Description

' J. F. SEARING v PROTECTIVE MEANS F( )R HYljROCARBON MOTORS Filed April 20, 1925 INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY" Patented Jan. 5, 1926.
UNITED s-TArEs JOHN r. sEAnIne, or rmwnoormnnn, NEW .Yonx.
PROTECTIVE MEANS FOR HYDROCARBON MOTORS.
Application filed April 20, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN F. SEARING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Rochelle, in the county of estohester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Protective Means for Hydrocarbon Motors, of which the following is a specification sufiicient to enable those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to utilize the same.
My invention relates to hydro-carbon motors generally, but especially to those used on automobiles, motor trucks, and for analogous purposes; my object being to obviate all danger of the burning out or deterioration of operative bearings from lack of suitable lubrication, and to this end I utilize the oil itself in the crank case or other oil receptacle or reservoir to cause a warning when the level thereof falls below a prescribed degree of safety,-the invention consisting primarily and essentially in the control and actuation by means of a valve connected with the indicator float in the oil chamber, of an alarm sounded by the admission of air under pressure thereto, said air pressure being derived from the air tank connected in the usual manner with the carburetor of the motor, all as hereinafter fully set forth. and described and claimed specifically.
In the accompanying drawings I illustrate, more or less symbolically and diagrammatically, a practical embodiment of the essential features of my invention, although I do not restrict myself to the identical construction and arrangement of parts and ap purtenances shown-by way of exemplification, since changes may be made in minor details, and equivalent mechanical expedients resorted to, with like results, and without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect.
With this understanding Fig. 1, represents the relative positions of the operative parts when the signal valve is closed; and
Fig. 2, the same when the said valve is opened to sound the alarm.
In the said drawings C, represents the carburetor of the motor communicating with Serial No. 24,704.
the air pressure tank A, by a pipe a, as heretofore. Connected with this air pipe a, or directly with the tank A, if preferred, is a supplementary air pipe at, which communicates also with a valve chamber casing A, in which is positioned a slidable valve piston p, normally closing communication (as in Fig. 1) between the air inlet port a and the outlet port a leading to the alarm signal device a.
The slidable valve piston p, fits snugly within the casing A, and is pivotally connected by a rod p, with the pointer or indi- Gator: hand 2', of the indicator dial I, the said indicator hand i, being in turn pivotally connected through the medium of its lateral extension 2', and the link 7, with the float F, 1n the crank case K, or equivalent oil reservoir or chamber.
Figure 1 shows the parts in position when the case K is well supplied with oil. Figure 2 shows the position of the parts when the oil has fallen to a dangerous level. In the former case, Figure 1, the piston 12 is in position to' close the outlet passage through the pipe a. This is automatically controlled by the quantity vof oil in the case K.
The alarm signal device may consist 01 a whistle, buzzer, or any equivalent or suitable contrivance adapted to be sounded by air pressure; and any equivalent form or construction of valve control therefore may be substituted in lieu of that shown.
VVh1le my automatic alarm is applicable to any type of hydro-carbon motor, and to auto-cars and trucks generally, without interferen ce in any way with operation of the motor, 1t is adapted to effectually obviate all danger of overheating or burning out of bearings, etc., by reason of lack of lubrica tlon, since it will, if properly adjusted, afford ample notice of danger threatened in this respect, allowing time for rectification by replenishment of oil, without immediate hindrance of operation of the machine.
The distinctive feature of my invention being the actuation of an air pressure alarm by means of the float in the oil chamber, it is obvious that said alarm device might be connected with the exhaust of the motor in lieu of the air pressure tank with like results, so that I do not limit myself in this respect. 7
What I claim as my invention and desire 5 to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described a receptacle, a float therein controlled by the height of the fluid therein, an indicator, having a hand which is pivotally connected with 1 the float, an air pressure tank having connection with the carbureter of a motor, a oasing having direct connection wlth the connection between the earbureter and the tank,
an alarm signal in communication With said casing and a piston slidable in said casing and connected with the hand of the indicator and constructed to control the flow of: air from said casing through the signal device by reciprocation of the piston.
