J. BRENZINGER COVE?` FOR CONTAINERS Filed Sept. 22. 1925 MMG/www Patented Dec. I15, 1925. i
UNITED `STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS BRENZINGER, OF FAIRFIELD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIG-NOR TO THE MAX AMS MACHINE COMPANY, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
COVER Fon CONTAINERS.
Application led September 22, 1923. Serial N0. 664,142.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULiUs BRENZINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fairfield, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improve- :ments in Covers for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to. covers for containers of irregular shapesuch as the ordinary sardine box.
In the art as heretofore practiced, noncircular covers have been made in which the long side of the cover is provided with an initial deformation in its pendent flange for the purpose of clinching the cover to the can before the seaming operation takes place. This construction has been found unsatisfactory because the deformation virtually forms a guide that permits the cover to be slid lengthwise oil' the can and also because it interferes with the seaming operation by reason of a rather abrupt change in the contour of the cover at a point where the seaming tools are not constructed to deal adequately with a change in the'contour of the cover or the flange thereof.
The main object and feature of this invention is to overcome these objections and also to facilitate automatic separation of a cover from a stack by preventing a closely nested relation of the covers.
This is accomplished by providing the pendent flange with downwardly and inwardly bent tabs at the corners of the cover or at the point of junction of the angular sides. In this way too close nesting of the covers, when in a hopper, is prevented and also the covers cannot be displaced or slid lengthwise lwith respect to each other or with respect to a body to which they may be applied. Furthermore the sealning tool is adapted to change its path at the junction of the angular sides of the cover so that a change in the seaming operation can take place more readily there than when it 'is attempted to change the path of the seaming tool when it is running alonga straight edge. stronger than the straight sides thereof so that the tabs can be bent downwardly and inwardly without danger of undue deformation and the consequent possibility of the cover not fitting the body.
Also the corners of the cover areV In the accompanying drawings the invention is shown in a concrete and preferred form in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view ofa cover embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view of a stack of nested covers embodying the invention looking in the direction of arrow 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the stack of covi ers shown in Fig. 2 looking in the direction of arrow 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the stack of covers on the plane of line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of a cover embodying the invention.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of.
the right hand end of Fig. 4 on an enlarged scale.
l indicates a blank of sheet material having a plurality of sides 2 and 3 disposed at an angle to each other and having a pendent surrounding flange 4. At the junction of sides 2 and 3 there are provided downwardly and inwardly bent tabs 5. It will be observed that these covers, when stacked as in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 6, are maintained in spaced relation by reason of tabs 5 so that spaces 6 are provided between adjacent covers both at the long and short sides of the covers, and not that only but dished portion 7 of the covers are not closely nested as seen more particularly in Fig. 6.
These covers may also be used with advantage in connection with the machine shown in application Ser. No. 564,243, iiled May 27, 1922, in which a preliminary clinching of the covers to the cans is performed prior to the seaming operation.
I claim:
Anon-circular cover for containers comprising: a blank of sheet material having a plurality of sides at an angle to each other provided with a pendent surrounding flange having downwardly and inwardly bent tabs at the junction of the angular sides.
Signed at Bridgeport. in the county of Faireld and State of Connecticut, this 14 day of September, 1923.
J ULIUS BRENZIN GER.
