OIL CUP.
Application filed May 14, 1925.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY O. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Vincent, in the county of Kittson and State 6 of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Cups, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an oil cup for bearings and is particularly designed for machinery having a continuous operation.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an oil cup, which has means incorporated therein, forv actuating a force feed of the oil, which is brought into operation by the bearing becoming heated.
Another very important object'of the invention is to provide an oil cup, which has provision for allowing a continuous dripping of oil onto a bearing and `operates a thermo-statically controlled forced oil feed, which will be brought into operation when the bearing becomes over-heated or tends to become overheated.
A Vstill further important object of the invention is to provide an oil cup of this nature, which may be easily and quickly actuated, to be brought into operation or to be placed out of operation when the machine is stopped.'
Another object of the invention is to provide an oil cup of this nature, which is exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to lmanufacture, eflicient, reliable, not
likely to become out of order, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed. f

Referring to thedrawing in detaihit will be seen that 5 designates a block having the threaded extension 6, in order that the same may be engaged in a bearing as the' ordinary oilcup. .This block is provided with. a compartment 7,' and a passage 8. A cap 9 is held over the block 5, by means of suitable fastening elements 10, and has a compartment 11 registering with the compartment?, so'as to form therewith ay mercury chamber. Ihe chamber has an upwardly extending cylindrical portion 12. A stopper 13 is also provided in the chamber, in order that the samemay be filled with the mercury. lA cylinder 14 is engaged on 'the extension 12 and` receives a-re`ceptacle 15 at its upper end. The bottom of the receptacle is indicated` by vthe numeral 16and is provided with an openingv 17, in which is disposed aL valveseat cage 18, having the openings 19. A` uide 2O is provided, on the lower end o .the valve seat cage 18. A threaded opening' 21 is provided in the side of the cylinder 14 and receives a pipe section 22. A cylindricalcasing 23 is engaged with the pipe-section 22, andthe axis thereof extends parallel with the axes of the cyl-v inder 14 and the receptacle 15. The lower portion of the casingl 23 has its interior' restricted to forml a valve seat 24. A tube, preferably of glass, isV indicated at 25, andv extends `downwardly from the coupling 26, communicating with the bottom end of the casing 23. A tube 27 communicates with the tube 25 and extends through the cap 9 and the block 5 for feeding oil to the bearing.` A needle valve 29 is provided with a shank 30, movable through thev cap 31, of the casing. A disc 32y is thread-- ably associated with a sleeve 33, on the nipple 34 of the cap 31,- and the shank`V 30 extends through the nipple 34, through they sleeve and through the disc 32, and termina-tes in a lateral extension 35, in which is pivoted a lever 36, having a cam 37 .formed thereon, for association with the disc 32. A nut 38 is threaded on the shank 30, within the casing, and a spring 39 is disposed about the shank, within the casing, impinging against the cap 31 and isa perspective view of the against the nut, and has a tendency to normally hold the needle valve 29 closed. By actuating the lever 36, to the position shown in Figure 6, the needle valve may be raised, and the distance between the valve and seat may be controlled by the adjustment of the disc 32. When the lever 36 is swung upwardly, the spring 39 will close the valve.
A level indicating tube 40 is associated with the receptacle 15. A plunger 41 is provided with a tubular shank 42, having a solid head 43 on its lower end, and a head 44 on its upper end provided with anI openingv 45, communicating with the interior of the tubular shank 42. This plunger is located with the head 43, slidable in the extension 12, and head 44, slidable in the cylinder 14. A needle valve 46 has its shank extended through the opening and into t-he interior of the shank 42. This needle valve extends into the valve cage 18. A spring 47 is disposed about the shank o1 the needle valve, between. the plunger 41 and a shoulder 48.
The cylinder 14 is filled with suitable lubricating oil, and this is accomplished by iirst filling the receptacle 15, through the removable cap 49, and the receptacle 15 is also filled, the level of the oil therein, being indicated through the level indicating tube 40. The lever 36 is then pushed down, so as to lift the needle valve 29 :trom the valve seat 24. The space between the needle valve 29 and the valve seat 24 is adjusted, by operating the adjustment disc 42, so that the oil will drip as i'ast as desired, this being capable of ascertainment, by observing thel oil dripping through the glass tube 25. While the device is thus operating in connection with the bearing, it will be seen that should the bearing become heated, the mercury in the chamber formed by compartments 7 and 11 will expand, thereby pushing upwardly on the head 43 of the plunger 41, so as t0 cause the upward movement of the head 44, which will compress the spring 47 so as to close the needle valve 46 and the continued upward movement of the head 44 will force the oil in the cylinder 14 through the bight section 42 and through the casing, through the coupling 26, through the tube 25, and through the tube 27 to the bea-ring. This will be a` force feed, and thus the bearing should soon cool to the normal temperature. In order to prevent the oil from being forced upwardly in the casing, it is preferable to provide a plunger 50 on the shank of the needle valve 29, which will operate as a piston, in the upper portion of the casing 23.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new is:
1. A lubricating device of the class described including a cylinder, a reservoir below the cylinder, a receptacle above the cylinder, a valve seat disposed between the receptacle and the cylinder, a valve associated with the seat, a plunger including a head slidable in the cylinder and a head slidable in the reservoir, a thermally expansible fluid in the reservoir, said cylinder provided with an oil outlet, a resilient connection between the plunger in the cylinder and the valve, whereby when the mae terial in the reservoir is expanded, the plunger will be moved, so as to move the head in the cylinder, so as to close the valve through the resilient connection, and force the oil from the cylinder, without interfering with the oil in the receptacle.
2. A lubricating device of the class described, including a cylinder having an outlet, a receptacle engaged in the upper end :of the cylinder, a reservoir communicating with the lower .end of the cylinder, a plunger including a tubular shank having a solid head slidable in the reservoir and a head slidable in the cylinder `and provided with an opening communicating with the interior of the shank, a` needle valve having a sha-nk extending through the head having the opening and terminating in the tubular shank, a valve seat disposed between the cylinder and the receptacle, a shoulder1 lormed on the shank of the needle valve, a spring disposed about the needle valve between the shoulder and the plunger in the cylinder, said needle valve being normally open, said reservoir adapted to contain a thermally expansible Huid, so as to raise the plunger in the reservoir when heated, thereby raising the plunger in the cylinder for compressing the spring to close theV needle valve and force the oil in the cylinder therefrom without interfering with the oil in the receptacle.
