Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
MILLARD S. BURNS, `OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO ROBERT PALEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOOT-WARMERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 156,657, dated November 10, 1874,' application filed September 26, 1874.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MILLARD SHELTON BURNS, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Foot-Warmers, of Which the following is a specication:
This invention relates to certain improvements in foot-Warmers and the invention consists in the combination, with a foot-Warmer constructed With openings lined With Wool, or its equivalent, of a spring or springs arranged between the lining and the frame of the foot warmer, and an elastic band or bands encircling the lining to compress the same upon and around the feet, as will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective, showing the openings; Fig. 2, a cross-section, showing the muff, bands, and spring.
A represents the body, which is of any suitable shape, and upholstered to suit the taste. The top a Will be stuffed as a cushion or kneeling-pad, suitable for church use. b b represent two openings in the side or front of the box, stool, ottoman, or hassock. These are eaoli large enough to admit the foot, and are lined throughout with fur, Wool, or any other soft and Warm texture or material. These constitute a mult for each foot, and each are made narrower at the inner end or toe, to conform somewhat to the shape of the foot. As
the feet, when thrust'into these muffs or Warm ers b b, Will be Without a sufficient resting-ba# sis, and as the foot Will naturally assume a position with the toes higher than the heel, I
have placed one or more springs, c, under the forward part of the muff, so that the ball of the foot Will press the springs, making not only a resting-place, but sustaining the foot in a natural and easy position.
The springs may be of any style or kind.
To insure the feet being closely pressed or surrounded with the Warming material coinposing the muff, I arrange around the outside of these muffs one or more elastic bands, cl d. These will press the muffs close when the feet are inserted.
The body of the box A is stuffed or filled with seagrass, or other suitable material, Which completely envelops the foot-muffs.
The above-described device makes a combined foot-Warmer and foot-stool for the house, or for riding in cold weather, or a combined kneeling-pad and foot-Warmer for churches, suitable for all seasons.
1f desired, both foot-openings b b may be made into one, making one mui' for both feet.
I claim- The combination, with a frame, A, having the lined openings or muffs b b, ofthe spring or springs c c and elastic bands d ol, all substantially as described.v
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
M. S. BURNS.
Witnesses J. R. BRAKE, T. H. PARsoNs.
