SWITCH ATTACHMENT.
Application filed May 27, 1922. Serial No. 564,152.
To all wizom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELMER JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at arren, in the county of Cochise and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch prittachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for switches of the flush type.
An important object of this invention is to provide an attachment for flush type switches by means of which the switch may be operated from either side of the wall with equal facility and convenience.
A further object is to provide an attachment of the character specified having simple means whereby the same may be adjusted to correspond to the thickness of the wall within which the switch is embedded.
A further object is to provide an attachment for switches which is neat in appearance, durable in use, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a switch applied, the attachment being shown partly in section.
Figure 2 is a plan View illustrating the attachment and a portion of the switch.
Figure 3 is a perspective of the attachment disconnected.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a wall of any desired type and the opposite sides of the wall may be provided with plaster 6 or any other suitable wall finish.
The switch 8 is of the flush type and is embedded in the wall and may be secured in position by means of fastening devices 9 such as screws. The body of the switch or the casing may be provided with an attaching plate 10 through which the fastening devices 9 are extended.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the switch 8 which is embedded in the wall is provided with the movable switch members 12 which are operated by the depression of the off and on buttons. As is customary in switches of this type, the off and on but tons operate against the tension of coil springs until they pass a certain point when they remain in their operative position.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application is capable of a variety of mechanical expressions and by way of illustration I have shown pairs of overlapped rods 14 and 16 connected by means of connecting bolts 16 having nuts 18 threaded thereon. As illustrated in Figure 3,the rods 14 and 16 are formed with spaced openings 19 which receive the bolts 16 whereby an adjustable connection is provided between the rods of each pair.
One rod of each pair is provided with an attaching plate 20 which may be secured to the movable members of the switch as is customary. The attaching plates of which there are two, are offset as indicated at 21 and are soldered or otherwise secured to one rod of each pair whereby the rods are connected to the movable members of the switch.
In carrying out the invention the ends of the rods 14 and 16 are provided with cylindrical buttons 26 which are engaged by the lingers of the operator.
The pairs of rods 14 and 16 may be extended through insulating tubes 30 which pass partly through the wall and terminate at a cover plate 31. Of course the cover plate 31 is provided with spaced openings to slidably receive the buttons 26. I v
In applying the improved attachment, the switch is first embedded in the wall and one pair of buttons 26 is so located that it is possible to operate the switch from one side of the wall. The rods 14 and 16 are now so adjusted that the other pair of buttons extend out through the other side of the wall thereby permitting the switch to be operated from both sides of the wall with equal facility. The tubes 30 are of a non-conducting material and consequently prevent a short circuit and possibly a fire at the switch. The tubes also may be cut to the desired length to correspond to the thickness of the wall.
With reference to the foregoing, it will be seen that the attachment provides a simple means whereby a switch may be safely operated from either side of the wall so that it will not be necessary to go from one room to the other when it is desired to operate the switch.

'It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.
I claim 1. A wall switch structure comprising a switch member pivotally mounted in the wall at a point between the opposite side surfaces thereof, rods having overlapping sections adjustably connected together and movable in the wall, the said rods being located one at each side of the switch member and one section of each rod having a, plate adapted to engage the switclimember.
2. A wall switch structure comprising a switch member pivotally mounted in the wall at a point between the opposite side surfaces thereof, rods having overlapping sections providedwith openings adapted to register with each other, a securing bolt passing through the registering openings, said rods being located one at each side of the switch member, plates carried by the rods and adapted to engage the switch member, and push buttons carried at the outer ends of the rods and adapted to extend beyond the surfaces of the wall.
