Description

Jan. 12 1926.
e. F. BOES TILE MAKING MACHINE Filed Feb. 13. 1924 Patented Jan. 12. 1926.
UNITED stares enonen FRANCIS BOES, or-tA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
Tina-MAKING MACIiiivE.
Application filed rebriia'i 13, 1924. Serial No. 692,487.
To all 'w/wm it may 010m i I Be it known that I, Gnoizen FRANcI's Boss, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the countyof Tippecanoe and State of Indiana. have invented a certain new and uselul Improvement in Tiled hilt ing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exist description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
My invention relates to machinery for making tiles-,building blocks and thelike.
One ofthe objects of the invention is to provide a simple and practical apparatus of the class specified. c
Another object'of the invention is to -'provide a construction which is particularly advantageous forthe making of building tiles or blocks having certain features, of construction particularly adapting them for drainage purposes. I v
Another object of the invention is to secure'the foregoing and other desirable results in a simple and expeditious. manner.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. l is a vertical section of a tile or block machine or apparatus embodying my invention;
Fig, 2 is a horizontal section-of the same taken on line 22 in Fig. l; V
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of of the apparatus;
Fig. 4 is a view of the tile or block made by the machine;
Fig. 5 is a view of a detail 01 construe tion; and v Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view similar to Fig. l of a modified form'of machine.
Referring to the drawings, the apparatus shown comprises a base 1 and a form 2 rest ing thereon, together with side walls 3 and 4. andend walls 5,,and 6, which walls rise from the base 1. The form 2 is shown by itself in Fig. 3, and is preferably made in the form of a semi-cylindrical shell, as shown in said Fig. 3, with small end flanges G 4? to hold said form firmly in place. Said form is also preferably provided with downwardly extending flanges or projections 7-7 which are adapted to fit into recesses 01' apertures S--8 in a plate 9 which rests on the base 1, said members 77 serv ing to hold the form 2 against lateral or sidewise movement. The form 2 is also preferably provided with an upwardly extending projection 10 made with inclined a portion side and end walls 11 and 12, respectively, the purpose of this projection 10 being pointed out hereinafter.
-The end walls 5 6 are preferably held in position by being hinged at theii lowei' edges on pivot rods 13-13, so that they may be swung up and down to close and open the mold or chamber in which the block or tile is to be formed, Handl es l el- 1elkeep the end walls or doors 5 and 6 in u m'ardposition to maintain the mold closed. Inner wall meinbers" or linings 1616 are secured, as by bolts 16 l6 to the walls or doors 5 and 6, and thesemeinbers 1616 are provided with apertures 16 -16 to accommodate the ends ot form 2,
A vertically movable or reciprocating piston 17 is provided with plungers l8- 18 arranged to move up anddown above the form 2 but said plungers do not move quite far enough to cont-act with form 2, as shown in Fig.1. 7 I
The apparatus thus described will form a block having certain drainage features, which block is shown in cross section in Fig. 4 and is shown and described and claimed in my application for United States Letters Patent Serial No. 587,169, filed January 19, 1924. Said block involves sidewalls l919 forming between them a horizontally extending recess 20 which forms a drainage duct or passage by which water may be drained horizontally by means of said tile and a plurality of such tiles arranged end to end, Said block also has a transverse wall 21 above the drainage duct 20, which transverse wall forms a shelf to catch mortar talL ing down from above, and so protects the drainage duct 20 from being clogged or filled by mortar or other matter, The shelf 21 is divided horizontally so as to form an intermediate space, as shown in Fig. 1., and this space forms a vertical or top opening into the drainage duct 20, by which water or other liquid may drain down into the drain age duct while mortar and other solid matter is caught by shelf 21.
Referring now to my apparatus, it will be seen that the form 2 forms a recess or drainage duct 20 and the projection 10 forms an opening or space communicating with the top of the drainage duct to afford water or liquid inlet into, the same. It will also be seen that the side walls 19 are formed by the plungers 18-18 and the side and end Walls 3, 4:, 5 and 6 previously described.
ill-us by filling a proper amount out cement or concrete or other matter into the apparatus and then lowering the piston 17 so as to lower the plungers 18, the drainage block previously described will be formed with its bottom, horizontal drainage passage, its shelf for mortar and the like, and its opening from above into the drainage passage so as to permit liquid to flow into the same.
In Fig. 6 I show a modified form of 21p paratus in which there are three plungers 18", 18 18 and a form 2' having projections 10, whereby there is formed a drainage block or tile with two top openings into the drainage passage.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention,
What I claim is;
1. A machine of the class specified, comprising means for forming a block or tile with a laterally extending drainage passage and means for forming a shelf for collection of mortar or other solid matter to prevent same having access to the drainage passage, and also for forming an aperture or open mg into said drainage passage.
2. An apparatus of the class specified, comprising means for forming a laterally extending drainage passage and means for forming a top or cover to said passage which top or cover forms a shelf for mortar or the like, and also means for forming an aperture through said top or cover to provide a liquid inlet into said drainage passage.
An apparatus of the class specified, comprising means for forming a closed space "for a tile or block and an arched form at the bottom of said space for forming a drainage passage in said. tile or block, said form being provided with an upwardly extending projection to form an aperture into the duct or passage formed by said arched form, and plungers for forming cavities above said form, which cavities communicate with said aperture formed by the projection on said form.
t. An apparatus of the class specified, comprising a base, side and end walls, and an arched shell mounted on said base and adapted to form a drainage passage in the block or tile formed by said side and end walls, said shell having an upwardly extending projection adapted to form an (JP-(Elk ing into the drainage passage formed by said shell, and plungers arranged above said form and adapted to provide spaces in the block or tile which communicate with the opening formed by said projection on said shell.
5. An apparatus of the class specified, comprising a base, side and end walls, and an arched shell mounted on said base and adapted to form a drainage passage in the block or tile formed by said side and end walls, said shell having an upwardly extending projection adapted to form an opening into the drainage passage formed by said shell, plungers arranged above said form and adapted to provide spaces in the block or tile which communicate with the opening formed by said projection on said shell, and means on said shell for holding the same in position.
6. An apparatus of the class specified, comprising a base, side and end walls, and an arched shell mounted on said base and adapted to form a drainage passage in the block or tile formed by said side and end walls, said shell having an upwardly extending projection adapted to form an opening into the drainage passage formed by said shell, plungers arranged above said form and adapted to provide spaces in the block or tile which communicate with the opening formed by said projection on said shell, and means on said shell for holding the same in position, said means comprising laterally extending flanges 6 and downwardly extending projections 7. I
7. An apparatus of the class specified, comprising a base, an arched shell mounted on the base, side and end walls at the sides and ends respectively of said form, said end walls being provided with apertures to accommodate the ends of the form, said form being provided with an upwardly extending projection rising from its upper portion and a piston having plungers adapted to make contact with said projection on said form.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this seventh day of February, A.
GEORGE FRANCIS BOES.
