ATTACHMENT FOR CORN PI CKERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I'IENRY MAoNEss, a citizen of the United States, residingat Colton, in the county of Minnehaha and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Corn Pickers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. i. This invention relates to an attachment for corn pickers and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character whereby the gathered ears areeffectively maintained in desired posi tion with respect to the husking rolls and wherein means are provlded for throwing outnubbins at the front of the husking to which it is applied.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved attachment for corn pickers whereby certain important advantages are at tained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating an attachment constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention in ap plied position;

Figure 4 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of one of the beater McCormick corn picker of a type employed in connection with the standing stalks and operates 111 connection with the husking rolls R upon which the gathered earsyare delivered. i The rolls R are of a conventional type and driven in a well: known manner and .at opposite sides of said rolls R are the side boards 1 of requisite dimensions. Rotatably supported above and slightly to u the rear of the rolls R is a fan F embodying four equi-distantly spaced blades 2. The fan F at each of its ends is providedwitha trunnion 3 rotatably engaged within a bearinga mounted upon theupper edge of a side board 1. To the upper portion of each of the side boards 1 at the forward end thereof is bolted or otherwise secured a block or casting 5 having its forward end portion bifurcated. Snugly engaging within the kerf 6 of said bifurcated end portion is a shank! carried by a bearing 8, said bearing being positioned in advance of the sideboard 1. y
The bearings 8 provide mountings for the crank shaft S, said crank shaft being in driven connectionrthrough the medium of the gears ,9 and 10 with the beater shaft 11. The beater shaft has each end portion rotatably supported by a bearing 12 bolted or otherwise secured to the upper portions of the side boards 1. The gear 9 is fixed to the shaft S while the gear 10 is fixed to the shaft 11, said gears 9 and 10 being of desired ratio. The shaft 11 has its 0pposite end portions in driven connection as by the sprocket chain 14 with a desired driven shaft of the picker proper.
Mounted upon the shaft 11 are the beater wheels or discs 15each of which being positioned above but in relatively close proximity to the bight between adjacent rolls R.
The intermediate or central portion of the shaft 11 is angular, preferably square in cross section, and each of the wheels or discs 15 is provided with a similarly formed central opening whereby the wheel or disc 15 when mounted upon the shaft 11 may be keyed for rotation therewith. Each of the discs-or wheels 15 is held to the shaft 11 by the brackets 16 bolted both to the wheel or disc 15 and shaft 11.
At redetermined points spaced circumferentially around the wheel or disc 15' are the equi-distantly spaced picker hooks 17 ex;
tending a predetermined distance beyond the periphery of the wheel or also and to an extent sullicient during a working operation of the rolls R to throw or jerk out nubbins at the front end portion of the rolls R.
The shaft S is provided with a plurality of angularly related cranks 1:3 with each of which is operatively engrag 'ed an endportion of a pit-man 19 the opposite end portion of which being secured to an end portion of a propeller blade 20. .ii propeller blade 20 is positioned directly above each of the rolls R and extends reinwvardly and longitudinally thereoi to a point in relatively close proximity to the rear end of the roll and the lower marginal portion oi the propeller blade 20 is provided therealong with a plurality of longitudinally spaced and forwardly inclined depending. tingers 21.
Adjacent its rear end each oi the blades 20 has pivotally connected therewith, as at 22, the lower end portion of an upstanding propeller arm 23, said arm extending through the openings 25 provided in the vertically spaced cross members or boards 25. The opposite end portions of the cross members or boards are bolted or otherwise secured to the properly spaced cross bars 26 comprised in the supporting ll10111- bers or braces 97 bolted or otherwise secured to the upper edges of the side boards 1.
Each of the arms 23 at a point between the cross members or boards 25 is provided with a series of longitudinally spaced openings 528 through which is adapted to be selectively disposed a pin. 29 herein shown as of a cotter type. This pin 29 serves as a stop or abutment for the lower end po tion of an expansible spring 30 surrounding the arm 23 with its upper end portion bearing against a washer 31 mounted upon the arm 23 and in direct contact with the under surface of the upper cross member or board 25. This spring serves to constantly urge the arm 23 and its blade 20 downwardly aid the tension or such spring may be renulated or adjusted by changing the position of the pin 29.
The arm 23 above the upper cross member or. board is surrounded by a second e";- pansible spring;- 352 interposed between the washer 33 and a cotter pin or the like lilselectively disposed through the longitmlinally spaced openings 35 provided in the upper portion of the arm The washer surrounds the arm andis in direct contact from above with the upper cross memher or board 25. By varying the tension of theupper spring 32 by shifting the position of the pin 34, the tension of the lower spring 30 may be lurther regulated.

In combination with a set of husking rolls, a propelling blade positioned above each of the rolls, means for oscillating the blade, a cross member positioned above the rolls, an upstanding arm pivotally connected with each of the blades and freely disposed through the cross member, said arm below the cross member being provided with an abutment, an expansible spring surrounding the arm and interposed between the abutment and the cross member for urging the arm and blade downwardly, a second abutment carried by the arm above the cross member, and an expansible spring surrounding the upper portion of the arm and interposed between the second. abutment and the cross member, said second abutment being adjustable lengthwise of the arm.

In combination with a set of husking rolls, a propelling blade positioned above each of the rolls, means for oscillating the blade, a cross member positioned above the rolls, an upstanding arm pivotally con nected with each of the blades and freely disposed through the cross member, said arm below the cross member being provided with an abutment, and an expansible spring surrounding the arm and interposed between the abutment and the cross member for urging the arm and blade downwardly, said abutment being adjustable lengthwise of the arm.
