WILLIAM IITTERREITER, kOF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
GAUGE COCK.
Application led November 22, 1924. Serial No. 751,626.
To all 'who-mj it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MITTER- nnirnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee` have invented a new and useful Gauge Cock, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to a gauge cock, adapted to be used for controlling the discharge of steam or other fluid.
The object of the invention is to provide a' devicefor the purpose stated, which is simple in its construction, quick acting and easily operated, and which is so constructed that the interior is readily accessible for the pur ose of cleaning the same.
,1 the advantages thereof will be more particuf larly described in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the invention in its preferred form.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a perspective view 'of the valve actuating rod.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the gauge cock embodying my invention comprises a stem 6, havinga threaded end 7 adapted to be screwed into a threaded hole tapped into a steam boiler, or other receptacle from which The stem 6 is formed with a central passageway 8, and is vformed at its outer end with an enlarged portion 9, having a transverse cylindrical bore 1() adapted to be arranged vertically, and to form a valve chamber. Adjacent the enlarged portion 10, the stem 1s formed with a polygonal portion 11, to which a Wrench may be applied for attaching the gauge cock to the boiler or other receptacle.
A ni ple 12,- preferably of brass, forms a steam tight lit inthe lower part of the bore 10, beneath the outlet of the passageway 8, and has .a restricted central bore 13, the upper end of which is enlarged to form a conlcal valve seat 14, which is adapted to receive a s herical ball valve A15. The upper end of the bore 10 is closed by allanged lie structural details of the'inventionand fluid is to be discharged.
plug 16, having a pair of opposed ears 17 proJecting from its upper end, transversely of which is secured a pin or bolt 18. A handle 19 is pivotally mounted on the pin or bolt 18, and has a laterally projecting arm 20, A which terminates in a vfork 21, adapted to Y straddle the reduced portion 22, formed near the upper end of a vertically disposed valve operating rod 23. This rod has its lower end bent laterally, as at 24, and terminating 1n an upturned end 25, which is adapted to extend upwardly in the bore 13 and, when the rod is raised, to engage the ball valve 15 and raise the same,l as indicated by dotted lines in Figure 1, permitting the steam or other fluid to be discharged. A vertical bore 26 is formed in the outer portion of the gauge cock for receiving the vertical portion of the `rod 23, and its upper end is closed by a glad 27, through which the upper end of the rod projects. A slot 28 exv tends laterally from the lower end of the bore 26, and a similar slot 29 is formed in the side of the nipple 12 for receiving the" horizontal portion 24 of the valve operating rod, and permitting the vertical movement thereof. A nozzle 31 forms the outlet for the gauge cock, and has a threaded connection with the lower end of the nipple 12. It is` provided with a horizontal Harige 32, which may be welded or otherwise secured to the lower end of the enlarged portion 9 of the stem, so as to close the lower edge of the slot 28, and to form a seat which limitsv the downward movement of the rod 23.
In the operation of the gauge cock, whenever it is desired to open the valve, the handle 19 is moved toward the dotted line position shown in Figure 1, thereby raising the rod 23, and the upturned end 25 thereof engages the lowermost part of the ball valve 15 and opens the same. U on release of the handle 19, the ball will ro to its'seat 14 by ravity, and will be eld firmly thereon y pressure. In order to clean the gauge cock, it is only necessar to remove the pin or bolt 18 and the hand e 19, whereupon the plu"r 16 maybe unscrewed, and the interior of the gauge cock may be easilyV vided at its upper end with a iiange 33, which is preferably brazed or soldered to the wall of the bore 10, so as to prevent any possibility of leakage. It will thus be seen that the invention is very simple in construction, and there is very little to get `out of order. It may be manufactured at a `moderate cost, and may be used with either l the salient features of the mventlon, or
sacrificing any of its advantages. It is my desire, therefore, to include all such modifications within the scope of the appended claims. i
What is claimed is:
1. In a gauge cock, the combination of a valve chamber provided with an inlet and an outlet passageway, a valve in said chamber normally closing the outlet, the wall of said valve chamber having a bore substantially parallel to the outlet passageway with a slot connecting thebore to said passageway, a valve operating rod mounted for reciprocation in said bore with its inner end portion turned laterally and extending through said n bore and terminating in' a return bent end engageable underneath the valve, means operatively connected to the outer end of the rod to actuate the same to open the valve, and a packing gland surrounding said A `rod at the outer end of the bore to prevent leakage.
engaging sald seat, a valve operating rod `reciprocably mounted in said smaller bore and having its lower end portion extending through said slot and terminating in an upturned end beneath the valve, and means associated with the upper end of said rod for raising the same to open the valve.
`3. In a gauge cock, the combination of a housing having a vertical bore forming a va-lve chamber, an outlet nipple secured in the lower part of said bore and formed with a valve seat, said housing having a smaller vertical bore at one side of the valve chamber, and a slot connecting said smaller bore with the outlet through the nipple, a valve normally engagin said seat, a valve operating rod reciprocab y mounted in said smaller bore and having its lower end portion extending through said slot and terminating in an upturned end beneath the valve, a removable plug forming the upper wall of the valve cham er, and a handle pivotally mounted y011 the plug and having a laterally extending arm operatively connected to the upper end of the rod so as to raise the same to open the valve.
In testimony, that'I claim the foregoing as ture.
