DE WITT M. ONEILL AND.SI-IERMA'N MCKOWN, F YALE, OKLAHOMA.
OIL AND GAS SAVING AND LIFE-SAVING COLLAR FOR OIL AND GAS WELL DRILLING OUTFITS.
Application filed May I}, 1925. Serial No. 30,274.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DE WITT M. ONEILL and SHERMAN MoKoWN, citizens of the United States, residing at Yale, in thecoun-v 5 ty of Payne and State of Oklahoma, 'have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Oil and Gas Savingand Life-Saving Collars for Oil and Gas Well Drilling Outfits, of which the following is a specifilo cation, reference being had to the acc0mpanying drawings. j 7
Our lnvention relates to improvement in' oil and gas saving, and life saving' col1ars for drilling well outfits.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be easily and economically made and installed,"
prevent; the spontaneous overflowing of the well and its voluntarily blowing itself in,
10 and checks and holds the flow of the oil and,
can be cleared of those gas until the ri n time to prepare for the around it, and glve care of oil and gas when the flow is per mitted to come from the well prevents damage to the rig and tools, prevents the maiming and killing I of employees and others around the rig, prevents'the loss of oil and and blowing om fire, perout and e control 1n,'prevents damage and loss changin of tools at any time "head an hole may be open.
The invention, novel features, details of construction, and combination of arts, and
- other objects of the invention wil be hereinafter more particularly set forth, illustrated inthe oneage drawing, and pointed out in the ap en e'd claim. a
Reference ereby made to thedrawing 49 forming a part of this application, of which,
Figure l'is an elevation view of the device showing the ordinary and usual parts usedin connection with it,
Figure 2 is a sectional perspective view of a portion of the device.
Like characters of reference designate like The device consists of a heavy collar- 9 described, of suitable material, used '0 I 50 narilywin connection with the usualinipple 1,-the usual clamp'2 holding members 3, .4, ordinary and usual collar'5: thereabove, the usual nipple {6 connected therewith at one end, and at the otherconnected with'the riphery 1 1 helically threaded and extenddevice 9, an ordinary and usual nipple 7 connected at one end to said device thereabove and at the other end to the ordinary and usualcontrol head 8. All of these parts except. the device 9 are not claimed in this application as invention except as'they may 00 be used in connection therewith.
The device 9 consists of a cylindrically shaped thick heavy collar of suitable mater1 al helically threadedat the'lower end 12 and at the upper end 13 connecting with a nipple 6 therebelow and a nipple 7 thereabove, each helically threaded to fit said device 9 at 12 and 13. There is a plurality 01 larger ports entering said device at the pemg a distance into the wall of said device approximately half way therethrough 15. A smaller and reduced sized port 18 on each of said larger ports 14 extends from the inner end of said larger port 15 inwardly and downwardly therefrom through the inner wall of said collar as shown at 19, connecting with said port 14: ,are steam connections 16, 17. v
In practically every oil and gas field much loss has been entailed by wasting oil and gas, losing tools, and many oil field workers have been maimed and killed by the sudden and unexpected gushing and flowing of the wells. Many attempts have been made to stop and prevent this, all of which have failed, by being impractical and inadequate. a
It will be observed by connecting up the device on the drilling outfit at 14 with steam pressure always present in the field the port l l'up to 15 being larger than the port 18, 19, forces the steam through a smaller aperture at a-tremendous pressure intothe inside the casing and down into the well, thereby checking and stopping any escape of either oil or gas from the well, holding it entirely back -a'ndw-ithin control so as to allow for the preparing for taking care of the product of thick and heavy,,.much thicker and heavier than the casingiiithewell allow great pressure to be. used thereon by the steam, and the ports being made permanently into the 1 walls, and extending. inwardly and down?- wardly givesthe steam a downward direction into the well, and being thus confixed by the casing in the well and the walls of the hole itself permits the steam to be introduced far down into the well and by its weight, moisture and force prevents theoutflowing of the gas or oil from the well until such time as it is desired to permit same to flow.
' From the description of the one page'accompanying drawing 'and specification the advantages of the operation, making, con,- struction and application of the device will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which our invention pertains; but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the making, constructing,- operation --and application Without departing from the principle of the invention, or sacrificing any I of its advantages.
a point midway the wall thereof, a similar plurality of smaller ports leading from the inner end of the larger ports and extending inwardly and downwardly therefrom and through the inner wall of said collar.
DE WITT M. ONEILL. SHERMAN MoKOWN.
