Description

t Figure 1.
Patented Dec. '29; 1925.
-UNITED SlTAiTES HEINRICH BURCHARTZ, OF GEL SENKIBCHEN, GERMANY, ASSIG NOB TO GELSEN- monnnnn Application filed January resident of. Gelsenkirchen, Germany, have.
invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centrifugal Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates more especially to centrifugal casting machines such as that shown in German Patent No. 378,557, Ausgegeben July 20, 1923, and has for its object to provide an improved construction, combination and arrangement of parts in the core-insertin mechanism of casting machines of this claracter whereby the coreinserting plunger may be moved out of close juxtaposition to the rotary mold to permit a core to be mounted thereon. with greater facility. More :pecific objects of invention will appear in e specification and be pointed out In the claims in connection with the drawings which show a preferred embodiment of the invention.
y In the drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of my invention, parts being broken away and parts shown in section; and
Flgure 2 is a side elevation of a modification according to which the core-carrying plunger'is re'lolvable in a horizontal plane instead of in a vertical plane as shown'in With reference to these drawings, it will be understood that while Figure 1 shows a core-carrying plunger which swings in a vertical plane and Figure 2 shows said plunger movable in a horizontal plane, these two movements may be readily combined in a single machine so that either of said swing; ing movements may be accomplished or bot to ether.
he above identified German patent contemplates mechanism for inserting flangecores to ether with flange-core plates into the molding chambers of centrifugal machines for casting pipe or other hollow' bodies. According to said patent, the core holdin plunger is reciprocably mounted in a suita 1e bearing or pedestal, said bearing being arranged on a fixed axis which coincides with the axis of the rotary molding chamber. Difficulty has been experienced in the use of machines ofthis nature due to the fact that in order to mount the cores upof the core.

onthe reciprocable plunger, they must first be mterposed between said plunger in its retracted position and the end of the rotary mold. The available space for handling the cores is thus more .01: less limited so that this difficulty increases withthe size In order to overcome these drawbacks, the present invention contemplates 9, core inserting mechanism according to which the reciprocating plunger is moved out of its operative positlon with respect to the rotary molding chamber before the core is mounted thereon. In the preferred embodiment of m invention shown on the drawings, the p unger is suitably mounted to convey a core to and from the mold but at the same time is adapted to be swung about either or both of two difierent axes to remove it from the mold before and after its reciprocatory movement with respect thereto.
The embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 1 contemplates a core-carrying plunger 1 provided below with a rack -2 which is driven by a pinion 3, said pinion being non-rotatably mounted with respect to a gear 4 which meshes into a pinion 5 carried by a horizontal shaft to' which is secured an operating hand wheel 6. Pivotally mounted in the outer end of the corecarrying plun er 1, are three equi-spaced radially mova ble segments 7, .which are ada ted to engage the inner{ cylindrical wall of t e pipe-mold for centering the plunger with respect thereto. Each of sa1d segments is non-rotatably connected to a gear 8, in mesh with a rack 9 carried by a reciprocatory rod 10. As shown on the drawings, the reci rocatory rod 10 is slidably supported wit in the plunger 1 and may be reciprocated at will by a hand lever 11. The segments 7 are thus adapted to be moved in unison. A flange core 12 removably seated upon the plunger llis thus truly centered wlth respect to the mold within which it is to be set up. i
In order to provide suitable means whereby the plunger 1 may be moved out of juxtaposition to the centrifugal mold for'm'ounting the core thereon preparatory to its placement in the mold, said-plun er 1 ismounted to slide in a bearing 13 w ieh is movable to and fro between full line and dotted line positions shown in Figure 1. I For this purpose, bearing 13 is pivotally mounted in a pedestal 14 upon an axis 15. It will be seen that when the parts are in dotted line position shown in Figure 1, the core-carrying end of plunger 1 is well removed from the centrifugal mold and readily, accessible for mounting a core thereon or removing it therefrom. This operation may be performed by hand or any suitable hoisting device (not shown).
' plung Referring now to the embodiment of .my invention-shown in Figure 2, the construction and arrangement of 'parts are substantially similar to that shown in Figure 1 except the movement of the core-carrying er to and from juxta-position to the centrlfugal mold. .The bearing 16 within which the core-carrying plunger is slidably mounted in this embodiment, is provided with a downwardly presented shaft 17 which swivels on a vertical axis within a bearing 18 with which the pedestal 19 is provided.
I claim:
1. The combination with a centrifugal casting machine, of means movable axially thereof for inserting cores into said machine, and removing them therefrom, said means being movable transversely to said axis for mounting said core on said inserting means and removing said core therefrom.
2. The combination with a centrifugal casting machine, of mechanism for inserting a core into a centrifugal casting machlne, said mechan1s1n comprising a coreholding plunger movable axially for inserting and removing a core, said plunger being movable transversely to its core-inserting-movement into and out of position to receive a core. j v
3. The combination with a centrifugal casting machine, of a core-holding plunger movable endwise to convey a core into'and out of position within said machine, said. plunger being movable about an axis transverse to its own axis to a position in-iwhich a core may be mounted thereon or removed therefrom.
4. The combination "with a centrifugal casting machine, of a core-holding plunger reciprocable endwise and movable about different axes into and out of coaxial alinementwith the axis of rotation of said centrifugal casting machine. V
5. The combination with the rotary member ofa centrifugal ,castin machine, of a core-holding plunger suita ly mounted to swing in two different planes into and out of coaxial alinement with the rotary axis of said rotary member, and means for imparting an endwise reciprocatory movement to said plunger. l
