I OSCAR znnx, now BY JUDICIAL CHANGE or NAME OSCAR ULYssEs ZERK, or CLEVE- LAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TUBING COMPANY.
TO THE IBASSICK MANUFAC- LuBRIcA'rme APPARATUS.
Application filed March 14, 1921. Serial No. 452,127.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, OSCAR ZERK, now by judicial change of name OscAn' ULYssns ZERK, a citizen of the Republic of Czechoslovakia, residing at Cleveland, in the counher which may be readily attached to a 16 grease or oil nipple for providing an effective temporary connection between the same and a source of supply.
When lubricant is. to be forced to a bearing by means of a connecting member and under pressure, it is desirable that a coupling means be provided which 'may be quickly applied and readily detached when desired, but which when in place will insure an absolutely tight connection, and it is one of the 26 objects of my invention to provide such a device.
Other objects attained by my invention will be apparent in the course of the followthe claims.
In the drawings, Fig. l is a central longitudinal section of one embodiment of my invention showing the coupling in place on a nipple; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device;
of Fig. 2; Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are similar views respectively of another embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of still another form.
tion being cut away whereby the flanges 13 are formed, having the slots 14 between them, in which the jaws 20, which will now be described, may project. These jaw x'nembers or detents 20 surround the enlarged cup portion of member 10, andtheir surfaces form, for the greater part of their ing description and will be pointed out in Fig. 3 is an end view looking from the left Referring to the parts by referencenumextent, sectors "of a substantially cylindrical surface. These members are bent radially outward adjacent their inner ends, as shown at 21, so that this portion of each of these members constitutes a substantially. cylindrical surface sector with its axis extending at an angle to the axis of the other seetor. This relationship is clearly illustrated in Figs. 4 and 7. Adjacent the other-ends of the members a portion ofthe material is cut away from each edge and the remaining.
portion bent radially inwardly to form the projections 22, which are adapted to extend behind a shoulder on the head of a grease or oil cup G. As'shown in Fig. 1, the reduced portion of the detents 20 passes thru the slots 14, as will be seen in Fig. 3. On referring to Fig. 4, in which the'same form of cc-cents are illustrated as in Figs. 1 to 3, it will be seen that the members 20 may be rocked about the fulcrum 21 so that the ends 22 may be moved outward or inward radially.
. In order to provide for-manipulating the detents a sleeve 23. is provided, surrounding 'the' detents and longitudinally movable thereof. This sleeve has a restricted portion 24, which'extends inward to contact with the members 20, while toward the end of this sleeve closest to the nipple there are formed two circumferentially extending notches 25, 26 on the interior of the sleeve. These notches are adapted to be engaged by the expanding spring 27, carried by the annular members 28 on the member 10. In or- .der to provide a sealed communication between the grease cup and the interlor of the gripper, a washer'BO is slidably mounted within this cup and is adapted to be held-in outward positionby means of the helicalspring 31, which bears atone end upon a shoulder on the cup and at its other end upon a spring seat32 on the washer.
Referring now particularly to Figs. 4, 5
and 6, the construction of the cup member and jaws is substantially'that of Fig. 1.
having portions cut entirely away at its upturned end has a flange 41, which is flaring for the greater part of its extent and-has the slots 42 cut therein for receiving the jaws 20. The flange 41 is cupped backwardly. to form thecylindrical portion 43, as shown The cup 40, however, of Fig. 4 instead of in Fig. 4; which forms. a guide-'for'the sleeve 50 slid-ahle thereonL- This sleeve shown as made of two partshaving/radially inwardly this spring being held "imposition bypfl'ange 53,,which as illustrated is in the-term of an "annular dished ring carried between shoulders on the member 49.;

I- have also devised a construction which may consist-of 'few and simple metal parts;
which are Tof such form as to be adapted'f to he made rapidly and cheaply by ordinary drawing andpnnching processes, and to be readily assembled at small expense.
" 'While I have described specific,embodiments of -my invention, it is apparent that I many difierentf forms of device, embodying the principles thereof iinight be made. The
foregoing description is therefore to be taken as illustrative of my invention and not as restrictive of its character "and scope.
