CIRCULATION-REGULATING PLUG VALVE.
Application filed March 27, 1922. Serial No. 547,171.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM RUBLY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Cireulation-Regulating Plug Valve; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a circulation regulating plug valve, and in particular to the regulating or controlling member thereof.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a valve which may be readily inserted in an. unbalanced installed heating system for controlling the same, by equalizing the resistance from the boiler to the boiler through each of the radiators associated with each of said regulating or balancing valves.
The chief feature of the invention consists in the construction of the valve and the regulating member therein.
The full nature of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic elevational view of a heating system including a plurality of radiators. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the balancing valve. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4.--4 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings 10 indicates a boiler provided with a main riser 11 and a common return 12. Connected with the main riser 11 are a plurality of risers 13 which terminate in a manually operable valve 14 in turn connected to a radiator 15. Each of the radiators discharges through a balancing valve 16 and a return line 17 which discharges into the common return 12. In unbalanced heating systems, the unbalancing is due to unequal frictional resistance from the boiler to the boiler through each of the radiators; and because of such unequal resistance, some of the radiators are at a maximum temperature, while others are at a minimum temperature. One method of correcting this evil is to install a balancing valve for each radiator, whereby the resistance of the flow of heating fluid to and through said radiator may be regulated, so that the resistance of the flow of heating fluid from the boiler through each of the radiators to the boiler will be substantially equal, thereby insuring uniform heating by all of the radiators.
The novelty in the present invention consists in the construction of the balancing or circulation regulating valve which hereinbefore has been indicated by the numeral 16. In Figs. 2, 3 and 4 this valve is shown enlarged and in detail. In said figures the valve casing is indicated by the numeral 16, and herein is illustrated as comprising a T fitting having the angularly positioned openings 20, 21 and 22, the openings 21 and 22 being in alignment with each other and being interiorly threaded. The opening 20 is provided with a suitable union construction. indicated generally by the numeral 23, and associated with the opening 21 is a conduit or pipe 2-1. The opening 22 is closed by means of a threaded plug 25 having a socket wrench engageableportion 26. The socket wrench engageable portion 26 is provided with an indicating arrow in the form of a recess 27. The flange of the body 16 adjacent the plug receiving opening 22 is suitably legended, as at 28, to indicate the various positions of the balancing valve plum The controlling portion of the plug includes a cylindrical portion 29 and a semi-cylindrical wall or skirt 30. The skirt 30 is extended, as shown in Fig. 3, so that when the same is rotated into the desired position, said skirt will regulate the flow from the opening 20 to the opening 21, thereby regulating the resistance of fluid flow in the radiator circulatory system. As shown herein, the plug 25 is screwed into the opening 22 until it is entirely threaded therein. Thereafter the plug is turned the additional amount until the arrow 27 indicates the degree of balancing required. Thus the plug will be socurely positioned in the adjusted position. and it will be impossible to manually alter said position without the use of the socket wrench. This construction prevents ready manual operation of the valve and thereby compels the radiator control for personal comfort to be maintained through the manually operable valve 14 and not by means of the balancing valve 16.
