Description

L. M. TAYLOR VALVE OPERATING TOOL Filed Sept. 14, 1925 Patented Jan. 12, 1 926. .i UNITED STATES I v 1,569,644- PATENT OFFICE.
LYNN M. TAYLOR, or an ons,- ILLI oIs, nssleNon To-s'rANnARD OIL ooMrANY, or WRITI G, INDIANA, AND cnIcAGo, ILLINOIS, 'A conPonA'rIoN' or INDIANA.
To all whom it may concern; Be' it known that I, LYNN M. TAYLOR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Valve-Operating Tools, of.
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a tool which I have more. particularly devised for use! in operating valves in positions not readily .accessible for hand-operation and especially such valves as are commonly provided on .the'crank-eases of motor-vehicle engines'for the lubricant-draining purpose.
Having devised my tool for the especial use referred to, the following description thereof is confined to that connection.
I In the accompanying drawing-'- Figurg 1 is a broken viewin side elevation showing the tool applied to a closed pet-cock, such as is provided on the crankcase of a motor-vehicle engine;
Figure 2 is a similar, enlarged view of the same, with the operating rod broken off, showing the tool applied to the pet-cock in its closed-position.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view oi the show-' ing as regarded flgm the left-hand end of Fig. 1, and
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view 0% the tool with the operating rod broken 0 My primary object is to render the tool conveniently applicable to and releasable from the valve. when rotated to closed posithe hollow head or socket to extend in I-ela-- tively opposite directions. Thus, with the pet-cock-closed (that shown being of ordinary construction), when the expanded or thumb-piece end 8 of the valve-stem extends at right-angles between the discharge- 'VALVE'OPERATI1\TG Too 3 Application filed September 14, .1925. Serial No. 56,230.
nipple 9 and the inlet-nipple 9 onrelatively-opposite sides of the 8 of the valve-stem, whereby the hooks embrace the casing 9 between the nip le s. By
lobular valvecasing 9, the socket .6 may, e directed by- 'the handle 5 to envelop and engage the end turning the handle 5 and with it t e socket to rotate the valve into open position for emptying the crank-case, the hooks are brought to extend .in relatively opposite directions over the nipples 9 and 9 and thus obstruct withdrawalof the tooluntil it is turned to hause thesocket to closethe valve against leakage far enough to bring .thehooks to their first-named position of embracing the valve-casing, whereby 'the tool becomes released for withdrawal.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an inexpensivezi 'eflicient tool for the purpose set forth an one which is portable and which can be conveniently carried from one car 'to another in the operation of draining lubricant from the crank-cases of such cars and the replen ishing of the same with freshlubricant.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction thus shown and described, and I do not intend to limit my invention thereto except as pointed out in the appended claims, by which it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as permissible by the state .of the art.
I claim:
1. A portablevalve-operating tool comprising a socket-forming head provided with a handle and having hooks projecting 'in relatively opposite directions from diagonally-opposite parts of said head.
2. A portable valve-operating tool comprising a rectangular socket on one end of a handle-forming rod. and having hooks projecting in relatively opposite dlrections from diagonally-opposite end-portions of the socket-sides. l
3. A portable. valve-operating prising a socket on one end forming rod and having rigid claw-like tool como a handlehooks projecting in-relatlvely opposite directions from diagonally-opposite parts of .the socket-walls.
the operatingmember of a valve, and means.
carried by said head of such form as to permit of the renioval of the tool from the ing'adapted to take over the operating mem- I valve only when the valve is in Closed ber of a'valve, and said hooks bemg so position, v disposed relative to said operatingmember 5. A valve-operating tool vcomprising a as to permit the removal of the socket from I socket-forming head provided with a. ham said member only when the valve is in dle and having-hooks projectin in rela closed position. tively opposite directionsfrom agonallyopposite parts ofsaid head, said socket be- M. TAYLOR.
