`UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JNO. D. BROWNE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
APPLE-FABER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,683, dated September 9, 1856.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN D. BROWNE, of Cincinnati. in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in t-he Construction of Machines for Paring Apples and other Fruit and Vegetables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which" Figure 1 is an elevation of a machine with my improvement. Fig. 2 is also an elevation the point of view being different from Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of my improvement, Fig. 2 (y y) shows the plane of section.

The nature of my invention consists in reversing or returning the knifeto its original position after having pared the fruit, without the use of spring orA weight as will more fullyV appear from the following description. The advantages of my improvement are, the certainty of operating, the knife not being liable to be caught, or hang in the eye of the apple, avoiding concussion, working easier, by not having a spring to coil up, thus rendering it more durable and also lessening the cost ofconstruction. To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a cast iron standard which may be secured to a table or bench by a thumb screw (a) at its lower end. On the standard (A) there are two sockets or `bearings (b, c) the upper bearing (b) has a small shaft (0l) within it, to the outer end of which is attached a fork (e) and on the opposite end a pinion (f) the lower bearing (c) receives the axis of the cogged driving wheel (C) having a handle (O). On the opposite end of the axis of the driving wheel (O) is attached a pinion (h). On the standard (A) below the socket (c) is an arm (B) having two sockets or bearings (z', j,) the socket (i) receives the axis (le) of the toothed wheel (D) which gears into the pinion (71,) the socket (j) receives the axis (Z) of the guiding loop bar (E),
on the axis (lc) underside of the wheel (D) is attached a toothed segment (m) and also on the underside of the outer edge of wheel (D) is a toothed segment (n) gearing internally, on the axis (Z) of the guiding loop bar is a toothed disk (0) which the segments (m) and (n) gear alternately.
G is a stock in which a knife (p) is secured, this stock is secured to the end of a spring Q) which is formed of a wire being coiled or bent and turning freely in a socket (1^) at the bottom of standard (A) and passing through the loop in the guiding bar (E) said bar having projections (t) tosteady the spring Operation: The apple or other article to be pared is placed upon the fork (e) and the knife (p) in consequence of the spring (Q) bears against the apple at one end at the base of the fork (e). The wheel (C) is then turned by the, handle (O) and the fork and apple rotate in consequence of the pinion (c) gearing into the toothed wheel (O) and the toothed wheel (D) also rotates in consequence of t-he pinion (L) being geared into it as the wheel (D) rotates, and with it the toothed segment (m) the guiding loop bar (E) will be turned in consequence of its gearing into segment (m) and with it the knife (20) which will pass from one end of the apple to the other, traversing one half of its circumference, and paring the whole apple. When the knife reaches the outer end of the apple, the guiding loop bar (E) will be released from the toothed segment (m) and then the teeth (n) on the outer edge of wheel (D)will gear into the opposite teeth (o) of the guiding loop bar (E) and consequently return it with, the knife (p) at an increased speed to its original position, it will then be released from the teeth (n) to be again actuated by the teeth (m) for a repetition of the process.
