Be it known that I, NEWTON K. BOWMAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Bowdil, inthe county of Stark and State 01 Ohio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mining-Machine Chain Links and Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved mining machine chain link and tooth and seeks, as one of its principal objects, to provide a construction wherein grabbing of the tooth, in the practical operation of the device, will be minimized.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction, wherein the working end of the tooth will be supported in a plane passing midway between the pivot eyes of the link so that individual rocking motion of the link with respect to the normal plane of travel thereof will impart a minlmum travel to the working end of the tooth.
And the invention has as a still further object to provide a tooth which will be doubleended and which may be readily reversed end for end.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.

The usual mining machine chain link as .now constructed is formed to so mount the tooth thereof that the working end of the tooth is disposed over one end of the link. The point of impact of the tooth isthus disposed far forward from a centerline between the two pivot pins securing the link in the mining'machine chain. As a 'consequence, when the working end of the tooth strikes a hard substance in the operation of cutting, the increased resistance causes the tooth is thus caused to gouge into the work,
placing an abnormal strain upon the bit point and all of the other machinery as well as causing the chain to move with a jerky motion. The present invention, therefore, seeks to overcome these various disadvantages. Y
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, I employ a link 10 provided at its ends with eyes 11 to accommodate the usual pivot pins 12 for securing the link in a mining machine chain. At its rear end, the link is providedwith an overhanging forwardly directed lug or abutment 13 and formed in the link in advance of said lug is a recess 14, the forward end wall of which is cut away at its outer margin, as indicated at 15. The lug is, as shown in Figure 2, provided with an inner V-shaped inclined face and entering through the lug into the bottom of the recess ltat its rear endis an opening 16. The recess 14 freely receives a wedge 17, the forward end wall, of said recess being cut away, as previously noted,
at 15,- so that the wedge may be readily removed, and threaded through said end wall to coact with the forward end of the wedge is ,a set screw 18. The rear edge of the wedge is, as best shown in Figure 3,inclined to conform to the inclination of the inner face of the lug 13 of the link and is provided with a V-shaped face 19 stepped to define-an intermediate convex shoulder 20.
Clamped between the wedge 17 and the lug 13 of the link is a cutting tooth 21 of hardened wear resistin material. The cutting tooth is straight rom end to end and is substantially V-shaped in cross section to fit the seat 19 of the wedge 17 lying flat thereagainst as well as to also seat flat against the V-shaped inner face of the lug 13. At its terminals, the tooth is beveled to provide cutting points so that the tooth end thereof, are cut away to provide a pair of diverging concave shoulders 22. These pairs of shoulders are, as shown in Figure 0 1, adapted to selectively seat flat against the convex shoulder 20 of the wedge 17 for supporting the tooth against inward movement so that when the set screw 18 is adjusted for advancing the wedge 17 to clamp the tooth between the wedge and the lug 13 of the link, the tooth will be rigidly and firmly supported upon the link. However, as will be appreciated, the tooth may be readily removed when desired and when one end of the tooth becomes worn,. the tooth may be turned end for end.
Attention is now directed to the fact that the lug 13 of the link extends well forwardly toward the transverse center line of the link while the working end of the tooth touches said center line and is thus disposed in a plane passing midway between the pivot pins 12. Accordingly, when the working end of the tooth, in the process of cutting, strikes a hard substance and the link rocks rearwardly, a minimum of outward travel away from the normal plane of movement of the link will be imparted to the working end of the tooth. In fact, the outward travel of the working end of the tooth will be inappreciable so that the tooth will be prevented from gouging into the work, while undue stress and jerky motion of the chain as usually experienced, will be eliminated. As will be perceived, when the working end of the cutting tooth is disposed in a plane near one end of the link, as in conventional mining machine chains, the working end of the tooth will, when the link rocks rearwardly, travel in a wide arc about the rear pivot pin of the link. On the other hand,
the working end of the tooth in the present construction, being disposed midway between the pivot pins of the link, will, when the link rocks rearwardly, travel in a much lesser arc. In fact, the travel of the working end of the tooth, in the present construction, will be negligible so that no tendency of the tooth to gouge is present.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a mining machine, a pivoted chain link, a cutting tooth inclined forwardly upon the link at an angle to the longitudinal axis thereof, and means extending beneath the inner end face of the tooth sustaining the tooth against inwardthrust and clamping the tooth in a position normally having its working end touching a plane passing substantially midway between the pivot points of the link at a right angle to said axis.
2. In a minin machine, the combination of a pivoted chain link, a cutting tooth, and means movable upon the link in a plane at an angle to the tooth for clamping the tooth upon the link and abutting the inner end face of the tooth to sustain end thrust thereon. a 3. The combination with a pivoted mining machine chain link, of a cutting tooth thereon, and clamping means abutting the inner end face of the tooth blocking inward movement of the tooth and rigidly clamping the tooth in position between the link and said means.
4. The combination with a pivoted mining machine chain link, of a cutting tooth thereon, and a combined stop and clamping means movable upon the link in a plane at an angle to the tooth securing the tooth and abutting the inner end face thereof rigidly supporting the toothagainst inward movement.
5. In a mining machine, a pivoted chain link, a cutting tooth thereon, and a wedge clamping said tooth and abutting the inner end face of the tooth limiting the tooth against inward movement.
6. In a mining machine, a pivoted chain link, a cutting tooth thereon, and a wedge clamping the tooth and provided with a shoulder abutting the inner end of the tooth to sustain inward end thrust upon the tooth.
7. In a mining machine, a chain link having a tooth seat, a tooth resting at one side upon said-seat, and a wedge coacting with the opposite side of the tooth clamping the tooth between the wedge and seat and provided with a shoulder seating the inner end face of the tooth limiting the tooth against inward movement.
8. In a mining machine, a chain link having a V-Shaped tooth seat, a V-shaped tooth resting at one side in said seat, and a wedge having a V-shaped face to fit the tooth coacting therewith at its opposite side clamping the tooth between the wedge and seat and provided with a shoulder abutting the inner end face of the tooth sustaining the tooth at its inner end.
9. In a mining machine, a chain link provided with a tooth seat, a tooth resting at one side in said seat and provided at its inner end with a concave shoulder, and a wedge coacting with the tooth at its opposite side and provided with a convex shoulder coacting with said first mentioned shoulder supporting the tooth at its inner end.
10. In a mining machine, a chain link provided with a tooth seat, a wedge provided with a shoulder, and a double-ended tooth selectively engageable end for end between the wedge and seat to abut said shoulder clamped by the wedge.
11.
