To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUsT LARGILLIERE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Soda Springs, in the county of Caribou and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dirigible Sleighs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to self propelled sleighs, and has for its object to provide a sleigh which is drawn by a motor driven .propeller secured on 'the front end of the sleigh and which propeller is pivoted to the body of the sleigh by a manually controlled universal pivot, in order that the sleigh may be guided and directed in its travel. A further object is to provide a braking device by which the sleigh may be also directed and retarded in its travel.
These objects I accomplish with the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, and as described in the speciiication forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings in which I have shown the best and most substantial embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a 'side elevation of the apparatus. Figure 2 .is a front eleva tion of the apparatus, parts out away. Figure 3 is a longitudinal section on line S-3 of Figure 1, but not cutting the engines and propeller.
The invention consists of the new and novel combination, arrangement and con` struction of the several parts oi the apparatus, and as shown a pair of spaced apart runners A support the body and mechanism of the apparatus. A frame ll is secured on said runners and held above them by the spiral springs C which are held under slight compression by the bolts 18 and knee braces of the sleigh, and which bolts 18 hold said springs from undue expansion and the consequent injury to the braking elements of the apparatus. The body D, of the sleigh is shown as enclosed and with seats S for the operator, and with doors of ingress and egress. An internal combustion engine E, is mounted in front of, and secured to the upper portion of the body of the sleigh, and braced laterally by the braces 1. A base plate 2 is provided, to which the upper ends of said lateral braces 1 are secured, and through which the pivot rod 3 is journalled. The said pivot rod 3 entends downwardly to near the said frame B, and on its lower end is secured a segment gear at', whose teeth mesh with the teeth of a spur gear 5. The said spur gear 5 is secured on a shaft 6 having a universal joint therein. A hand or steering wheel 8 is secured on the said shaft- 6 by which the said shaft is rotated. The base plate 10 of the engine E is secured on the uppei end of said pivot rod 3 and as said pivot rod is partially rotated the engine E is turned,A together with the propeller P, which is secured on the front of said engine. A foot pedal 11 is fastened to one arm of a rocking shaft 12, and the other arm of said shaft 12 is pivoted to the brake shoe 13, by the link rod 111. The said brake shoe 13 is carried on a transverse pipe or rod 15, that in turn is secured on 'the underside of said body, and each side of the apparatus has a brake shoe. Side springs 16 are provided and which are each secured at one end thereof to the adjacent runner A and the rear end is slidable on said runner. Having described the invention I will now describe its operation. Having started the engine the apparatus is drawn forward, and its direction may b-e changed by partially turning the engine on the base plate 2. This may be done by partially rotating the pivot rod 3 by means of the gears 5 and 7. If the apparatus is moving over the snow by the pull of the propeller P, the direction may be controlled by the foot of the operator, by pushing down on one of the said foot pedals 11, which rotates the rocking shaft 12 connected therewith, whereby the lower end of the brake shoe is made to engage the ice, or snow over which the apparatus is sliding and the apparatus will be drawn in that direction. Similar braking elements are provided on both sides of the apparatus, that is, another foot pedal, rocking shaft, link rod and brake shoe are Isimilarly mounted on the other side and runner of the apparatus. I provide a spring 17 for each of the brake shoes, having one end fastened to the frame B and its other end to the upper portion of the shoe, to normally hold them out of engagement. When I desire to stop, or to slow down when gliding down an incline I apply both brakes, by pushing down of the foot pedals 11, as well as to stop the engine.
