Be it known that l, BnRNHAnn W, Wnsr- B0, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Prairie, Pierce County,
a Washington, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Lumber-Loading Devices, ef-which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to improvements to in lumber loading devices, and particularly to a device of that character especially adapted for the handling of lumber and for loading it 'intoand from ships; the principal object of the invention being to 1 provide such a device inthe form of. a
grapple, adapted to be attached to and lifted by a hoisting. cable and which has means provided for embracing and lifting large stacks of lumber.
Another object offlthe invention is to 'provide a device as above stated havingv manualy operable means for easily and quickly adjusting the lifting members so as to free the device from a stack of lumber or for $5 securing it to the stack.
A still further object resides in the provision of clam ing levers for retaining a load against slippagewhile being carried.

Formed centrally on the cross beam 3 are three spaced apart lugs 12 and .pivotally mounted between these on a bolt or pin 13 extended through them'are two clamping levers ll that extend toward opposite ends of the frame as shown in Figure l. The

When the device is lifted by upward pull -on the cable 17, the cross bars 18 on the lower ends of levers 14 are swung downwardly and clamped tightly against the lumber stack and thereby hold it in balanced 15 position and prevent slippage of the load.
- lVhen the load is lowered onto a support and the cable slackened, the holding pressure of the levers 1. is removed and the i arms 5 may be swung outwardly to free i the device so that it may be lifted from the stack.
In Figures 5 and 6, I have illustrated a modification of the device wherein the clamping levers 14 are pivotally fixed between lugs 25 extended from. the under side of the cross beam 3 and wherein the crank arms d of. the four posts 4 are connected by means of links 10 with the opposite ends of cross bars 27 fixed to the ends of a shaft W 28 supported parallel with and above the beam 3- in bearings 29-29, The cross bars 27 have extended ends 30 equipped with handles 31 whereby the shaft may be re 35 ing arm 5, as before described.
It is readily apparent that changes could be made in various details of construction without departing from the spirit oi the in vention and for this reason I do not wish. to be limited only to the details herein illustrated Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A. device of the class described. comprising a horizontal frame structure, a plurality of shafts fixed rotatably at their upper ends in said frame and extending downwardly at opposite sides thereof, load carrying arms Xedperpendicularly to the lower ends of the shafts, means at each side of the frame, operable to simultaneously rotate the shafts to swing their arms into .Or from load carrying osition, a pair of clamping levers pivotal y attached to the frame having ends adapted to engage a load being lifted and means for connecting their opposite end with a hoisting cable.

In device of the class described, a horizontal frame structure having parallel, opposite side beams and a transverse beam rigidly connecting them, at their centers, shafts rotatahly fixed at their upper ends in the ends of said side beams and extended downwardly therefrom, arms fined perpendicularly to the lower ends of the shafts, crank arms fixed to the upper ends of'the shafts, bell cranks fixed .pivotally to the frame at opposite sides and links connecting the bell cranks with the said crank arms whereby actuation of the bell cranks, at either side of the frame, causes rotation of t the shafts at that side to swing the arms into or from load carrying position, a pair of levers pivotally fixed centrally to the cross beam of the frame to extend in opposite directions parallel with the side beams, said levers having cross bars at their outer ends for engaging a load carried by the device and. having connecting at their opposite ends tor attachment to a hoisting cable.
4., A. device of the class described comprising a horizontal frame'structure, a pin rality of shafts fixed at their upper ends in said frame and. extending downwardly therefrom, load carrying arms fixed to the lower ends of the shafts and clamping levers pivotally mounted in the frame having ends adapted for connection with a hoisting means and their opposite ends adapted to be clamped against the top of theiloadin opposed relation to the said supporting arms when tension is applied to the oisting means;
