Be it known that I, AMBRosE Cnnivnn, a citizenv of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in fork Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in work cabinets, and consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.l

An object of the invention is to provide a cabinet of simplified construction which affords facilitiesy when in open position for supporting in conveniently and easily accessible positions all the necessary articles of equipment and supplies required by a hair dresseror beauty culturi'st to enable her to perform the duties incident to. her occupation without discomfort tol either the customer or the worker. A further object of' the invention is to provide a device of the character described which when in closed positiOIi hasthe appearance 0f an article of' furniture, being adapted by its construction to have any desirable finish and general design to match other articles of furniture as desired.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which-may be constructed in such manner as to be eitherportable or stationary as desired.

'A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of the` character described ywhich includes comfortable Seats for the support of both the customer and the worker while thev worker serves. the Cus tornei', whereby the worker may perform her work conveniently and easily withv but relatively little fatigue. l

respectively, and, the opening .13 normally is closed by a swinging door 16.1 The space between the partition 8 and the side 2 is closed at its upper end by a. section' 17 of the top of the cab-inet case. The section 17 is A swingable section 18, which together with the section 17, constitutes the top, of the cabinet case, is hinged at 1 9 to the fixed section 18 and: is swingable from the position shown in Figure 3 to the position shown in Vfired in place in any suitable known manner. f

The compartment- 9 is closed at its front by a door 20 which together with the fixed front wall l0 constitutes the front of the cabinet case. The door 2O may be held in open position as shown in Figure 3 by a removable shelf or work-supporting member 2l which is provided with pins 22 extending laterally from one face thereo-f, certain of the pins engaging vertical openings 28 in the upper end of the door 2O while the remaining pins 22 engage with vertical openings 24 in the upper end of the side l, whereby the shelf or work-supporting member 21 is held against displacement from the side l and door 2O and the door 20 alsoy is releasably held against movement from open position.

A panel 25 is mounted at its lower end. as at 26, upon the bottom of the compartment 9 to swing about a horizontal axis from inactive position, as shown in Figure 2, to active position, as shown in Figure 3. It will be observed that the panel 25 is provided on the face thereof which is lowermost when the panel is in active position with spaced apart bars or supports 2G which cooperate with a portion of the bottom wall of the compartment to support the panel 25 substantially in a horizontal position and in a plane parallel with the bottom 3 when the panel 25 has been swung outwardly and downwardly to active position. When the panel 25 is in inactive position it is substantially vertically disposed and both the panel and supporting members 27 are vcompletely housed within the compartment 9.

A seat 28 is carried by the panel 25 and is positioned above the panel when the latter is in outwardly swung or active position and inwardly within the compartment 9 from the panel 25 when the latter is in substantially vertical position. The seat 28 may be supported upon the panel 25 in any suitable manner, preferably through the agency of a standard 29 which is adjustable as to length and comprises a lower or socket section 29n and an .upper screw section 29b which is mounted to turn in the bore of the socket member 291. The standard 29 has a flanged or laterally enlarged base portion 29c which is in sliding engagement with and retained by a dove-tailed mortise 30 in a block 3l which is attached to the panel 25, the mortise 30 constituting a guide slot along which the standard 29 may be moved bodily to adjust the position of the seat 28 upon the. panel 25 to vary the distance Within the limits set by the length of the slot between the seat 28 and the space within the compartment 9` A substantially horizontal supporting plate-like member 32 is disposed within the compartment 9 adjacent to but spaced from the upper end of the latter, the supporting member 32 preferably being of sufficient width to be secured at its side edges to the side l and the partition 8, respectively, and of sufficient length to be secured at its rear edge to the back 4 and to terminate at its front edge in a plane located at an appreciable distance from the plane of the front edges of the side l and partition 8, whereby a space is provided between the front edge of the supporting member 32 and the door 20 for the accommodation of the panel 25 when the latter is in inactive position and the door 20 is closed. The supporting member 32 constitutes a combined shelf and seat as will presently appear. This supporting member also serves to support a mirror 38 which may be lowered through a slot la in the rear part of the plate 32 to hang suspended from the plate 32 as shown in Figure 2, being prevented from moving completely through the slot 34 by a lateral projection 35 at the upper end of the mirror. A pair of swinging retaining arms 36 are pivoted at their upper ends to the mirror at opposite sides of the latter, as at 37, and terminate at their lower ends below the plane of the lower end of the mirror, being provided at their lower ends with laterally turned portions 38 which are adapted to engage with the lower face of the plate 32 when the mirror has been raised to prevent the mirror from being removed bodily from the plate 32 from the position shown in Fig. il. In the last-named position the mirror 82% rests at its lower end uponthe upper face of the plate 32 and is tilted to contact at its back with the vertically extending upper end portion of the back of the cabinet case.

From the foregoing description of the space is accessible when the door 16 has been opened. A towel rack 39 may be secured to the inner face of the door 20. lVhen the door 2O has been opened, the panel 25 may be swung outwardly to the position shown in Figure 3. As stated, the seat 28 preferably is supported on the panel 25 by a mounting of the swivel and vertically adjustable type of construction. The seat 28 is adjusted initially if desired so that the customer seated thereon may bend over the supporting member 32. A removable basin (not shown) may be placed upon the shelf 252 for holding the cleansing liquid in which the hair of the customer is washed. For example, the mirror 33 may be housed within the Space provided within the com- ]Liartment 9 above the supporting member 32. Also a basin such as that indicated at 50 in Figure 6 may be a fixed part of the supporting member 32 and may be provided with a drain pipe 51 which may lead to any desirable place. For example, if the device is stationary, the drain pipe 51 may lead to the waste pipe of the usual water supply system.

In the form of the device illustrated in Figure 7 the horizontal supporting plate 32 is formed with a relatively large opening therein in which is received a basin 6() having an outwardly extendingr flange at its upper end overlying the portion of the plate 32 which margins the opening therein. A cover 61 forthe basin is shown as being a plate hinged at its rearward edge at 6,2 to the supporting plate 32. The cover 6l may be swung upwardly and rearwardly to the inclined position shown in Figure l0 in which it rests against the extending upper end portion of the back 4. A mirror 63 may be secured to the cover 6l against the face thereof which is lowermost when the cover is in downwardly swung position7 the mirror being secured to the cover in any suitable known manner, as for instance, by the retaining strips 64.

The block 3l in which the base of the seat-carrying standard 29 slides may be secured to a horizontal base or supporting plate G5 in superimposed relation tor the latter. The base 65 is adapted to be slid in its plane until completely disposed withinthe compartment 9 as shown by the full lines in Fig. 7 or until extended. from the. compartment Slat the front of the cabinet as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 7. The slidable movement .ofthe base 65 which preferably slides upon the bottom 3 is limited through the agency ofi laterally extendingl pins V66- at the. side edges of the base 65working in slots 67 in guiding yand retaining bars 68 which are Securedwithin the compartment9 at opposite sides of the base 65. 9),.but it is' thought that the construction which includes a pair vof bars 68 and two of thek pins (respectively*disposed at opposite sides of the base 65 will be understood. Pins V6.9i driven vthrough each bar 68v and throughv the horizontal'slot, 67Y may have the dual 'function of securing the bars 68 [to the bottom 3 and of providing stops vfor engaging with oneV of the pins 66 vto limit thel slidable movement of the base 65.

The base 65 islprovided with a laterally elongated supporting leg 70 which is hinged thereto `by a three-piece or triple leaf hinge,

such as'that indicated at 71, so that the leg may swing downwardly and inwardly from the full line position shown in Figure 7 when the base is in extended position to the dotted line position of Figure 7. In the latter named position, the leg 7 Ofis in abutting relation at its upper end to the underface of the base 65 adjacent to the outer end of the latter, while in the full line po sition, the leg 70 lies in a plane of the base 65 and may be retracted with the latter within the compartment 9. The supporting leg 70 may be provided with end section, such as that indicated at 73 in Fig. 8, hinged to the supporting leg to swing about a vertical axis when the leg is in downwardly swung position to the position shown by the full lines in Fig. 8. In this position, the end section 73 serves as a brace between the supporting leg 7 0 and the base 65. f

The operation of the form of the device exhibited in Figure 10 is identical in essential respects with the operation of the device shown in Figures l and 2. When the cover 6l is in downwardly swung position,

returned tothe position indicated by they n full lines when the base 65 is slid to position within the compartment 9.

Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than those illustrated in the drawings and I, therefore, consider as my own all modificationsv and adaptations thereof which fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

1. A. device of the character described comprising a case having a compartment open at the front and at its upper end, a panel supported upon the bottom Wall of the compartment for movement to and from position within the compartment, a seat supported on said panel in position to be disposed upright, a substantially horizontal supporting member disposed in the upper part of said compartment, said supporting member constituting a combined shelf and second seat, and a swinging cover section for closing the compartment at its upper end, said cover section being adapted to be swung from position to close said compartment to horizontal position at one side of the compartment to support articles in positon conveniently accessible to a person who is seated on said second named seat.

2. A device of the character described comprising a case having a compartment open at the front and at its upper end, a

panel supported on the bottom `wall of the compartment for movement to and from position within the compartment, a seat supported on said panel in position to be disposed upright, a substantially horizontal supporting member disposed in the upper part of said compartment, said supporting member constituting a combined shelf and second seat, a swinging cover for closing the compartment at its upper end, a door for closing the compartment at the front of the latter, and a removable shelf adapted to be supported upon the door and the adjacent portion of the case, said removable shelf and said door and adjacent portion of the case having co-operative means for holding the removable shelf against displacement and for holding the door in open position, said cover being swingable from compartment-closing position to substantially horizontal position yon the base at the side of the compartment opposite to said removable shelf and to then be adapted to support articles in positions conveniently accessible to a person who is seated on said second named seat.
