Description

Dec. 8, 1925. v 1,564,881
E. A. MONTGOMERY ARTICLE CARRIER Filed July 21. 1924 EA PL AMBER? NO/VTGO/YZ'PK Patented Dec. 8, 1925. v
ARTICLE Application filed Ju1y21,
To all 10/10 272 it may concern;
Be it known that I, EARL AMnnR'r MoN'r- GOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Article Carriers, of which the following is a specification;
'My invention has reference, in its broad aspect, to improvements in article carriers of the type adapted to be detachably-supported upon a portion of a persons body whereby the object carried can be readily inspectedat all times, will not interfere with free movements of the'limbs, and will be comparatively safe from damage; and more particularly it-is my purpose to provide an article carrier of this type which is adapted to be mounted upon a persons forearm so that the article carried, as for instance a watch, will be removed from object-s grasped by the hands of the wearer, will not hamper the movement of the arm, and will be in full View at all times. I V I In certain occupations, as for instance those of electric railway motorman, aviator, bus or coach driver, chauffeur, andthe like, it is necessary to be constantly familiar with the time and by the same token complete control of the motor or vehicle must be maintained which usually necessitates the employmentof both of the hands of the operator. Heretofore wrist watches, watch hangers, fixed clock mount1ngs,'and other special devices have been employed to attain the desired end but all fall short of accomplishment for the reason that carriers mounted on the wrist interfere with the movement of the wrist and hand or become covered by the coat sleeve or cuff, while fixed mountings on the vehicle are subject to displacement and breakage and to undesirable vibration and jolts. Furthermore, these previous types of carriers are not disposed to avoid possible accidental knocks or blows which result in the breaking of the instrument. My device on the other hand is subject to none of these disadvantages and may be mounted with facility irrespective of the type or thickness of the garment worn by' the operator.
lVhile in the foregoing I have' defined some of the advantages ofmy invention, other and equally importantadvantages are attributable to it among which are, briefly stated; First, the employment of unique.
-s rin attachin members in lieu of the EARL AMBERT MONTGOMERY," 0F- PASADENA, CALIFORNIA. j
CARRIER;
usual strap fasteners; second, the utiliza-' tion of a ribbed flexible casing for the spring members to prevent slipping of the carrier and wear'upon a garment over which itis attached, said casing'being removable and replaceable; third, the provision of novel means for removably mountingithe spring attachlng members, and; fourth, the formationof the body of the carrier with vunique means for removably retaining a watch of the like and guarding it againstaccidental blowsand knocks.
articlecarrier as especially adapted to the Furthermore, while have here shown my display of a watch, it is obviously capable anddesigned for the carrying ofany instrument which 'is small and-light enough to instance, a compass, barometer,: altitude be supported upon the limb of a person. For i V .75
recorder,or any otherinstrument maybe ,i subst tuted in place of a watch, or it may be used as a carrier fora coin box and class fier I or the like. a
Consequently, while I have in the present instance defined for the sake ofillustration a specific form of my article carrier it' will be understood that I do not desireto limitf myself except asmay be indicatediby the scope of the claimsappended hereunto, and
forming apart ofthis specification.
In the drawing wherein is illustrated an embodimentlof my invention;

same to the body, and
or similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing, 1n WlllCh (1), (2);, and (3) The" lowermost or base or bottom view of the Like-characters of reference refer it like .The body of my article carrier "is formed with three layers or plies of material, preferably leather, designated 7 respectively;
moved to showthe manner of attaching the ply (l) is formed with two sets ofsl'its; (4) i and '(5) respectively. 'The 'slits of eachjset are paralleL and'the corresponding 'slitsfrof iii A I thetwo, sets'arerelatively valignedpso that the terminals of the 'sets 'contemplateg adfjacent quadi'angles. The base ply (1) isf stitched completely around its edges as at a mediate ply is preferably of the same shape as the base ply. Around each set of slits, but slightly spaced thererrem, plies"(1") and (2) are stitched together as at b so that the sets (4) and resemble pockets open. at
both ends through the slits." f
Super-posed upon the intermediate ply (2) is the top ply (3) which is formed with a central opening (6). The material of the ply'is flared or pressed outwardly as at (7) to form a watch pocket (B), and itwill be understood t'hatby changing the shape of the opening"(6) and flared orpressed out portion that other articles of different sizes and" shapes maybe readily accommodated. Leading from the top edge of ply (3) and extending toward the opening (6) is a slot' (8) the material of the ply'on either'side of the slot being formedto provide'ears (9) and (10). The ply is stitched 'to the'ply-(2) around its bottom edge and partway up the sides as at c, and for furtlienreinforcement"of the respective plies they areriveted' together as at (11). Each of the'ears '(9) -and' (10) is provided with the female element of a snap fastener (12), the male element of which is carried by the intermediatefp'ly." Thus, to arrange'an article in the.pocket(B) the snap fasteners (12) are detached and the top ply bentback part inherently resilient tubular protective by grasping the ears and "(10); the point of bend being coincident with a line between rivets (11). Thearticle, in the'pres-' ent instance a Watch, having'beed'dispose'd in position,'thel'top ply'is fastened down thereupon with the projecting shank and stem arrangedin the'slot (8) between the ears'as shown in Figure 1. A plush or other similar soft pad (notishown) maybe, and preferably is, aflixed toth'e intermediate pad beneath the watchto more effectually sup' port the same, and an opening an is provided to hang the carrier upon a supporting hook.
Adapted to be inserted through the respectivesetsjof slits and (5) area pai r of elliptical spring members (l3),'the free portions of which are adapted to engage about a. persons forearm to hold the'c arrier in place; The ends of the'spring'irieinbers are bent outwardly as at M) to facilitate re ii'ngf eif a i ren 1 r -"1 3M51 pr fig embr.issharh ain av ibb dfo corrugated, fiegriblgjt'ubular casing "(15) "to preventi slipping fandjdecrease "wear upon pt 1 rer h -bc y o v thelspiri'na'an slits form ng he "staining pot: 'e't therefore.
In 11 9 11s a" the. may "(l i the the casinglis removed:therefrom and the end trained through the slitsof'one" of the sets (4) 012(5); the small section (17) is then replaced, It will thus be see n that the small section'so'f the casings also serve as retainers for holding'the springs in place, and 0b viously the casings are removable and replaceable in their entirety when they become worn or cracked.
WVhile the operation of my'invention and its advantagesare believed to be apparent from the foregoing, it is'here pointed out "that the spring attaching devices greatly facilitate the 'mounting and disengagement of the carrier in that they are simply snapped into place. Furthermore, they are 'adaptable'for disposition upon any sized forearm within limits, and can be worn over any type or character of garment.
