IMPROVEMENT IN HYDRANTSAND STREET-WASHERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,578, dated November 3, 1874; application filed October 16,1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, B. E. LEHMAN, of Bethlehem, Northampton county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Hydrants and Street-Washers, of which the following is a specification:

' The object of my invention is to so construct a hydrant or street-washer that ready access may be had to the valve without digging round the lower casing in order to remove it from the ground;,and this object I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figures land 2 are vertical sections of my improved hydrant or street-washer.

To the top of the outer casin g A of the h ydrant is fitted the upper casing B, and to the latter the cap 0. D is the operating-shaft, which has its bearings in the casing B, and which can be readily removed after withdrawing the cap, the shaft being furnished with a suitable handle, a. On the shaft D is an eccentric, 1), adapted to a yoke, c, on the top of the rod d, which has at its lower end the valvecarrier m, the latter being arranged to slide in a cylinder, g, and being so constructed that the water can pass freely through it, the lower end of the cylinder, which projects into the valve-chamber K, forming the seat of the valve 1 attached to the carrier m. A packing-ring, 0, of suitable material, intervenes between a shoulder on the cylinder 9 and the valve-chamber. The chamber K forms a part of the threaded plate K, which screws into the lower end of the casing A. J is the inlet-pipe, passing through the said casin g, and screwing into a branch of the valve-chest. Into the top down the tube and cylinder gare forced down on the valve-chamber K, and compress the packing 0, thus forming a water-tight joint. The cylinder 9 has a vent, j, through which the waste-water can pass into the exterior casing A, the screw K being .loose enough to permit this waste-water to leak into the ground.

The screw-ring p is the sole means of confining the cylinder 9 to its place 011 the chest K, so that, when access has to be had to the valve or its seat, all that is necessary is to first detach the nozzle 00, then remove the cap (3 and operating-shaft, and unscrew the ring 19, when the latter, with the cylinder 9, connecting-tubes n n, valve-rod and valve, can be elevated from the casing A, to which they can be readily restored, in a manner which needs no explanation.

I claim as my invention In a hydrant or street-washer, the outer casing A, its fixed valve-chamber K, and detachable screw ring or nut 19, in combination with the valve and valve-rod, outlet-chest 1, cylinder g, and connecting-tubes, all substantially as set forth.
