CONCRETE-MOLDING MACHINE.
Application filed May 1, 1925. Serial No. 27,191.
To all whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that we, ARTHUR WHITE and JACOB J. Morin, citizens of the United States, and residents of Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboygan and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Concrete-Molding Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Concrete molding machines.
Concrete molding machines as now ordi narily used are adapted to manufacture one or two blocks at a time, and as comparatively considerable time is required before the concrete will set and harden to permit removal from the mold, the blocks cannot be manufactured very expeditiously, and therefore the cost is materially increased.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to overcome the before mentioned objectionable features and provide a concrete molding machine with which comparatively a large number of blocks may be made at the same time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a concrete molding machine in which the forms may be removed from the blocks withoutfdisturbing the blocks as soon as the concrete has set to permit more rapid hardening of the blocks.
A further object of the invention is to provide a concrete molding machine in which all of the block cores may be easily ylocked to a frame to permit raising all of the cores with the forms at the same time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a concrete molding machine in which the core lifting frame may be raised provide a concrete molding machine having molding sections which may be placed one above the other in spaced relation to form tiers of molding sections and which sections may be easily removedone at a time to permit easy removal of the completed blocks from the machine'. j
A further object of the invention is to provide a concrete molding machine in which. several tiers of blocks may be molded in the machine at the same time.
A further object of the invention is to provide a concrete molding machine which is of simple construction, is strong and durable, and is well adapted for the purpose described. Y i
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the improved concrete molding' machine and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof. i
In the accompanying drawings in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig.- 1 is a side view of the improved concrete molding machine, parts broken away and other parts being shown in section;
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, parts broken away andl other parts being shown in section;
Fig. lis a detail view of the frame shown on a larger scale;
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail View of the side portion of the frame and F'g. 6 is a detail side view of a portion of the frame and the machine.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 8 indicates a lower rectangular frame member which is preferably provided with transverse axles 9 upon which are journaled wheels 10 to permit the machine to be easily moved into a curing room or other means to expedite the setting' of the blocks. Said lower rectangular frame member or section comprises channeled side and end members 11 and 12 and a bottom member 13 all bolted together to form a rigid construction. The corner portions of the frame member have upright members or supports 14 removably resting thereon which form legs of a second rectangular frame 15 positioned thereabove in spaced relation. Uprightmembers 14 extend removably upwardly from the corner portions ot the second frame member and form legs of a third frame,
section or member '15 also mounted in spaced relation' thereon. rlhe rectangular frames and their legs form removable independent sections adapted to be placed one above the other during the molding operation, and `in order to firmly hold the sections together the lower end portions 14 of the legs 14 tit into the corner portions of the frame below and the shoulders 141` of said legs rest upon said frame.y Said trame members are all ot' the same size and shape and each one is V:provided with a vbottom portion 13 similar to the bottom portion 13 before mentioned. rl`he frame members, legs and bottom portions thus `far mentioned aire 'connected together to form each section into a 'rigid structure. Each frame section is provided with a block mold frame member 17 which is divided by partitions t 18 and 19 to form the shaped block desired.
inthe present instance, the mold member is adapted to i'orm angular or T-shaped blocks which in use intertit each other. The pan titions 18, including the sidewalls, extend longitudinally ot' the trame and their op-` posite end port-ions are bolted to the end members 20 forming the opposite ends of the vmold member while thetransverse members 19 are interpoed Abetween the side 'and longitudinal members and are welded, 'riveted `or fastened thereto in any manner desired,
The lower edge portions of the longitudinalpartitions are arranged to tit into grooved portions 13 of the bottom portions 13 to form a tight joint, and if desired the corner edges of` said joints may berounded to form rounded edges on the blocks, as indicated inl Fig. 2. Fig. 5 shows 'one form of Yconnecbion in which the transverse members 19 are provided with tongues 19 wh-ich Iextend through perforations 18 formed in the side and longitudinal members. The ends o'tfuthe tongues may be riveted, if desired. The side members of the 'frame member 17 n snug-ly `.tit within the side members 11 ofthe rectangular trame 8, and the corner portions fot" the Yend members :2O arer provided witflrvertiea-lly extending threaded openings 2l vtor receiving elevating vscrews 22 journaledin the corner .portions of the rectan-v arranged to receive a. crankedy handle 30 for manually turn'inj'g 'the 'shafts to elevate the form frame 17, as illustrated in part in'Fig. 1. 1n turning the shafts, the toi-m trarneca'n beelevatedn su'icient distance to clear the partly set concrete blocks so lthat moisture laden air or steam canecirculate more freely around the blocks during the curing operation.
Concrete blocks are -usually of vho`llow'construction, and to maintain the core 1members 31, necessary zin forming the hollow con-y stii'ictiion, in posit-ion, the ybottom 'portion' 13 oft the rectangular trame i's pro-vided with upstandin'g pins 32 vwhich enter holes '33 in 'the core members 31. `Said 'core members are termed with central under cut ope`nings 34 tor receiving Tel-raped looking ment bers 235, so that when the T-shaped members 35 are turned a one-quarter turn, the lower or -e-rossfportion 35 of said members will'extend beneath theV shoulders 31k vof "the under out openings and lock ythe lcorre `Emelnl'iers to' said T-shaped members. A clore trame 236 mounted `on top of the mold trame member 117 is formed in pai-tof ltransverse trame members 36 fthrough which the 4stem portions 'oi' the T-shaped `members extend and are journaled Slotted arms 37 secured to the upper 'ends ot -the Vstem portions are adapted tol be finoi'fed aqua-iter turn hv reciprocal lbars S8 having upstanding pins 39 w-liich'extend through the slots ot' lsaid arms. As `thus constructed, all of the cores may be locked lto the core frame and the upward movement of the mold frame will alsoe'levate the core members to clear the partly set concrete blocks. Said core `members 31 are tapered downwardly, as 'clearly shown in Fig. 2, to permit easy withdrawal 'of the core rmembers from the core openings fof the blocks. The frame Imembers `or vvsections 15 and 16 arezprovicled with molds, cores and trames simi-lar 'to l'the section 8, and 4said parts are used in saidupfper sections in ex"- actly the same manner 'as similar parts are used' inthe lower section 8.
-lnuse the 'two upper sections together with the core traine 'of *the lower section are removed and' 'the' concrete in liquid form 'iis pouredinto 'the yforms until they are illed. "lhe'core frame of the lower sec'- tionfis then-placed in p'osition'on said lower frame and the Isecond section ris then 'placed in position'above the 'first section but minus its core `frame. The molds tot the second section faire then; lfilled withthe 'concrete and' when lled the core frame is placed thereon' and the thirdk section minus its 'core frame is'then placed on fthe second trame and the moldsl arel likewisel 'filled with 'conc-rete -and' the core Jramelis 'then placed'fi'nlpositionlon said upper frame. Tliemachime may 'now be rolled into a steam curing room t'oieX- pedite the 'curing 1of thefbloc'ks Now, as
soon as the concrete has set sufficiently-tok hold its shape, the arms ofthe core frames are turned to lock the core members thereto and the shafts are turned to cause the'screvvs to raise and separate the molds andthe core members from the partly set blocks, and due to the fact that the blocks are all spaced apart, the operation is further expedited. The separation of the blocks also permits the application of moisture to all sides of the blocks. When the blocks are in condition to be removed from the machine the upper cores and molds are first removed, and the blocks can then be easily removed from the rectangular frame or the entire upper frame can be removed With the blocks thereon, and the blocks then can be removed from said frame. rlhe blocks from the remaining sections are removed in the same manner. After removal from the machine, the blocks may be further cured as desired.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the concrete molding machine is of very simple construction, and a large number of blocks may be molded at one time.
