To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HOMER-L. LATIMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whittier, in the county of Los Angeles and pipe extending'into the well hole.
Heretofore it has been customary to lift the string of pipe from within the well hole until a stand of pipe is extending upwardly within the derrick above the rotary table. It is then customary to rotatethe rotary table so as to separate the stand of pipe' ate the draw-works so as to lift the stand from the string of pipe within the well hole,
and assoon as the stand ofpipe has been unscrewed from the stringof pipe, to operclear of. the string of pipe in'the well hole. This operation of startingtlie draw-works at the instant that. the stand of pipe has been unscrewed requires a considerable amount of skill and unsatisfactory for the reason that sometimes the draw-works is started before the stand of pipe has been completely unscrewed, or the draw-works is started after the stand has been completely unscrewed, allowing the stand to ride upon the string of pipe within the well hole, damaging the threads upon the pins and boxes on the pipe. It is therefore an object of this invention to provide a device which will automatically lift the stand of pipe clear of the string of pipe within the well hole' at the instant that the stand of pipe is completely detached from the pipe string.
7 With the foregoing and other objects in view which will be made manifest in the following detailed description and pointed out in the appended claims. reference is had to the accompanying drawings foran illustrative embodiment of the invention, wherein:

Referring to the accompanying drawings wherein similar reference characters desig nate similar parts throughout, the derrick shown is of conventional construction,
shown as being provided with mud sills 1O upon which rest cross sills ll supporting the floor 12. The derrick cornices are shown at 13 connected1by derrick girts 14 and with braces 15. The well hole is designated at 16 within which is disposed the pipe string 17. The pipe string 17 extends upwardly through the conventional rotary table R. In the illustration, the stand of pipe which is to be. disconnected from the pipe string 17 is indicated at 18. The stand so of pipe at itslower end is provided with a pin 19 which isthreaded into the boxv 20 upon the pipestring17. The upper end of the stand of pipe 18 is shown with its box 21beneath which is disposed the elevator 22 55 supported by the hook 23 upon the traveling block 24. The crown block 25, which is of conventional construction, is mounted upon the top of the derrick. The conventional draw-works is also mounted upon the derrick and is illustrated at 26.. The reference. character 27 indicates the calf wheel with which is associated the reel 28. The line 29 has one end secured to the reel upon the draw-works and extends over" the crown block- 25 and beneath the traveling block 24;,
providing a suitable number of laps extending beneath the traveling block 24and over the crown block-25. From the' crown block 25' the dead line-30 ex tends downwardly and is connectedto the reel 28 associated with the calfwheel' 27. The above described construction is conventional upon the ordinary rotary 'drilling rigsh Theinvention consists ofa cable section 1 or other flexible element 31 which is fde- .tachably secured to the dead line 30 as by t a clamp 32 which is located a suitable dis tance' above the reel 28. drill pipe is lifted; a. suflicient distance so thatthebox 20 is slightly above the rotary; table B so that an elevator can be placed thereabove. As the line 2911s tightened or is wound upon the draw-works, the weight. of the drill pipe creates a considerable. tension upon the dead line 30.-. This tension. tightens the cable, 31 and. pulls upwardly upon the eyebolt 35, compressing the spring. 39 ,betweenfth'e block' 38, and the plug 41.

In a drilling derrick, a crown block, a traveling block, a line extending over the blocks providing a hoist, a hoisting means, one end of the line being secured to the hoisting means, the other end of the line being secured to an object upon the derrick providing a dead line, an element secured to the dead line, and means for applying tension to said element capable of lifting a stand of pipe, whereby a string of pipe may be lifted by the hoisting means, and a stand of pipe may be automatically lifted clear of the string upon detachment from the string without operating the hoisting means.
3. In a drilling derrick, a crown block, a traveling block, a line extending over the blocks to provide a hoist, hoisting means, one end of the line being secured to the hoisting means, the other end of the line being secured to an object upon the derrick providing a dead line, an element secured to the dead line, and spring means associated wlth said element so as to cause said element to exert tension upon the dead line whereby a string of'p-ipe may be elevated by said hoisting means and a stand of pipe may be elevated by said spring means upon detachment from the string Without operating the hoisting means.
4. In a drilling derrick, a crown block, a traveling block, a line extending over the blocks to provide a hoist, a hoisting means, one end of the line being secured to the hoisting means and the other end of the line' being secured to. an object upon the derrick providing a deadline, an element secured to the dead line, aspring mounted upon the derrick, and means providing an adjustment for securing said element to said spring so as to cause said element to exert tension upon the dead line whereby a string of pipe may be elevated by said hoisting means and a stand of pipe may be elevated by said spring upon detachment of the stand of pipe from thestring without op erating the hoisting means.
