UNITED STATES,
WILLIAM W. MORRAL, OF MORRAL, OHIO.
GREEN-QORN-HUSKING MACHINE.
Application filed January 16,1922. serial naszaesa To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLIAM W. MORRAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Morral, in the county of Marion and Stateof Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Green-Gorn-Husking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to machines designed to butt and husk two files or rows of green corn, an example of such machine being exhibited in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,314,353, dated August 26, 1919.
The ob ect of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of such machines whereby they are compacted and better balanced in the application of power for operating them.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts broken out and omitted.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line II- II Fig. 1 looking to the left.
Fig. 3 is a detail in top plan view of the husking rolls. 7
Fig. 4 is a modification of the belt for carrylng the ears along the husking rolls.
'The present machine includes a frame having sidemembers 1 supported by legs 2. Traveling in connection with a suitable upwardly inclined bed 18 in the upper portion of the frame is an endless belt or carrier 19 traveling on sprockets 24 and'having flights 51 by means of which the ears to be husked are carried to the feeding rolls 34, gaging screws 25- and butt removers 8, one set of these rolls, screws and removers being arranged on each side of the machine with suitable means for their similar and simultaneous operation.
Journaled below the lower reach of the belt 19 and transversely of the direction of motion of the latter are two pairs of husking rolls 110, 110? and 111, 111 of usual form all geared together so that the members of each pair turn toward each other at the top to draw the husks from an ear deposited in the bite or valley'between the members of the pairs at their upper sides. One roll of each pair is slightly higher than the other to cause a rolling of the car as itis being husked, Longitudinally between the two pairs of husking rolls is secured a wall or strip 35 for the purpose of confining the cars to the rolls between which they are deposited. The two pairs of rolls are also flanked longitudinally by strips or walls. 35*" on which ride the end of the flights here-- inafter described.
, Arranged around the upper end of carrier 19 is a curved hood or guide plate 63 one side of which terminates to cause the release of the ears butted at one side of the machine onto the first pair of husking rolls 110, 110 while the-other is extended as seen at 63 (see Fig. 3) to permit the butted cars at the other side to be carried to the second 7 travel over the strip 35. The belt thus described it will be noted is arranged to travel around the lower reach of .the main feed belt 19 without interfering with the latter and the two belts can operate to perform their respective functions at the same time. Instead of using the belt with the flights 38 as shown in Fig. 1 said flights can be arranged on a chain moving in a horizontal plane as shown in Fig. 4.
The main power shaft is located. at 32,
said shaft having affixed thereto a belt pulley which is to be driven in the direction indicated by the arrow near it (see Fig. 1
From the shaft 32 power is transmitted by sprocket chain 81 to the shaft of the husking roll 110*, which being thereby rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow thereon turns all the husking rolls in the desired direction as before indicated. From a suitable sprocket wheel on the shaft of the husking roll 110 a sprocket chain 82v drives a shaft 42 for operating bevel gears 43, 43 and the sprocket chains 37 to feed the ears along'the huskingrolls. From a suitable sprocket wheel on the shaft 43 is a sprocket chain 26 that travels over a.
sprocket wheel 125 on shaft 21 and sprocket wheel 108 on shaft 106. The shaft 21 con "tain Suitable usual sprockets for driving single as on double corn husking machines The forms of theparts can be changed the carrier belt 19 while the shaft 106 drives rolls and the other file of such ears to be a belt 105 in the lower portion of the main frame for carrying away the husks drawn through the husking rolls and dropped onto said belt 105.
The feeding rolls 34, gaging rolls 25 and butt removers 8 are provided with suitable means or gearing to be driven from, the main power shaft 32 as shown or as developed in the Morral machine in the patented and practical art and needs, no detailed description herein and especiallyas such detailsdo not constitute a part of the present invention.
The operation of the present invention is briefly this: The ears of corn to behusked are placed in two fileson rows on the front, that is the right hand end of the table as shown in Fig, 1, in advance of the flights 51 and the ears areby these flights carried cross-wise of: their length to the butt removers '8, the latter cutting off the butts. Beyondthe butt removers said flights carry the ears through the guide or hood 63 to the bushing rolls one file of ears being de livered to the pair of rolls 110, 110 and theother to the pair of rolls 1'11, 111. Upon their deposition in the bushing rolls the ears are carried by the flights '38, meanwhile being deprived of their, husks, to the side, o h ma h n Wh e they ar scharged, into a suitablereceptacle to be carried away.
The drawingsshow a double husker butI claim'as my invention an improvement on without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed, For example othermeans can be employed; for causing the ears to move along, the husk ng rolls.
