing .at Cambridge, in the county'of Middle'sex and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachment Plugs, of which the following is a full,'-clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
forming apart of this specification.
My invention relates to electrical connector devices and more specifically to swivel attachment plugs.
One of the objects of my inventionis to provide a swivel attachment plugv which will be durable and eflicient in use, simple'in construction and cheap to manufacture.
Further objects will appear from the detailed description to follow and from the appended claims.
In the drawings in which an embodiment of my invention is shown;
Fig. l'is' an axial section of an attachment P Fig. 2 is a section on the line22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3is a'plan'view of the plug with the cap removed, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. y
The construction shown in the drawings comprising in a general Way, anattachment plug having shell and center contacts 10 and 11 respectively, wiring terminals 12 and 13 for said contacts respectively, a two-part insulating base or body 14, for supporting the contacts and wiring terminals in proper position and providing the proper insulation, and a thumbpiece or handle 15 for screwing the threaded shell contact into the socket, and for housing the wiring terminals 12 and 13. The threaded shell contact 10 is swiveled with respect to the wiring terminals 12 and 13, so that the cords connected with the wiring terminals 12 and 13 will not be twisted when the threaded shell contact is screwed into the socket.
For wiring the plug, provision is made whereby the inside part of the two-part insulating base '14.- may be removed from the entering end of the threaded shell contact 10, so that the handle 15 and threaded shell contact can he slipped over the ends of the wires, and the wires connected with the wiring terminals 12 and 13, and the two-part insulating'base then assembled with-respect; to the shell contact 10. I
Referring now more in detail to the construction, the two-part insulating body 14 is held against endwise movement with respect to the threaded shell contact-10 bymeans of a forked contact device, having contact fingers 16 and 17, which straddle the inwardly-extending annular flangeportion 18 of the threaded shellcontact; The
two-part body 14 is centered-with respect to the shell contact 10 when the parts are in assembled position by the inwardly-ex tending circular boss 19 on the outside base part (Figs. 1 and 2) which engages the in ner edge of the inwardly-extending annular flange 18.
To "get the inside base part 20 out of the threaded shell contact for wiring, the center contact screw 21' is unscrewed to disconnect the outside base part or cap 22 from the base part 20, andwhen this cap isremoved, the base part 20 can be shifted laterally enough to disengage the contactfingers 16 and 17 from the inwardly-extendingannular flange 18. y
The center'contact screw'21 is screwed into the base portion 23 of a sheetmetalstamp ing, sa1d sheet metal 'stamping'comprising' in addition a conducting strap portion 24 extending. through a passage'ini the base part 20, and Tterminatingin a binding plate portion into which the binding screw 25 of the wiring terminal 13 is threaded. This binding screw 25 not only serves to bind thewires, but also serves to hold the stamping from which the binding plate is formed in position in the base part 20 by the engagement of the side of its head with the insulating base. In a similar manner the stamping 26 which comprises the contact fingers 16 from the threaded shell contact and engaging a corresponding recess in the handle.
. in connection with the description of the construction. Briefly, to wire the plug, the center contact screw 21 is unscrewed to disconnect the base parts 20 and 22, the inner base part 20 is shifted laterally to disengage the tongue 17 from the flange 18, the base part 20 is then slipped out from the threaded shell contact, the threaded shell contact with the handle 15 is then slipped over the ends of the cords and the ends of the cords are secured by the binding screws 25 and 27. The base part 20 is then drawn back into the threaded shell contact and slipped over laterally to cause the fingers 17 and 16 to straddle the flange of the threaded shell contact, the outer base part or cap 22 is then put in position, the boss 19 engaging the flange 18 to center the base, and the center screw 21 is screwed in place to hold the two base parts 20 and 22 together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A swivel attachment plug comprising a threaded shell contact having an inwardly-extending flange, a center contact, a twopart insulating base for supporting said contacts with respect to each other, one of said base parts being located substantially inside said threaded shell contact and the other substantially outside, means for providing a swivel connection between said base and shell contact comprising a pair of contact members straddling said flange and mounted on one of said base parts, said one of said base parts being laterally movable with respect to said flange in assembling to cause said contact members to straddle said flange, and means whereby said contact members are prevented from disengagement from the flange by connecting the two parts of the base.
2. A swivel attachment plug comprising a threaded shell contact having an inwardlyeXtending flange, a center contact, a twopart insulating base for supporting and insulating said contacts with respect to each other, one of said base parts being substantially inside said threaded shell contact, and the other base part being substantially outside said threaded shell contact, and means for providing a swivel connection between said base and threaded shell contact comprising a pair of contact members carried by one of said base parts and straddling said flange, said one of said base parts being laterally movable with respect to said flange in assembling to cause said contact members to straddle said flange, the other base part being provided with means for engaging said flange to center the base when the parts are connected.
3. A swivel attachment plug comprising a threaded shell contact, having an inwardly-extending annular flan e, an insulating base having a longitudinally extending hole therethrough, and an integral sheet metal member comprising a binding plate portion, a conducting portion extending through said hole, and a pair of contact members straddling said flange and having a sliding engagement therewith.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name.
STANLEY McoLAroHIE.
