Description

B. IZZO SIDEWALK MAT ruled Jan. 12. 1925 v INVENTOR A'r'roRNsY l Patented Jan. 19, 1926. i
PATENT j OFFICE.A
BoNAvEN'rURo Izzo, or BRONX, `NEW YORK.
SIDEWALK MAT.
Application filled.` January To all (whom 'it may concern.'
`Be it known that I, BoNAvENTURo Izzo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Bronx, .in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sidewalk Mats, of which the following is aspecification. y This invention relates to mats particularly adapted to be utilized in the capacity of a mat to be arranged on the sidewalk in front of a building or any suitable place in the path of pedestrians and its primary object is to provide a mat that can be kept free from foreign matter such as mud and dirt as well as ice and snow.
Another object is to provide a mat having its upper surface suitably elevated and supported in such a manner whereby foreign matter that accumulates therebelow can be adequately acted upon by a cleaning medium.
A further object is to provide a mat that can be expeditiously cleaned and kept free from foreign matter with very little effort and one that can be inexpensive to manufacture yet durable to withstand much abuse.
A still further object is to provide a door mat which is substantially constructed from a single strip of metal cut and bent in the desired shape and being provided with securing means for retaining such shape.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sevn eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing the application of the mat which forms the subject matter of the present invention in applied position before a doorway.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of a portion of the mat per se to illustrate its construction.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line i 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawings in detail the letter A indicates the door way in front of which is a mat of the type forming the pres- 12, 1925. Serial No. 1,984.
tially form a frame which includes longi tudinal strips 2 and transverse strips 3 crossing the strips 2 at equi-distantly spaced intervals. While the drawings show themat in front of a door way, it will of course be understood that the mat can be constructed in a size to cover the entire sidewalk in front of a building without departing from the spirit of the invention.
y The longitudinal strips 2 are formed by bending portions of the metal together in a manner to form supporting legs 4 and these portions are secured in such bent position through the instrumentality of rivets 5, semicircular recesses 6 being formed in the portions for a purpose to be presently described.
The transverse strips 3 are flat to provide a comfortable walking surface and are formed by a plurality of short strips 7 each having their ends formed integral with the portions which provide the longitudinal strips and legs 4.
One of the end longitudinal strips which form a portion of the frame has cut therefrom at each end thereof a tongue 8 which is rounded upon itself to receive a pipe 9 having openings l0 formed therein at intervals and preferably at a point midway between the side walls of the recesses 6, the recesses 6 being arranged to register so that cleaning fluid such as hot or cold water conveyed to the pipe 9 can be sprayed through the openings 10 in such a manner to have free passage through the mat for the purpose of washing away accumulated foreign matter associated therewith or arranged therebelow. If ice or snow should be associated with the mat the cleaning fluid would readily melt the same.
One end of the pipe 9 is provided with a i suitable cap means to prevent cleaning fluid from escaping therefrom as will be readily apparent. The opposite end of the pipe has extending therefrom a flexible conduit 11 which is secured to a pipe l2 having connection with a suitable fluid supply. A valve 13 is fixed to the pipe adjacent the juncture with the conduit 11 whereby the supply of fluid to the mat may be controlled.
From the above it will be vreadily a parent that the mat which forms the su ject matter of the present invention is constructed from metal and thereby a substantial structure has been provided which Will stand mueh abuse. The metal is preferably in the forln of b ass or like material so as to overcome destruction by rust, however, it may be constructed of some galvanized metal for the same purpose.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the seope oi the appended claims.
lvhat I claim is:
1. A mat of the character described comprising parallel longitudinal strips each standingr on one of its longitudinal edges with the other longitudinal edge thereof lying in the plane of the mat surface, said strips being formed With recesses in their lower edges in a manner to provide supporting legs, and flat transverse strips having their ends formed integral with the longitudinal strips at their u pper portions to provide a flat surface.
:2. A mat constructed from a single sheet of metal comprising parallel longitudinal strips each standing on one of its longitudinal edges with the other longitudinal edge thereof lying in the plane of the mat surface, said longitudinal strips being provided with semi-eircular recesses in their lower edges to forni supportiiu,r legs, flat transverse strips having their ends lornnal integral with the .longitudinal strips and connecting said longitudinal strips at their upper edges to provide a flat upper surface and a Apertorated pipe secured to one longitudinal strip with the Warforations of said pipe disposed between the legs and in line with the recesses whereby thc mat eau he flushed through the recesies.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
