Applica tjion filed Math 14, @1925.
To all whom it may concern:
l, Beit known that I, -JOHN. VVrNnLEn, a. citizen of thejUnited States, and residing in Philadelphia, in the county. of Philadelphia 6 and; State ofPennsylvan'ia, have inventeda. new and useful Permutation Vault I Look, :Qf. which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in permutation locks for vault 1 doors and thelike, adapted to be locked and unlocked by means of a novel permutation device without the aid of any key.
- -Wly. 'nvention further relates to novel, lock of the character'stated, which: may be. so interlocked and'interlinked with another,v or similar locks, on the same door, as to. pro--'' vide an operative interengagement of the two at all times, wherebyonemay not'be released without releasing each of other locks on the door. g
WVith the above ends in view, my invention consists'of bolts slidably mounted near, and at rightangles to the edge of the door,.a
plurality of rotary locking tumblers mount-1 ed within the door, adapted positively to retain said bolts, and a common actuating device for each of said bolts, for moving said bolts inwardly or outwardly simultaneously, so as to lock said door at a plurality of points. My invention further consists of other intrumentalities and novel, details of construction as will be more fully described in the claims appended hereto.
I For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have. shown in the accompanying drawings forms thereof which are at present preferred by me, since they will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, :although it is to be understood that the various 40 instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and thatmy'invention isnot limitedto the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown? and described. '.v I 4 Y Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate like parts: I
Fig. 1 represents a front elevation of a vault door embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a rear elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 represents a section on line H of Fig. 3. V
v of the sliding bolts is provided witlione Fig.5 represents afronteleyationof oor mb ying my nv on... vF 'g; 6, represents ea secti 1 tE- gL ;u i l iji j. I) If. 1 Y -;.;Fig.j. 7 represents .a.;sectionI-on-.1ine 7-' {Z Fig. 8 represents a front elevation .on an enlargedscale, of one ,ofthe rotary tumblers.
In. the drawings, l designates the front wall of the-safe ,vault or thelike, having hinged-.theret0,;on the hinge 2, a vault door 3 ,oftl1e. usual construction;v In order to secure an interlocking of the -door .3; with. the wall 2 of the vault at a plurality of points along the outer and contacting pe- 7 rip'hery ofthedoor, Iprovide a plurality. of radially disposedsliding bolts 4:, slidably mounted within suitableguides 5, attached to or formed integral' with the door Each 7 5 or more rotary tumblers 6, carriedin suitable bearing openings or apertures, extend in'ginto the, wall :3, in alignment with the edge or edges of thebolt' l. :Thefbolt is in turn provided with a semi-circular recess. 7 in the edgesthereof, in alignment with said tumbler 6, in the outer jor locking position of, the bolt, .soas to receive said tumbler; within said semi-circular recess, thereby to lock saidbolt in its outerorlockingposition. In order to release the bolt however, so as. to permit the. same to. be moved inwardlyinto; a disengaging or unlocking position, the, tumblers 6, are provided with a recess extending to approximately. the axisof the tumbler, in alignment'with the edge of said bolt, into which recess '8 said bolt may enter, when the tumbler, is so revolved asto bring. the, recess clearly in alignment/with the. bolt. Thusuponturn'ing one or'severalof. the tumblers into a recess 7,-the bolt is fixed or locked ,in, its position; while uponrevolving, the tumbler to ,the proper angular position-s0 as to withdraw the same .from. therecesses 7,fand to alignthefiat'faces 8 of the recess with the bolt, the bolt is permitted to slide into its inner or unlocked position. 1
In order to permit the accurate setting of each of the tumblers 6, by sight, by any person or persons authorized to open the vault, each of the tumblers 6 is provided with a dial 9 having proper graduations thereon,
,which may be numbered or otherwise designated, and a knob 10, whereby the dials and Iiii 6.
\ tumblers into the aligning or opening posi-- familiar with setting the same the tumblers may be turned Thus, upon initially noting the proper positions of each of the dials. for revolving or setting the tions thereof, thetumblers may be'readily set into said positions at any time by one more it will also be seen that it requires only the mis-alignment of one of-theseveral tumblers 6 in order to lock the bolt in its closed position.
In order permanently to secure the tumblers'6, within their proper apertures in the door, the'discsor collars 11 are securedto their inner ends bymeans of' taper pins or any other suitable fastening means, as shown in Figs. 8 and 4'. v c
In order to move each of the sever-al'bolts 4 simultaneously and in unison with each other, and in order also to lock each and every one of the several bolts by each and every other bolt; I provide a central shaft'12 extending through the door, operated by an outer handle 13,and carrying on the inner' end thereof a spider l l'having a spiral extension co-rresponding-to each of said sliding boltst. Each of the limbs 15'is operatively attached to the corresponding bolt, through a loop or other guiding means16,'on'the inner end of each bolt, when the spider is revolved in either direction. Thus upon turningthe handle 13 in arig-ht hand direction, in Figure 1, each of the bolts 4 will be with-- drawn simultaneously ;*while upon revolving the bolts 4: in the reverse direction, the bolts will be extended outwardly into their locking positions. By this novel arrangement'of locking bolts, it is also apparent that each of the locking bolts 4 is retained in itsouter 40 or engaging position and may not be withdrawn, until each and everyone of the bolts is. free to; be Withdrawn by the spider, since any one of the bolts maylock the spider against any rotatory movement thereof.
While 111" above descriptionand the accompanying'figures in the drawings, I have 7 shown embodiment of my invention as applied to -vau'lt doors and the like, the same is applicable to any door, closure, or the like, one form of which I have illustrated in Figs! 5- inclusive; in'which illustrations,
my novel permutation lock is applied'to a door of the usual construction employed in dwellings and the like. Here the spring bolt 1 7 sliding within the recess 18, urged out- .Furtherwhlch engages anumber of'pins 22 carried by the bolt, and which shaftmay'be revolved by any knob or handle. o i 7 It will now be apparent; that I have de-.
vised anovel and useful permutation vault lock which embodiesthe features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present instance,
shown and describeda preferred embodimen-t thereof which will give in practice sat isfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that such embodiment is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope oftne invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. j r
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Let; ters Patent is 1 I P I 1. In a device of the characterstated a vault door, a plurality of radially disposed locking bolts slidablyfcarried therein, rotatable permutation tumblers seated within said doorin alignment with the edges of each of said locking bolts, a dial carried by the outer ends of said tumblers for properly positioning the same, a central operating shaft ex tending through the door, actuating means carried by said shaft and means carried by each ofsaid bolts for en, ;aging said actuating device; I I 1 1 2. In a device of the character stated,a vault door, a'plurality of radially disposed locking bolts slidably carried therein, rotatable permutation tumblers seated within said door, in alignment with the edges ofeach of said locking bolts, a dial carried by the outer ends of said tumblers for properly position ing the same, a central operating shaft extending through the door, a spider having a; spiral arm corresponding with each bolt, car ried by said shaft, and means carried by each JOHN WINK-LEE.
