Be it known that I, NICHOLAS a citizen of the United States, 'residin Plainfield, in the-county of-Union and of New Jersey, and useful Improvements in Ad'usting and Clamping Gibs, of which the ollowing is a specification.
tate This invention relates to and par- .ticularly to a-novel combined adjusting and clamping gib. In planers and like machine tools, wherein a tool saddle is slidably mounted on a supporting guideway, the saddle should be so mounted on the guideway that looseness and chatterthe'reof in operation is prevented. In ordinary practice, the saddle is fitted as accurately as, possible to its guideway by adjusting gibs. However, the positive preventing o looseness and chatter can only be accomplished by firmly1 clamping the saddleto its guideway. T e primary object of my invention is the provision of ing and clamping gib to accurately adjust guideway and to clamp the thereto. Y
It will be understood that in planing operations, the tool supporting saddle must given a feeding movement on the cross rail after each cutting operation. The saddle therefore must necessarily be unclamped to perform such feeding movement and, to assure perfect rigidity, should be clamped thereafter prior to t e cutting o eration.
In the accompanying drawing, have illustrated means for so operatingthe clamping gib mentioned above. This means is spec cally shown and described in a colication to Randolph. et al.

In the drawing, 1 indicates a pair of planer uprights on which a cross rail 2 is adjustably .mounted. The uprights are provided with inwardly projecting integral portions 3 secured together by bolts4. The forward faces of these portions 3 are fin ished oil at 5 to receive the cooperating face of a rearwardl extending portion 6 ofthe cross rail, suc portion 6 also preferably being integral with the rail. portions 3 extend intoT-slots 8 in the cross rail whereby the cross rail and uprights Bolts 7 in the can bev securely clamped together at 5. The
intermediate portion of the cross rail over the table is therefore rigidly backed up by the two uprights in a manner to securely 'hold the sameagainst vibration during the cutting operations. This construction comprises the subject matter of Patent No. 1,519,332 granted December 16, 1924.
A saddle .9 is slidably mounted on the rail 2 and supports a tool slide 10 vertically gib 11 is adapted to accurately adjust the slide 10 in its guideway and a clamping gib 12 is provided for rigidly clamping the slide therein. This mechanism and its operation are fully described in the above mention a plication, Serial No. 675,203. The saddl e can likewise be accurately adjusted on the rail guideway and rigidly clamped thereto by means of my novel combined ad usting and clamping gib now to be specifically described. 1
My novel combined adjusting and clamptwo gib elements 13 and element 13 preferably being slotted at 14 therein. The
portion of amp p9 14, the 15 to receive the element element 13 is the ad ustm tion thereof. These elements, assembled as shown in Fig. 3, are adapted to be inserted between the top guideway surface 16 of the cross rail 2 and the adjacent inclined bottom surface 17 of the saddle. The element 13 has a laterally projecting end 18 through which extends a screw 19 threaded into the saddle. By rotating the nuts 20 on this screw, the element 13 can be adjusted in the usual manner to accurately fit the saddle to the rail guideway.
The clamping gib element 14 has a notch 21 therein into which extends an arm 22 of a bell crank pivoted on the saddle at 23. The other arm 24 of the bell crank carries a pin 25 which engages in an inclined groove 26 in the forward face of a block 27, A shaft 28 anchored against axial movement in a bearing 29 on the saddle is screw threaded into the block. The shaft is splined for axial sliding movement within a driving sleeve 30. This connection between the sleeve and shaft permits adjustment of the saddle on the rail. It will be noted that as the sleeve 30 is rotated in one direction or the other, the block 27 will be moved along the threaded shaft 28 and slide the element 14 into and out of its saddle clamping position. The means for operating the sleeve in timed relation to the feeding of ithe saddle is fully disclosed in the above mentioned application Serial No. 675,203.
It will be noted that my novel combined adjusting and clamping gib is made in two arts and each part performs its function independently of the other part. Furthermore, the two parts, as shown in Fig. 3, are so constructed that combined they provide a gib of the usual configuration. It is believed that the construction and operation of my invention together with the advan tages secured thereby will be readily appreciated without further description.
What I claim is:
1. A combined adjusting and clamping gib comprising two adjacent taper elements for cooperating with two relatively movable members, one of the elements being movable for relatively adjusting the two members, and the other element being movable to clamp and unclamp the two members.
2. A combined adjusting and clamping gib comprising two adjacent equi-tapered elements for cooperating with cooperating guideway surfaces of two relatively movable members, one of the elements being movable for adjusting the two members and the other element being movable to clamp the two members.
3. A. combined adjusting and clamping gib comprising two adjacent taper elements for cooperating with two relatively movable members, one of the elements being recessed and receiving the other element therein, and the elements having means whereby one can be moved for relatively adjusting the tWo members and the other can be moved to clamp and unclamp the two members.
4:. A combined adjusting and clamping gib comprising two adjacent taper elements for cooperating with two relatively movable members, one of the elements being housed within a through slot out in the other ele ment and one element being movable for relatively adjusting the two members and the other element being movable to clamp and unclamp the two members. I
5. A combined adjusting and clamping gib comprising two adjacent taper elements for cooperating with two relatively movable members, one element having a laterally extending projection whereby the same can be adjusted longitudinally for adjusting purposes and the other element being slidably mounted in a through slot in the said one element and having means whereby the same can be moved longitudinally therein for clamping purposes.
