METHOD OF FEEDING STEAM BOILERS FROM AN UNHEATED TANK.
Application filed November 25, 1924:. Serial No. 752,272.
T 0 all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, HANS GLEICHMANN and VVALDEMAR STENDER, citizens of the German Empire, residing at Siemensstadt, near Berlin, Germany, and Berlin-Charlottenburg, Germany, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Method of Feeding Steam Boilers from an Unheated Tank, specification.
Our invention relates to an improved method of feeding steam boilers from an unheated tank.
It is known to feed steam boilers in such a manner that the feed water contained in an unheated tank or receptacle, is put under the boiler pressure so that it flows into the boiler if the tank is located higher than the boiler. i
It is, however, not always possible and frequently also too expensive to dispose the tank at a higher level than the boiler, so that it is not possible to let the water fiow into the boiler by gravity by putting it under boiler pressure. In this case. steam or? higher pressure than the pressure of the boiler steam is according to our invention admitted into the space above the water of an unheated tank in order to force the feed water into the boiler. The system is of particular importance in cases where highly heated water, particularly such far above 100 C. is to be fed into the boiler because the continuous flow of hot water is easily interrupted when being pumped by means of mechanical pumps owing to the generation of steam. It is known to feed water from a boiler of higher pressure into a boiler of lower pressure. This method, however, has the disadvantage that too much heat is withdrawn from the boiler of higher pressure. Furthermore, it is known to raise the pressure of the steam from the boiler to be fed to a higher pressure by means of a small auxiliary boiler and to use this higher pressure steam to feed water from a container into the main boiler. This arrangeof which the followingis a putting our improved method into effect, by
way of example.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is a tank or container for the feed water from which the water flows through a valve 2 into a tank or container 3 which is at first closed at the bottom. by the valve 4. When the tank 3 is full the valve 2 is closed and the valve 5 in the steam pipe and'the valve 4 are opened. Now steam from the boiler to be fed is brought to a higher pressure by means of a compressor 6 and forced into the tank 3 at the top whereby the feed water is forced into the boiler S by the pipe 7. When the tank 3 is empty the valves 4 and 5 are closed and the valve 2 opened again. The cycle may then be repeated. 9 is an air vessel.
The control of the valves 2, 4i and 5 does not form part of our invention.
Just when the feed water is very hot the apparatus for carrying out our improved process may be employed with special advantage because then the difference in the temperature between the compressed steam and the water in the receptacle 3 as well as the difference over the temperature of the walls of this tank is only very small. so that only a very small condensation ofthe steam under higher pressure takes place. For the supply of a definite volume of water approximately only the equal steam volume becomes necessary and the compressor can be made very small. i
above the Water in said tank and in forcing the feed water from said tank into the boiler by the inereesed tank pressure.
In testimony whereof we eflix our signatures.
HANS GLEIUHMAN N lVALDEMAR STENDER.
